Abstract

In the context of pastoral care, the Church of the Archdiocese of Semarang has created a policy of establishing small base groups among the community. Each parish in the Semarang Archdiocese is subdivided into sub-groups, which are then referred to as kring or lingkungan. The existence of ‘lingkungan’ certainly cannot be separated from the pastoral initiative of the missionaries at the beginning of the mission Church in Java Island. The missionaries, who were very limited in terms of numbers and services, were greatly helped by the presence of Catholic teachers who were present in remote villages and involved in preaching the Gospel for the community. In this study, the authors attempt to see the relevance of the life of the local Church community and the ideal of the Early Church as depicted in Acts 2:41-47. The situation of the early community lived in a basic group that was diligent in prayer and togetherness, was seen as an ideal model to be achieved through Church life in an based group of ‘lingkungan’.

Abstract

This study aims to display the development of the meaning of parrhesia Παρρησία which heavily influenced evangelization. Parrhesia is one of the most essential concepts in ancient Greek which added richness to the LXX and the New Testament. Parrhesia means eloquence, frankness, articulation and freedom of speech. In daily life, parrhesia is related to the expression of somebody’s mind (action de tout declarer, tout exprimer).  Greek culture also denotes parrhesia as the political right to express somebody’s mind. The concept of parrhesia also contains the aspect of freedom in using the language. Indeed, the Hellenic root of parrhesia sets the course of the meaning of the word in the Scripture. This paper is divided into three parts to have a solid grasp of the meaning of parrhesia and its influence on evangelisation. The first elaborates on the development of the meaning of parrhesia using Foucauldian discourse analysis. The second explains how the word is used in Scriptural text (LXX and the New Testament). Finally, the scriptural meaning of parrhesia is perceived in the context of evangelization and the Church’s prophetic voices throughout history

Abstract

Solidarity is a value rooted in the understanding and commitment of faith to respond to and seek solutions to the concrete problems of human life for the development of life together. Solidarity is also one of the values and life practices of the Church that has been internalized and passed down by Jesus and his disciples. However, over time, the value of solidarity has become increasingly eroded by the currents of the times. In the situation of the weakening of human solidarity values in the post-modern era, Pope Francis, in his pastoral vision, calls on the faithful to internalize and cultivate the value of solidarity, especially towards the small, the poor, the oppressed, and the forgotten.Through this article, the author focuses on exploring Pope Francis's ideas about solidarity towards the poor. The research method used is qualitative literature study with a descriptive analysis approach. The purpose of compiling this article is to explore and discover the meaning of solidarity based on Pope Francis's ideas. The results of the research show that reflections and ideas about solidarity from Pope Francis can contribute to theological reflection and can also become priority values that can be lived and interpreted within the framework of means of accountability of faith and salvation in the midst of communal life.

Abstract

Palestine is a country where the population is around 4-5 million. The current Christian population in Palestine is around 6 percent of the total population. These are religiously oppressed people who are affected by the political turmoil of Israel and Palestine. This community is in dire need of a correct and adequate understanding of the theological meaning of the Palestinian experience of suffering in relation to Israel. The Bible has been misused to legitimize political interests. Naim Ateek believes that they are suffering and hopes that the Church will be able to build and explain a theology of liberation for Palestinian Christians. With the method of literature study and comprehensive reading, it is found that Naim Ateek makes a new hermeneutic so that God is not understood as a Primitive and Exclusive God as described by Israel who takes sides and discriminates, but a Universal and Inclusive God to realize justice in the spirit of compassion and peace so that it can show the harmony of God for the peace of the Palestinians and Israelis.

Abstract

This article discusses the correlation between the local wisdom of the Manggarai community expressed in the proverb "uwa haeng wulang langkas haeng ntala" and the ethical concepts of Imam Al-Ghazali in the context of character education. "Uwa haeng wulang langkas haeng ntala," an ancient proverb of the Manggarai people, teaches the spirit of reaching for aspirations as high as the sky. Meanwhile, Al-Ghazali's ethics emphasizes character formation through moral values and justice, with a focus on the noble goal of eternal happiness in the afterlife. This article examines how these two thoughts can be integrated to strengthen character education in self-development. The practical implications of this connectivity discuss the challenges and benefits of character education, as well as how local values can complement universal ethical concepts.

Abstract

The foundation of this study is the problem of social and spiritual orphanhood that transwomen in Yogyakarta's Seruni Community encounter as a result of social and spiritual exclusion.  It is vital and urgent to contemplate interfaith pastoral counseling for the psychological and spiritual well-being of transwomen. The purpose of this qualitative study is to determine (1) how the transwoman community manages psychological and spiritual crises brought on by social and spiritual exclusion before getting interfaith pastoral counseling? (2) how does interfaith pastoral counseling contribute significantly to the psychological and spiritual well-being of transwomen? Transwomen going through spiritual and psychological orphanhood in Yogyakarta's Seruni Community served as the research subjects for this qualitative study. The study's findings indicate that (1) the transwoman community is marginalized in terms of both social and spiritual circles. Trans women pursue psychological and spiritual well-being through the communities they build before obtaining interfaith pastoral treatment. (2) Faith communities are contemplating interfaith pastoral counseling as a pastoral response to transwomen who are experiencing both psychological and spiritual orphanhood. Transwomen's psychological and spiritual well-being can be greatly enhanced by interfaith pastoral counseling, allowing them to fully flourish as persons and transform as believers.

Abstract

Nowadays, pornography has spread to all circles of society. It turns out that pornography is not only a consumption of young people or teenagers, but also a problem for adults. However, most scientific journals discuss the issue of pornography in relation to young people. It is as if pornography is only a youth problem. From the data obtained, it turns out that many adults also access pornography and not a few are already at the level of addiction. Even those who are supposed to be the guardians of morality, such as educators and the clergy, have problems in this regard, as Pope Francis has stated. Therefore, pornography has become a community problem that should be a common concern and should be handled together. In this article, the author tries to raise the issue of pornography, which has become a problem for all members of society. The research method taken is by using a literature study. The data is analyzed using the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach. As a theoretical framework to help the analysis, the author uses religious, moral, and social ethics theories and touches on psychological approaches. With this, the author found the impacts caused by pornography as well as efforts to deal with it.

Abstract

The implementation of “Religious Moderation” has been the priority of the Indonesian government since its official introduction by the Ministry of Religious Affair in 2019. From Catholic perspective, religious moderation is perceived as the Church’s openness to build culture of engagement indicated by the willingness to build dialogue and collaboration to promote social justice, morality, freedom, and peace. Religious moderation is in line with Pope Francis’ latest encyclic of Fratelli Tutti where all people are called to work together for the common good. Nevertheless, the implementation of religious moderation has raised several questions, particularly on how this vision can be put into practice in school context. Every school has different contexts which needs to be considered in applying religious moderation. Based on this concern, this research wants to focus on the teacher’s implementation of religious moderation in the context of Catholic religious education. The researcher chose religious teachers considering that religious moderation should give deeper impact on the learning process for faith formation. This research also pay attention to Jesuit education. Jesuit education is focused on creating “school of dialogue”, a model of Jesuit education that is centered at Catholic values and traditions, and at the same time, being aware of its position in the midst of religious plurality. This study is qualitative. The data were gathered through questionnaires that contain both closed-ended and open-ended questions. The participants of this study were 17 Catholic religious education teachers from six Jesuit High Schools in Indonesia. The data were gathered first in May to July 2022, but then the researcher continue to elaborate dan deepen the data from November to December 2023.

Abstract

In the shadow of strong traditional customs, Batak Toba women are subjected to the authority of men, be it husbands or male relatives, and are confined to the role of Parhobas (servants) for every family event. Ivone Gebara's thoughts would provide inspiration to address the challenges of gender inequality through empowering women and inclusive human values in open dialogue, aiming for personal and social transformations that are inclusive, just, and sustainable, following the social-cultural context of Batak Toba in Indonesia. The focus of Ivone Gebara's theological thought aligns with the principles of Liberation Theology, emphasizing the importance of efforts to connect the Christian faith with the lives of communities affected by social and economic injustice, along with solidarity with the poor and oppressed. This research used a literature review method by examining recent articles on Ivone Gebara's thoughts. She critically observes the patriarchal structures in society and the Church, advocating for the need for critical reflection in inclusive and egalitarian interpretations of women's experiences to promote gender equality. Gebara's thoughts serve as a foundation to enrich public narratives and support education and feminist awareness for social change within the Batak Toba community. Contextualizing Gebara's ideas in Indonesia, particularly in the Batak Toba culture, can support movements and awareness regarding religious norms and encourage open discussions about women's roles in diverse societies.

Abstract

The present study aims to identify an effective way of promoting employee engagement through interfaith dialogue. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, and the sample consisted of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia employees. As a Catholic institution, Atma Jaya is committed to the values of the Christian faith and Pancasila (Tuhan dan Tanah Air), which reflect Indonesia's diverse cultural and religious landscape. The university's founders envisioned an academic community embodying Christian faith, excellence, professionalism, and care (Kristiani, Unggul, Profesional, Peduli-KUPP). However, building these values in every community member has proven to be a challenge, as evidenced by the low level of employee engagement.Employee engagement is an essential factor in promoting individual well-being and organizational success. It refers to the positive, fulfilling, and meaningful involvement in work activities characterized by dedication, enthusiasm, and absorption. Work plays a critical role in societal development, as it contributes to advancing various fields and providing goods and services. In this regard, Atma Jaya can leverage dialogical approaches to enhance the quality of social life in society. The university has adopted a strategy for promoting dialogue among individuals from diverse ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, known as "Refleksi Karya." This approach involves seven steps of dialogue of action, emphasizing the view that work is a manifestation of faith in God.Faith is a strong belief in the doctrines or teachings of a particular religion. A pluralistic society refers to the practice of religious or spiritual beliefs within a community characterized by diversity in religious, cultural, and philosophical perspectives. Promoting open and constructive communication between religious groups fosters understanding, reduces misconceptions, and promotes cooperation among people with diverse beliefs. The ultimate objective is to achieve social harmony, where individuals of different faiths can coexist peacefully, collaborate for the common good, and contribute positively to the community's and society's overall well-being. Atma Jaya's "Refleksi Karya" approach invites individuals to reflect on their responsibilities through seven steps of dialogue of action, including looping, awareness building, sharing, teaching, reflecting, confirming, and doing.
