Abstract

This activity aims to increase community reading interest through mentoring the management of the Batubasa Nagari Library. The main focus of this program is to provide solutions to the low utilization of library facilities by the local community. The method used is a qualitative case study approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews, direct observation, and document analysis. The mentoring process involved intensive training for librarians on collection management, comprehensive collection audits, strategic planning for collection development, as well as collaboration with external parties and the implementation of information technology. The results of the activity showed that the mentoring successfully enhanced the skills of the library managers, improved collection management, and expanded community access to relevant reading materials. Additionally, the activity fostered close collaboration between library managers and the community, resulting in increased library visit frequency. In conclusion, mentoring the management of the Nagari library proved effective in enhancing reading interest through more professional management, the use of technology, and collaboration with various stakeholders. This strategy can be applied to other village libraries to support the improvement of community literacy

Abstract

The preservation of local culture is a crucial aspect in safeguarding national identity amidst the currents of globalization. One form of Javanese culture that holds high historical and philosophical value is macapat, a traditional form of singing that conveys moral, ethical, and spiritual teachings. This community service project aims to develop the skills of the younger generation and foster their love for Javanese art and culture through macapat singing training, while also establishing a well-structured and sustainable organization for the Ngesti Laras Art Group in Tulungagung. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and documentation. The results show that the macapat training not only enhanced the musical skills of the participants but also raised their awareness of the importance of preserving cultural heritage. Participants experienced significant improvement in understanding and performing macapat songs, supported by the training module provided. Additionally, the formation of an organizational structure consisting of a chairperson, secretary, treasurer, and work divisions provided clear direction and defined roles in managing the group's activities. The recommendation from this initiative is for similar training programs to be conducted continuously, involving more youth and support from educational institutions or local governments, so that local cultural preservation can be carried out more systematically and sustainably. This training serves as a means of regenerating traditional art practitioners and strengthening the cultural identity of the local community. In conclusion, macapat training is an effective strategy for preserving Javanese culture, particularly within local art communities.

Abstract

Community engagement serves as a vital bridge between the academic sphere and social reality. The community is the ideal partner in applying, developing, testing, and evaluating theoretical-conceptual ideas. However, community engagement within State Islamic Higher Education Institutions (Perguruan Tinggi Keagamaan Islam Negeri, PTKIN) appears to be limited to a service-oriented paradigm, predominantly focused on religious services. This study examines these patterns through a qualitative-descriptive approach involving documentary analysis from Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Sunan Kalijaga, UIN Alauddin Makassar, UIN Batusangkar, and the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs. Employing textual interpretation, comparative analysis, and critical reflection, the research identifies an outdated paradigm in PTKIN's community engagement, one that fails to adapt to shifting societal realities. The evolving nature of society necessitates a corresponding shift in the conceptual and practical framework of community engagement. A paradigmatic transformation is essential if community engagement at PTKIN is to remain relevant and contributive both to the university and the broader society.

Abstract

This community engagement initiative aims to enhance the Qur’anic literacy of santri (Islamic boarding school students) through an integrated training program encompassing tahsin (proper recitation), taḥfīẓ (memorization), and translation of the Qur’an. The program was implemented by the Department of Qur’anic and Tafsir Studies, Faculty of Ushuluddin, Adab, and Da’wah, at the Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar, in collaboration with the Pondok Pesantren Tarbiyah Islamiyah (PPTI) Nurul Yaqin Batipuah Ateh in June 2024. The method employed was a participatory approach based on collaboration between the implementation team and all components of the pesantren, involving initial observation, training sessions, halaqah (study circles), mentoring, and periodic evaluations. The results indicate a significant improvement in the students' ability to recite the Qur’an properly (tahsin), their memorization achievements through the ziyādah and murāja‘ah methods (taḥfīẓ), as well as their comprehension of verse meanings using the Tafsir Jalalain approach (translation). Moreover, the program positively influenced the students’ attitudes and character, particularly in terms of discipline, motivation to learn, and religious commitment. The pesantren demonstrated a strong commitment to sustaining the program by developing internal systems such as an integrated curriculum, training for supporting teachers, and routine evaluations. In conclusion, this initiative not only successfully addressed the partner pesantren’s needs in strengthening Qur’anic literacy, but also presented a holistic and contextual Qur’anic education model that holds the potential for replication in other Islamic boarding schools. This program represents a tangible contribution to the sustainable development of Qur’anic education within the pesantren system.

Abstract

The Pejuang Subuh (Dawn Warriors) Program is a community service initiative aimed at strengthening Qur’anic literacy among children and adolescents through regular post-dawn prayer activities at Baitul Makmur Minangkabau Mosque, West Sumatra. This program was developed in response to the declining interest of the younger generation in the Qur’an and their diminishing engagement in mosque activities. The implementation employed a community-based, participatory-educational approach, comprising preparation, daily activities, and periodic evaluation. Participants included children aged 7–15 years, guided by mosque youth serving as facilitators. Core activities encompassed tilāwah (Qur’anic recitation), taḥsīn (recitation improvement), the transmission of Qur’anic moral values, and reflective discussions. The program yielded significant improvements in Qur’anic reading skills, worship discipline, and the development of participants' Islamic character. Moreover, it fostered an inclusive and vibrant mosque atmosphere and enhanced intergenerational participation within the local community. Challenges such as inconsistent attendance, limited facilitators, and varied participant abilities were addressed through adaptive and collaborative strategies. This program has proven to be a best practice model that can be replicated in other mosques with appropriate contextual adjustments. In conclusion, Pejuang Subuh is an effective model for nurturing Qur’anic literacy and religious character through simple yet sustainable community-based activities.
