Abstract

Abstract

Facing death is never an easy task to accomplish, not even for modernity which claims to master and understand all things under the sun. Many philosophers and thinkers ponder upon “death” as both a mystery and a problem, grand in scope and unfathomable in depth. Nevertheless, only a few thinkers relate death with modernity. Zygmunt Bauman is one of the living legends in this respect. With him, one is challenged to be unsettled on the case of thinking about the phenomenon of death and its implications within the framework of modernity’s project, obsession, critique, and power struggle. Deconstructing mortality is arguably one of modernity’s persistent obsessions. By applying hermeneutical approach, Bauman envisions three ways of modernity’s reading on the issue of mortality as well as three strategies to deal with it, namely degeneration, hygiene and immigrant. However, these three readings and strategies, though convincing and relevant in interpreting modernity’s attitude toward death, are lacking in prediction and predilection of the future. Hans Jonas’ way of dealing with mortality issue is discussed at the end of this paper to complete the philosophical reflection on death by Bauman.

Abstract

All human being has fundamental rights and duties. There appears possible conflict of rights and interests in the dynamics of social interaction, and possible conflict between individuals and community. This article tries to put forward a thesis that community of rights could be harmonized to each other. There are at least two ways to achieve this goal. First, the formation of consciousness of the significance of political-holiness. Secondly, pastoral formation for the spirituality of reconciliation. Both are necessary in order to avoid people from being frustrated because of being trapped in a “dirty” politics and state. And besides, we need spirituality of reconciliation as a source of new spirit and energy for people devastated by bloody conflicts. We are in need of peace gained through justice (opus iustitiae pax).

Abstract

The discourse on technoculture reflects the relationship between humans and technology. Such a relationship is built upon an understanding that humans need technology to increase efficiency. In fact, technocultural discourse produces a way to see and understand the world from a different angle. Up to today, the technocultural life world remains largely unexplored.

Abstract

This article presents Foucault’s ambitious thoughts on various historical events in the past and sees how people faced and reacted to all these events in different eras of thinking, ways of life, cultures and historical settings. He works with past events, yet his objective is to constitute a history of the present. His rich analyses in his works are classified in three main axes, namely the axis of knowledge, of power, and of ethics or subject. The author of this article also presents Foucault’s notion on power as practiced throughout the history of systems of thought, and how this way of thinking can be read into in any political power, or how Foucault’s thinking can be seen as a criticism on various repressive powers practiced everywhere, including in Indonesia.

Abstract

Religion has been an institution that plays a leading role in matters of human religious and spiritual life. One might ask whether in the last centuries religion still did its job to encourage human beings to seek the religious truths and whether it still prevented them from the fall into negative tendencies. Did not religion tend to be one of the stimulants to radicalism, fundamentalism, and terrorism, even in the areas that were regarded as the origin of religiosity and religions? If so, what was left of religion? For Ken Wilber, there is only one major element in religion that can make religion play the leading role in the midst of confusion and change in this age, that is, contemplation. Contemplation leads human beings to face the Absolute. In this contemplation religion needs to be correlated with science by juxtaposing and exploring the knowledge from both fields and by analysing the five correlative attitudes. This effort is a kind of reframing process to create a map of existence which enables us to fulfil the three strands of valid knowing to verify the whole knowledge.

Abstract

The author discusses three directions in which Christianity can be rethought: exclusivist, inclusivist and pluralist. While the inclusivist view is better than the exclusivist view, both views do not rethink Christianity in a way that it becomes suitable for a new age, i.e. globalization, in which we all have to deal with people from different faiths. Christianity is seen as superior in both the exclusivist and the inclusivist view. Whereas in the pluralist view Christianity is seen as one among many religions, which make a genuine dialogue possible.
