Abstract

Background: Emergency situations require nurses to be well prepared to provide rapid and effective life-saving interventions. Purpose: To analyze factors influencing nurses’ readiness in managing emergency cases at Hospital Regional Eduardo Ximenes (HoREX), Baucau, Timor Leste. Method: A quantitative descriptive-analytic study with a cross-sectional design was conducted involving 84 nurses selected through total sampling. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using univariate, bivariate (Spearman rank), and multivariate (multiple linear regression) analyses. Result: The results showed that knowledge, attitude, training, experience, and availability of Basic Life Support (BLS) equipment were significantly associated with nurses' readiness (p < 0.05). Multivariate analysis revealed that knowledge was the most dominant factor influencing nurses' readiness, followed by attitude, availability of BLS equipment, training, and experience. These variables collectively explained 85.1% of the variance in nurses' readiness. Conclusion: The study concludes that improving nurses' knowledge through continuous education and regular emergency training is essential to enhance readiness in handling emergency cases. Strengthening institutional support for training programs and ensuring adequate emergency equipment are strongly recommended to improve the quality of emergency nursing care.

Abstract

Background: Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) significantly impact global reproductive health. Sodomy, defined as anal intercourse often involving coercion, poses a high risk for STI transmission. Purpose: To analyze the effectiveness of Gram staining and 10% KOH examinations in detecting pathogens from anal swabs of sexual assault victims. Method: This analytical observational study used a retrospective cross-sectional design. Medical record data from 33 sodomy victims at Dr. Pirngadi Regional Hospital, Medan (2022–2024), were analyzed using total sampling. The reporting of this section adheres to the STROBE. Results: Most victims were male (57.58%), with the 11–20 year age group being most prevalent (69.70%). Gram staining identified Gram-negative diplococci in 17 individuals (51.52%), while 10% KOH detected yeast in 4 individuals (12.12%). McNemar’s analysis yielded a p-value 0.0016 indicates that Gram staining is more effective for STI detection in this context than 10% KOH. Conclusion: Gram staining is a more reliable diagnostic method for detecting STIs in anal swab samples compared to 10% KOH. The high prevalence of bacterial infections highlights the urgent need for early STI screening in sexual assault cases.

Abstract

Background: Hypertension management in rural Java currently focuses more on physical treatment and traditional herbal remedies, whereas a holistic care approach that integrates physical, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual aspects is needed to be more effective, relevant, and sustainable. The lack of understanding of holistic care among cadres and older women has led to limited community involvement, so it is necessary to describe their perceptions to develop practical hypertension management appropriate to rural communities' needs. Purpose: To describe the perception of holistic care in hypertension management among female community health workers (locally known as cadres)  and older women in rural Java. Method: The research was conducted during integrated health development post activities and through home visits from July 2025 to February 2026 in a village in Semarang Regency, Central Java. The instruments used were Focus Group Discussion guidelines, semi-structured interview lists, and observation sheets. There were 22 Respondents, including 11 cadres and 11 older women, who met the inclusion criteria: being older adults cadres or older women with hypertension aged >60 years, being Javanese, and having a history of hypertension for >1 year. The exclusion criteria were elderly individuals with disabilities, bedridden individuals, and individuals unable to communicate. Data validity was ensured through triangulation of sources with community health Center nurses, midwives, and village heads. Results: The study revealed four themes: knowledge of the older women and cadres, health practices, dissemination of health information, and the roles of village midwives, elderly cadres, and families. Conclusion: This study found a limited understanding of holistic care among cadres and rural older women who still focus on the physical complaints of hypertension. Comprehensive education through midwives, cadres, families, and nurses is needed for optimal holistic management.

Abstract

Background: Suicidal behavior and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among adolescents are increasing globally, and the WHO ranks suicide as the third leading cause of death among adolescents. In Indonesia, the 2022 I-NAMH Survey shows that 14.4% of adolescents have suicidal thoughts and 4.7% have attempted suicide. This situation highlights the importance of interventions that can improve emotional regulation and reduce self-harming behavior. Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A) has shown potential, but its effectiveness among adolescents remains inconsistent. Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of DBT-A in reducing suicidal behaviors and NSSI and improving emotional regulation in adolescents. Method: A literature search was conducted via PubMed and ScienceDirect for publications from 2011 to 2025. Inclusion criteria included quantitative studies with DBT interventions in adolescents aged 12–19 years, with outcomes of suicidal ideation, self-harm, or emotional regulation. Of the 585 articles identified, 10 studies met the criteria and were assessed for quality using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) instrument. Results: DBT-A consistently reduces self-harm behavior, NSSI, and suicidal ideation. Most studies report significant improvements in emotional regulation, with the highest effectiveness seen in multi-component programs involving families. Studies with shorter durations or limited components show less stable results. Conclusion: DBT is effective in reducing self-harm and suicidal ideation and improving emotional regulation. Structured implementation of DBT involving families, including cultural adaptation and the use of digital platforms, has the potential to expand access to services. Further research is needed to test the long-term effectiveness and application of DBT in more diverse adolescent populations.
