Abstract

We have reams of ideas about the church. We like to talk aboutthem, amazed by their resourcefullness. But these are ideas. When itis the ideas that are touched upon, the actors on the stage are not theordinary people. They are intellectuals; indeed, theologians. It is achurch-talk. However, when it comes down to the faithful, thechurch becomes churches. The ideas become images. The talkbecomes imagining. For Christians in Java, togetherness in thecircles of friends and families has always been an everydayness. And in this togetherness, what is spoken about is not the idea, butfirst of all the 'image' of a familial community. These people have alot of time to share how they can live their lives at each moment. They are not very much 'systematic' in their way of sharingexperiences, and they do not want to complicate things, for theyalready think that things have always been complicated enough inlife. Their simple hopes and concerns are always oriented towardsthe harmony of their community life. They imagine, interpret andevaluate many things, so as to find the relatedness of realities intheir togetherness. In this sense, this paper wants to capture thosemarvelous moments driven by the believers' imagination on the epistemological level of the believers' experience.

Abstract

Christianity exists within the different religious traditions and Christians are aware of this reality as part of their existence. Especially in Asia, this situation has become a basic context to Christianity and the local churches that requires continuous reflections. In Asian reality, religious plurality is not merely a particular situation, but an important stage in the life of the Christianity, which leads to further reflections and even questioning of its existence among the other religions. The Catholic Church in Bogor (the Diocese of Bogor), Indonesia, is one of the example how the church in Asia is trying to survive and to find its roots within the local context. Thir article is inspired by the Diocese’s vision, the documents of Vatican II, and other documents of the Catholic Church, in exploring how the “spirit of encounter” can become a model for the local church to continue to exist within the religious plurality. This spirit invites the local believers to have a committment in giving their attention to the their context and to their social dimension. Through the encounters, the local church attempts to reduce the gaps of communication and to preserve good relationship with people of different religious traditions. Here the church enters the interfaith experience or the experience of togetherness, and the spirit of encounter might help spread the image of the church as a church of relation.

Abstract

Abstract

The article embarks on a critique of man’s advancement in human genetic engineering within the context of the creation process from the perspectives of the creation myths as contained in the literatures of Judeo-Christian and Islamic theologies. The author ventures into the perceptions of Hume and Plato on God and the Igbo (Nigeria) cosmogony. He argues that, through the exploits of the painstaking process of genetic engineering, man has commenced exploring the creation course of action, albeit at the rudimentary stages. The creation of man involved not the magic-wand oversimplification contained in the allegories of Genesis; rather, it took the arduous process of scientific experimentation, embryo culturing and other advanced processes that are beyond man’s contemporary level of technological and scientific know-how. This hypothesis is derived from a contemplative scrutiny of the allegories in the Biblical creation myth and the comparatively more explicit Qur’anic account vis-à-vis man’s exploits in human genetic engineering. The article concludes that man has commenced exploring the pathway to the God in him and will, somewhere along the line in the endlessness of eternity, create in his image and likeness.

Abstract

Batik Bogor Tradisiku might be seen as an innovation by the couple Siswaya-Rukoyah. This batik is a variant of the Javanese Batik as the creator habitus. Tradisiku may be considered a particular social ‘action’ especially due to its tendency to create and develop its own distinction. This paper is inspired by Pierre Bourdieu’s genetic structuralism to read and interpret the scheme of perception and the social action of the actors in producing the Batik Bogor. In the meantime, the approach of memetics introduced by the biologist Richard Dawkins is used to interpret the Batik Bogor as a meme, the smallest cultural information unit that spreads out through the social cognition process. The role of the agent will be considered as a vector, not an actor.

Abstract

Abstract

It is often claimed that violence goes hand in hand with monotheistic religions. While the facts of it is undeniable, this article seeks to argue that there is no inherent correlation between the two. On the contrary, monotheism has proved to bear the liberative and emancipatory power. It has also paved the way towards universal ethics. It is true, however, that the structure of monotheistic religion oftentimes leads to the need for selfdefinition, which in turn, may result in ostracizing the 'other'. One of the tasks of theology is precisely to constantly remind the people of tacit interests and exessive need for self-definition.

Abstract

Philosophy learning is an integral part of the educational formation at the Faculty of Theology, Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It is integrated with theology and other sciences learning to shape the identity of the faculty and to contribute to the development of the community. The focus of this writing is to answer two questions: What are the basic considerations for choosing philosophy learning in this faculty? How can method choice be accounted for? By attending to the faculty’s history, the author finds that the basic considerations for choosing philosophy learning method at the faculty are the history faculty establishment and its academic vision. Historically, the existence of the faculty was related to the efforts of Semarang Archdiocese for priest preparation and local pastoral activist education. Philosophy learning is also related to the faculty’s academic vision that leads the students towards concrete involvement in building the church living in the context of pluralism in Indonesia. Inspired by Heidegger’s idea on phenomenological method, preferences to select existential analysis method for philosophy learning in the faculty contribute to the development of contextual theological reflection as well as to priest and pastoral worker preparation, by involving students in community life, dialogue, and living together in the society, based on the values from the local wisdom that are still relevant today.

Abstract

A ‘nonplace’, in Marc Augé’s view, may be defined in contrast to what he refers to as ‘anthropological place’. It is a space which cannot be defined as relational, or historical or concerned with identity. This article explores the sense of (non)place by answering these questions: if it is true that ‘who’ we are is defined by ‘where’ we are, insinuating that places do have an important role in shaping our identities, then what do these nonplaces tell us about us? In places that lack any defining features and reflects little of the unique local geography in which they are in, can we still develop a sense of place? What is needed now is a shift from the initial prioritising of ‘cultural contexts’, to the ‘context of the embodied’, emplaced, individual subject, a context that precedes any cognitive framework. Bearing in mind this shift in focus to the body, a phenomenological analysis of nonplaces then becomes necessary. The experiential value of a place must be assessed according to a lived, embodied engagement with it. Rem Koolhas’ view of a kind of ‘generic city’ in which urban dwellers now live has worldwide reverberations. This paper argues that a phenomenological analysis that puts emphasis on the subjective, embodied lived experience is a necessary step to make. By focusing on the body, the strict categorisations that have led to the negative connotations to nonplaces begin to lose their rigidity. Keywords:*Nonplace, *space, *identity, *geography, *a sense of place, *experience, *environment, *context of the embodied, *habit-body, *flesh of the world, *generic city, *interaction, *surrounding
