Abstract

This study aims to look at the diversity condition of Indonesian society related to the discourse of pluralism. Based on the fieldwork conducted from several regions in Indonesia; Samarinda, Manado, and Jakarta which is considered as representative regions in term of its dynamic diversity, by using a socio-political approach, the results of this study show that the condition of diversity in Indonesian society constitutes an asymmetrical discourse of pluralism; a plurality based on social conditions and phenomena that differ from one region to another, one community to another, and one case to another. The concept of pluralism does not merely a notion that emerge because of religious diversity and does not always shape people's behavior in facing diversity. On the contrary, the diversity of Indonesian society will enrich the concept of pluralism to be an ethnic, religious, and political pluralism.

Abstract

This study tries to see the existence of women in Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia in Gorontalo after the issuance of Perppu No. 2 of 2017. Based on qualitative research, wherein data is obtained through interviews and focus group discussions, the results of the study found that members of the HTI Muslimah group, as individuals undergo a process of depersonalization. This process gained legitimacy from religious understanding, especially related to belief in the concept of fatalistic destiny, which has contributed to the perpetuation of patriarchal interpretation. Their determination to hold the Taqiyuddin an-Nabhani book as a single source of teachings has contributed effectively in strengthening the process of depersonalization. The banning of HTI did not weaken the group's identity and depersonalize its members. The ban only shifts their da'wah space; from the public to limited space, from large group targets to the individual using a door to door, utilizing networks of friendship and brotherhood, and placing the role of women more significantly. However, there has also been a change in the level of their depersonalization and compliance due to the access to new technologies and knowledge that encouraged them to have critical thinking, modalities, and power to internalize more relevant knowledge and identity.

Abstract

This study aims to explain analytically the receptions of the Qur'an in the animated movie, episode Nussa: Girls Talk. A part of the Qur'anic verse from Surat Al-Ahzab: 33 presented in this episode shows that there are makeup rules for women that tend to be understood textually. Based on the categorization of interaction between religious followers and the holy book by Sam D. Gill and Teun A Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis as an analytical tool, the study found that the reception in the episode of Nussa: Girls Talk is both exegetical and informative. The interpretation (tafsir) presented in this episode is textual. The form of textual interpretation was chosen by the producers because of its concise and considered more relevant for children as the main targets/audiences. Besides, the socio-religious background of theproducers of Nussa: Girls Talk is known to have a close relationship with the hijrah movement; an Islamic movement that tends to be fundamentalist. As a results, textual understanding develops and tends to dominate in this animated movie.

Abstract

Studies on Ahmadiyah have been very extensive both in their focuses and approaches. However, few scholars consider local culture as an important means of the Ahmadiyya movement. This study focuses on the use of local culture in the form of uga in the Sundanese Ahmadiyya tradition. Uga is an oral tradition of  ancestor mystical prophecy in Sunda on the coming  of an important change in a situation of crisis. This is an ethnographic study of the Sundanese uga among Ahmadiyya followers in Kuningan, Tasikmalaya, and Bandung. The uga of Ahmadiyya is then analyzed using an interpretive approach. This study shows that there are at least six ugas of Ahmadiyya in Bandung, Garut, Singaparna, Tasikmalaya, Ciamis, and Manislor Kuningan. These ugas represent a symbolic meeting point between the expectations of Sundanese on the change of a situation with the messianic beliefs in Ahmadiyya. Ugas can shape the experience, identity and strengthen the roots of mystical ideology of Ahmadiyya in Sundanese people. Hereby, the case of ugaSundanese Ahmadiyya is a strategy of acculturation of local culture which added other categorization  in the context of Ahmadiyya movement in various countries around the world.

Abstract

Christian students' involvement in the school Islamic programs such as wearing Muslim clothing, participating in the seven-minute Islamic sermon, and joining Islamic classes are often considered a compliance attitude. Instead, it is a process of self-adaptation because they attend a school within a Muslim majority environment.  Moreover, this camouflage represents their resistance to the school rules. This article discusses how Christian students in two state schools in Padang behave in the framework of Islamic customs. Based on the theories of Jean Baudrillard's simulacra and James C. Scott's resistance, the results of this study show that Christian students in two state schools in Padang tend to be obedient and interested in Islamic practices. For instance, they imitate the way Muslim students dress so that they look similar to Muslim students. This attitude pleases their Muslim teachers and fellow students. In addition, Minang people in their neighborhood also amaze and always refer to these Christian students€™ attitude as a model to be followed.

Abstract

Studies on the development of teaching materials have been dominated by a pedagogical orientation to develop learning objectives, strategies, and evaluation. Not many studies have been carried out on the scientific structure of teaching materials. This study tries to examine the relationship between Islamic education teaching materials in the sub-chapter of Al-Qur'an based on the authoritative Qur'anic exegesis. Studying Islamic education teaching materials from the reference sources aims to ensure the quality of the teaching materials. By focusing the study on analyzing the materials about the stories and models of the prophet Adam and Ayub, through the critical discourse analysis method on how the sources are used, and how the context of the material is presented, the results of this study reveal that the materials teaching of Islamic education, about the story of prophet Adam and Ayub, do not refer to the books of Qur'anic exegesis. The explanation model is textual. Partial values are provided, such as the repentance of the prophet Adam and the patience of Ayub. Therefore, this study recommended that the development of Islamic education teaching materials in the chapter of the prophet stories refer to the authoritative Qur'anic interpretation books so that the materials are richer, better in quality, and actual.

Abstract

Ibn Khaldun was popularly known as a Muslim intellectual since the West discovered his work, Muqaddimah. Through this work, he became the only Muslim scientist whose methods and knowledge basis were accepted by the West. Ibn Khaldun became popular with several names, such as Sociologist, Economist, and the founder of social science. However, only few attempts use Ibn Khaldun's perspective as an analytical tool in the discipline of sociology. In Indonesia, the study of the sociology of religion often refers to the big names of sociologists born from the West socio-historical context. Ibn Khladun theory of Al-Umran and Ashabiyah has offered a big concept about civilization, culture, and communal ties that are generated through his research on Muslim society as its focused object. This results of this study reveal that the Ashabiyah theory can be used as an alternative perspective in the study of the sociology of religion, especially to analyze the socio-religious phenomena of the multicultural Muslim society in Indonesia. With the reason that the similarity of the socio-historical context of the object of analysis is very important in determining a perspective to be used. Although, it does not mean that perspectives with different contexts should be abandoned. On the contrary, those perspectives can be used as a complementary perspective, to enrich the scientific treasure in the Sociology of Islam.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the role of kyai in creating the religious culture of the santri. How the socialization patterns that exist in an educational institution especially pesantren (Islamic boarding school) can shape the religious culture of the santri, is the main concern of this study. Madrasah Qudsiyyah, one of the Islamic education institutions based on pesantren in Kudus Regency, Central Java, is the object of this study. With a qualitative approach, the data were collected through participant observation and in-depth interviews. They were then analyzed using the theoretical framework of the sociology of knowledge of Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckman. The results of this study revealed that kyai (including ustadz) has a central role in shaping the character and religious culture of the santri. Kyai, apart from being an educator, also acts as a guide, uswah hasanah, and guide of the santri. With this role, kyai becomes a kind of role model for santri in terms of the spiritual, moral, intellectual, and social life. From a long time daily interaction process between kyai and santri in the pesantren, finally it becomes habitus in shaping the mindset, character, and religious culture of the santri.

Abstract

This study is the first attempt to introduce the concept of Nusantaranology in Indonesia. Based on a bibliographic survey and the authors' experiences in research development, it appears that Indonesia has a very strong scientific foundation compared to other countries. Besides, the fact that the wealth of local treasures in Nusantara can be utilized as a first step to develop the scientific concept of Nusantaranology. In this study, the authors conducted a bibliographic survey on how the influence of Western social sciences and humanities on several studies or research in Indonesia. The authors argue that the influence of the Western scientific tradition needs to be re-examined in understanding the various local knowledge found in Nusantara. The authors also found that various research results from local researchers have shown that the products of knowledge in Nusantara are very profound if they are framed under a scientific umbrella, i.e Nusantaranology. Finally, this study is expected to be the first step for researchers in Indonesia to carry out various studies on local issues, while continuing to strengthen the philosophical foundations of science, to reinforce the concept of Nusantaranology or Indonesian Studies.
