Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has significantly shifted people’s behavior in various aspects of life. As a contemporary discourse, pandemic needs to be understood with a more comprehensive approach. This article contains two common perspectives on pandemics: naturalistic perspective, which views pandemics either as individual microscopic entities or as a life process; and socio-constructivist, which views pandemics as non-natural disasters and public discourse consensus. The second view is getting more public attention because of its closeness to sociological experiences amid information uncertainty, which formed from the prevalence of disinformation, fake news, knowledge vulnerabilities, and society’s digital-virtual freedom. However, there is also undeniable confusion about information or particular political interests from government authorities or the scientific community. The post-truth dimension also influences the socio-epistemic constellation of society in understanding the pandemic. This article aims to open a scientific-philosophical discussion and produce an epistemological framework for understanding the pandemic based on a more rigorous epistemological review and then can be a post-pandemic policy consideration.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the social action of the Muhammadiyah movement in Wakatobi, Southeast Sulawesi. It is qualitative research, with the data obtained through in-depth interviews with key informants, field observations, and related documents, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman paradigm. The results conclude that the social action of the Muhammadiyah movement in Wakatobi was in the form of educational services for a marginalized community in Bajo Mola and Kaledupa is still only a moral appeal. An appeal to the community to jointly educate and empower the community. From the analysis conducted, especially on the steps of a movement, the social action of the Muhammadiyah movement has not fully implemented the concept of Al-ma’un theology. Social service in education only touches the charitable dimension, while the empowerment aspect has not received attention. This reality is closely related to the resource capacity of Muhammadiyah Wakatobi. To fulfill the ideal concept of Al-Ma’un’s theology, Muhammadiyah in Wakatobi should build intensive collaboration and communication with various institutions and involve the local community.

Abstract

This study aims to see and analyze the cosmological relation between time and spiritual life in the Javanese-Islamic tradition. Philosophically, the system of pranotomongso(cycle of time) believes to have a solid connection to the knowledge of time and the spiritual dimension of life surrounding it. Based on a study of Javanese literature (primbon)and Islamic views on the cosmology of time, this study shows that in Javanese culture and literature, time is not only seen as a natural cycle but also positioned like living beings. Therefore, the Javanese believe in humans' importance in maintaining good relations with time. The relationship model must be symbiotic-mutualism. At the same time, the Islamic tradition sees that Allah SWT created the universe and the regularity of time for the good of humankind. So, it is clear that both Islamic and Javanese traditions place time as a symbol that indicates the unity of man and his creator. Although time strongly influences human knowledge regarding a time where humans depend entirely on natural cycles, the value of knowledge about time itself is cross-generational.

Abstract

Over the decades, there has been a growing understanding that emphasizes the separation between facts and values. Science is considered not to have the authority to answer questions related to morality. This article tries to offer a different argument emphasizing that science must have a role in answering various essential and urgent problems faced by many countries, namely, religious fundamentalism. This article offers a new synthesis of these relations based on the dialectical concept of two theories related to science and religion. Based on fiqh and the concept of maslahah, which have been the foundation for applying Islamic law, this article shows the positive relationship and the need for reconciliation between science and religion (Islam). Science turns out to offer an alternative solution, especially when there is the impossibility of separating religion and state. Reconciliation of science and religion (Islam) can contribute to the democratization process of Muslim countries without destroying Islamic religious values. The principle used is the concept of maslahah, whose focus orientation is for the common good.

Abstract

For centuries, polemic over Ibnu Taimiyyah (661-728H) has generated cross-generational tension among supporters and opponents. Those supporters believed Ibn Taimiyyah to be ma'shum, surpassed Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal, and unilaterally ordained him as khatim al-mujtahidin. A claim which ignores Sunnis scholars’ epistemic criticism across the school of thought and generations, including a critical assessment of the internal Hanbali school of thought itself. Such as Ibn Rajab (736-795H); Ibn al-Mardawi (817-885H); Ibn Najjar (898-972H); al-Buhuti (1000-1051H); and al-Safaraini (1114-1188H). By employing the interdisciplinary approach to analyzing the primary sources, the result of the study revealed that one of the internal consensuses of the Hanbali school of thought is clear enough. When there is a dispute over the results of tarjihformulation in ushuland furu', the hierarchy of the referential authority is as the following; first,Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal; second, Ibnu Qudamah al-Maqdisi al-Hanbali; third,Al-Majd al-Din Abi al-Barakat al-Taimi; fourth,Ibn Muflih al-Hanbali; fifth,Ibnu Rajab al-Hanbali; sixth,Ibnu Hamdan al-Hanbali; seventh,Taqiyy al-Din Ibn Taimiyyah; and eighth,Ibn ‘Abdus al-Hanbali. Considering its various controversies, the leading scholars of the Hanbali school of thought positioned Ibn Taimiyyah in the seventh rank in the hierarchy of the school of thought's authority and emphasized that Ibn Taimiyyah was not the only one bearing the title of sheikh al-Islamwithin the Hanbali school of thought.

Abstract

This study explains the phenomenon of the living qur'an practiced by the Tebuwung Society in Dukun, Gresik, East Java, regarding the meaning of surah Yusuf and Maryam in the tingkepantradition. The Qur'anic phenomenon in this pregnancy ritual is a form of meaning of the Qur'an's content that surrounds the local community's life. Based on qualitative research with a phenomenological approach, while data were obtained through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, this study tries to explain the phenomenon of the tingkepantradition, the public's reception of surahYusuf and Maryam, and the influence of reading the two surahsin the tingkepantradition. Based on Karl Mannheim's perspective and the social construction of Peter L. Berger, the study's results show that the awareness of the Qur'an that exists in the community is built through the religious understanding of the central figures of religion at local level. From these central figures, awareness emerged from understanding the ideas and moral messages of surahYusuf and Maryam in the hope of having descendants that handsome or beautiful face and character as depicted in the two surahs. Apart from being local wisdom, this tingkepan tradition constructively demonstrates the community's belief that the creation of man is closely related to the Oneness of God since he/she was in the womb.

Abstract

Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous nation, with about 265 million people, and has the most significant number of adherents to Islam. The country also was well known as one of the new tigers of Southeast Asia in the mid-80s with high economic development. The impressive economic growth at an average level of 5 percent, a low rate of inflation at 2.36, the rose of consumption growth to 5.1 percent, the rapid decline of poor people, and the low Gini ratio index at 0.382 show how vital Indonesia as an exemplar of the growth of capitalism in the global south. The fact that the most populous Muslims are spread widely in Southeast Asia and Indonesia would be the best example of how capitalism and religion play their role along with their cultural and social characteristics. Therefore, the main aim of the following study is to analyze contemporary Indonesia through the lenses of classical sociology theory, especially to reveal the fundamental question of how capitalist, religious, and work-oriented Indonesian society is? Within Indonesia's contemporary context and the tension between capitalism and religion, this study shows the relationships and dynamics between the two and forms another kind of capitalism.

Abstract

This study discusses the activism of pesantren-based female politicians in utilizing the pesantren network in electoral districts where most of constituents affiliate with nationalist-style parties. One of which is the Soloraya area. A portrait of post-reform electoral districts with solid political affiliations to nationalist parties. In this context, this study intends to examine the political activism of women politicians based on Islamic boarding schools in electoral politics. The data collected in this study carries out by observation and in-depth interviews. This study argues that the solidity of the santri and pesantren constituent bases, the expansion of the non-student voter base, the support of the pesantren elite, and the performance of female political candidates based on pesantren are the keys to the success of transforming social capital into political capital to win electoral politics in electoral districts that are not pesantren based. The novelty of the findings of this study is that female politicians can win electoral politics in the 2019 elections by mobilizing political disillusionment, militancy, and solidity in support of the pesantren network, especially among women and the social capital attached to individual politicians. This study enriches the study of electoral politics and its relationship to the activism of women politicians based on pesantren.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the rights of forced migrants in Islam. Much Islamic literature, especially the Qur'an and the life history of the Prophets—starting from Prophet Abraham, Moses to Muhammad SAW- discusses the term migration and the importance of fulfilling various rights over them. However, this tradition is often ignored in the reality of modern world life, even though Muslim countries have accommodated about 50 percent of the world's refugee population. Based on qualitative descriptive approach by referring to written sources, especially the Qur'an, Sunnah, and the traditions of the early Muslim generation that talk about musta'min, the results of the study show that the Islamic tradition has provided a robust framework and the importance of paying attention to protection guarantees. For forced migrants, especially concerning fundamental rights, such as the right to dignity, non-refoulment, equal treatment, housing, health care, family reunification, and property. As a result, it is very essential for Muslims to re-open and maintain theological discourse on the issue of the protection of forced migrants. A move that can make an essential contribution to assisting Muslim countries in managing the crisis of forced migrants, in line with Islamic principles.

Abstract

Studies on the history of Qur'anic interpretation (tafsir) in Indonesia, such as those conducted by Riddel, A.H. John, and Howard M. Federspiel, generally do not relate to the tradition and culture of pesantren. In fact, as the oldest Islamic educational institution in Indonesia, pesantren has a dynamic and complex history and tradition of Qur'anic interpretation literacy. This article examines one side of the tradition of Qur'anic interpretation in pesantren through Tafsir Surah Yasinby Kyai Bisri Mustafa. This book of tafsir was selected; in addition to representing the tradition of interpretation in pesantren, science is used to explain the messages of the Qur'an in it. In this book, the explanation of science is not used as a justification for the scientificity of the Qur'an, nor is it used as a way to Islamise science, but as an affirmation of the spiritual aspects and implicit messages of the Qur'anic text. Axiologically, Kyai Bisri uses the scientific approach, not for science but to explain the sunnatullah (natural law) and divine existence. Through Tafsir Surah Yasin, he rejects Western science that tends to be materialistic-nihilistic and, at the same time, affirms the transcendence of science in Islam.
