Abstract

Abstract

This paper analyses why theology has to develop a concern with economy and economics and elaborates a perspective for a new debate between theologians and economists about socio-ethical problems in public life. The hermeneutically reflected relationship between church and economic life has been elaborated in a number of principles of community development. Church and economy are seen as two important ‘horizons of human life’. Economic developments, symptoms of crisis and symptoms of stagnation are mainly present in the Church’s social teaching owing to the fact that faith communities and their leaders are confronted with these social problems. This paper approaches the relationship between the two horizons in a perspective of public theology. An open conversation between theology and economics focuses on a new praxis-led theology. Whenever the meaning of ‘the good life’ is attached to the realisation of functions and capacities in the concrete markets within an actual economy, the actuality of the economic reality is placed within a horizon that expresses a sense of that life. It then becomes possible to state that a concrete set of functions and capacities are in service to humanity. Keywords:*community development, *'telos', *public theology, *spirituality, *institution *globalisation *contextualisation, *normative economics, *human dignity, *economics for the common good, *'bonum commune' *good life

Abstract

Human existence is perceived by Martin Heidegger as Dasein, that being-in-the-world. The modes of existence of Dasein in the world are Being-with-the-other (Mitsein), Being-alongside-things (Sein-bei), and Being-one’s-self (Selbstein). For Heidegger, the ideal mode of existence of Dasein is Being-one’s-self (Selbstein). Only through this mode of being that Dasein forms its distinctiveness from other entities which are just being-within-the-world. As to the convenience of enjoying the objects of the world, idle talk or gossipping can cause Dasein to forget its authentic being. After describing the thoughts of Heidegger on the fall of Dasein into being unauthentic, this paper highlights the ontological awareness of the existence of Dasein towards death as an authentic mode of existence. At the end of this writing, I propose narration as a ‘tool’ to be used by health care providers in assisting the patient to affirm and accept illness experience as their modes of being.

Abstract

A New Look at Instersubjectivity and Theology: A Retrieval of Filipino Loob-Kapwa Relationality In Dialogue with Gabriel Marcel and Ludwig Binswanger Rebustillo, Rowan

Abstract

Although Marcel and Binswanger are contemporaries both in terms of historical period and intellectual pursuit, it is curious that they are never discussed together. Hence, this essay will attempt to explore some areas of convergences and divergences between these two intersubjective thinkers who are considered to be indispensable interlocutors in the I-thou discourse. In this article, as another attempt to take the discourse on intersubjectivity a little bit further, Marcel and Binswanger are placed in dialogue with the Filipino concept of loob-kapwa, which the author believes provides a hospitable home, when seen against the background of Nicolescu’s “Included Middle”, for the intersubjective relation that they are proposing. The author asserts that loob-kapwa tandem, without turning a blind eye towards its negative tendencies, is a viable answer to the “problem of crossing-over” that remained to be a philosophical baggage for both Marcel and Binswanger courtesy of their Modern upbringing, because the chasm, at least conceptually, is absent in the Filipino estimation of the loob-kapwa intersubjective bond.

Abstract

Abstract

This article shows that what Foucault understands as genealogy is in many ways still in line with Nietzsche, that in terms of the basic concept of genealogy, using history, reveals the Herkunft – the origin of values that will dismantle the assumption of finality. Morality is born in the midst of a chaotic situation that forces individuals to make decisions and in the experience of a fragmented and unstable body. While through Entstethung one can see how the dominations that play behind any value are considered noble, the noble value is not in the hands of an independent subject. But there are also differences, since Foucault calls for the death of the subject, while Nietzsche is not up to that extreme. Another point of difference is that Foucault’s genealogy is practiced in a strict study discipline, wrestling with historical documents and writing down the detailed facts, while Nietzsche does not. The author argues that through Foucault’s thought, one might find a new meaning of the subject, that the subject is not an autonomous entity, but merely a production of power. The appearance of the subject is considered as a result of domination-relationships. In other words, these are the result of a disciplining effort.

Abstract

Priesthood is one of the known forms of apostolic ministry in the Church since decades of centuries ago. Its presence now, especially after the Second Vatican Council, when the number of priests around the world declines, has been talked about quite lengthy especially in the European countries and the United States undergoing secularisation. In the countries discussions were conducted and some solutions were offered, among others, that the Church needs to ordain women and to allow the priests to marry. But the (Catholic) Church remains with its traditional establishment: the priest needs to be celibate. What has been the reason? This is the point of exploration of this article. Talking about this subject is quite rare in the public sphere, moreover in important and urgent occasions. The point is quite simple: adding to the understanding and appreciation of the sublime dignity of celibacy for the service in the ecclesial life, especially in the present day. What will be seen: the roads to holiness in the Church and the wider realm of reference to apprehend this form of service. What will be discussed: who is apriest, by looking at itsstanding in the past and in the present day, and the essential call to the ministry as a Eucharistic minister, which will be described by highlighting the lifestyle uncovered in the spiritual framework the priest must build, i.e., prayer and celibacy/chastity.
