Along with Kant’s sapere aude, the Enlightenment brought about a certain kind of rigidity as though everything could only be understood by way of logical reasoning through a set of inflexible procedures. When the Church was understood within this movement, it lost its dynamic and organic dimension. Romanticism, as the counter movement of the Enlightenment, brough new inspiration as to how one should do ecclesiology. Möhler took the chance. His ecclesiology is influenced by romanticism without being too abstract. His ecclesiology is exemplary of a creative ecclesiology that can manage various tensions due to different ways of understanding the nature of the Church.

An institution of Catholic higher education as an academic community is tasked with protecting and respecting the dignity of human life. It has an institutional autonomy to carry out its functions and guarantee its members a freedom based on the values of truth, justice, equality, and general welfare. Its vision leads to the formation of a community that is authentically human (humanum) and imbued with the spirit of Christ. Everyone involved in this higher education is inspired by the Christian principles and therefore is encouraged to live out their Christian calling in a mature and responsible manner. Catholic higher education as part of the Church must give a space for spiritual life assistance for young people who are studying in the institution. Furthermore, it should pay attention to all the problems and the needs of the students today, especially those concerning the human dignity. This article proposes a spirituality of humanum practised in a Catholic university as a framework for higher education in order to respect the dignity of women and men involved in the institution. In this framework, all individuals in the campus may increasingly experience acceptance and respect for their human dignity as noble image of God may live in accordance with the Christian values.

Discussing about rationality is often releated to human actions, because humans are considered as rationalist creatures who act to realize and decide things with their thinking abilities. The question is whether the society is becoming less critical in seeing the political games played by the power elite, or the authorities are using power to create fear by spreading some rationalizing concepts in such a way that they are accepted as truth. By tracing Amartya Sen’s thoughts, the author of this article tries to show the initial position (arche) of economics as a moral science, which seems to have been poisoned by desires for self-interest only. This article tries to reveal the fallacy of rationality behind the policies that have been used to implement power, which in this case have been promulgated by the government regarding economics in order to overcome various social and humanitarian problems such as poverty, hunger, and injustice in the society.

This article aims to criticize the improbability argument put forth by Dawkins, which serves as the central thesis in the new atheism. Dawkins uses this thesis to justify religion as the root of evil and violence, while also forms the basis for the denial of the existence of God. The improbability argument fundamentally has some issues ontologically, epistemologically, and ethically. Dawkins constructs the improbability argument by referring to his explanation in “The Ultimate Boeing 747” and the theory of natural selection, in which he considers creation from nothingness to be as improbable as the spontaneous formation of a Boeing 747 from a tornado’s debris. Dawkins also criticizes the NOMA perspective that positions Science and Theology as equals. Through the framework of critical realism, this article demonstrates the philosophical problems in Dawkins’ improbability argument, which reduces reality (ontology) based on subjective perception (epistemology), and thus obscuring the uniqueness of natural phenomenon and negating the existence of God. Alternative ethical perspectives regarding religion and God are presented to address Dawkins’ accusations to religion as a source of evil and violence.

The universal dimension of the Church does not always go hand in hand with the fact that it has to manifest itself in a local community, that is to say, a local Church presided by a bishop. History has witnessed that sometimes there were tensions between the two. The solutions offered are oftentimes one-sided. One may become either a staunch defender of universality or a radical proponent of the local Church. However, neither of these two positions are fruitful for the growth of the Church worldwide among the faithful: while holding one dimension, one can easily overlook the other. Ecclesiology might have to explore different approaches that can relate these positions, bearing in mind the needs of the local Church and the fatihful. What is needed in dealing with the tension is creativity. The tension may never be resolved without being creative in exploring new ways of constructing local theologies.

This article discusses the issue of recognition and protection of community rights in Indonesia in the light of Seyla Benhabib's interactive universalism. The research aims to analyse the challenges and opportunities in pursuing recognition and protection of indigenous peoples within the framework of interactive universalism, by emphasising cultural diversity and the importance of the local context. Interactive universalism concerns about the importance of dialogue, public participation, and the adaptation of democratic principles in preserving indigenous peoples' rights. Here interactive universalism is used to review the state of indigenous peoples' rights in Indonesia. Various public policies have caused conflicts, ranging from land take over to human rights violation, that are detrimental to the existence of indigenous peoples. Public policy as a representation of the state should protect their rights. In this article public policies are reviewed from the perspective of interactive universalism. The review process will consider cultural diversity in order to prevent future problems and to recommend adequate and assured protection of the rights of indigenous peoples. This research is a qualitative research using a philosophical approach and literature review to analyse actual problems.

Screen allows humans to experience and understand the world without being limited by the existence of their physical body. This is one of Anne Friedberg's main ideas in her works, which supports the main basis for this article. The Covid-19 pandemic that has occurred since March 2020 has limited, reduced, slowed down, and in some situations it could even be said it almost stopped human mobility, for example, in areas over the world where the ‘lockdown’ policy was applied. As a consequence, mobility turns into immobility. This condition corresponds to the reality during the pandemic dominated by the presence of screen. There has been growing importance of domestic space as the centre of everydayness that gives crucial role to the screen as its window to the world. This could be perceived as virtual mobility, in the sense that it was a ‘mobility’ without bodily mobility. This article elaborates Friedberg's thoughts with regard to virtual mobility that has been increasingly dominated by the screen, by examining its relevance to the actual conditions of the people during the pandemic. At the end of this article, the consequences of this massive virtual mobility and screen dominance during the pandemic are analysed—a situation that might bring further implications on the experiences of aura, panopticon, and consumption.

Paulo Freire's philosophical thinking and the spirituality of Francis of Assisi can inspire the world of education in Indonesia. The reality of educational process in schools in Indonesia still needs further reflection on whether it is truly liberating and transforming those who are involved in the process. In this article, philosophical thinking about a liberating education process is correlated with the Franciscan spirituality which serves as the driving force to realise a more humanising, liberating, and transformative education. The transformative dimension of education can be seen spiritually in the Christian tradition as the experience of repentance, that can happen in the teachers as well as in the students. The philosophical concept of education is used as a basis and rational framework for evaluating the educational process, and then the spiritual inspiration provides a spiritual framework to direct the development of educational process so that it continues to lead to the shared vision that is the goal of Christian educational institutions. This article consists of three parts exploring the philosophical-pedagogical views of Paulo Freire, the spirituality of Francis of Assisi, and the ideas arising from the correlation between the two.

Finding a common philosophical grounding for an Indonesian aesthetics seems to have been problematic. In another word, for a string of archipelagos consisting diverse customs and cultures partially constructed through colonial invasions dating from the 17th century, defining its existential beauty is never a simple argumentative task. The author attempts to elaborate Immanuel Kant’s ideas from his seminal work Critique of Judgment, although Kant’s central position in aesthetics studies does not imply that his disposition is free from ambiguity. The author employs analytical philosophy approaches to elaborate Kant’s ambiguous position and weakness. These are intended as preliminary step towards implementing Kant’s argument in building a fundamental Indonesian aesthetics theory with sufficient explanatory power to describe the variety of Indonesian traditional arts. Further step is to form a strong theoretical foundation for the development of artistic practices in the modern Indonesia. This article concludes that Kant’s implied position of the sublime could be a viable alternative in resolving this conundrum.
