Abstract

The story of the miracle of the wine in wedding at Cana is one of the most significant narrative text in the New Testament. Jesus did his first sign at the beginning of his public ministry. This study of the account of the wedding at Cana in Jn 2,1-12 is influenced by two statements “he revealed his glory and his disciple believed in him (v.11). I will approach the text by analyzing the characterization of every character in the narrative: how the character works to contribute to the theological perspective of the Gospel? The literary structure of the periscope is analyzed, and the meaning of the sign is understood as a Messianic miracle that leads the disciples to a firm belief in Jesus as the Messiah. It is argued that the revelation of glory does not create faith directly but it is link with the faith that the secret is only reveled to those who believe. The miracle of the wine is then able to reveal a profound secret concerning the person of Jesus, his union with the Father. The faith of the disciple in this text is not only an initial faith but a total faith in Jesus.

Abstract

This paper discusses the concept of public theology, which involves dialogue and engagement with society, aiming for social justice, community welfare, and the common good for the world. It emphasizes the necessity for public theology to address issues affecting the wider community and to use language and logic understandable and debatable by the public. Although aligned with political and liberation theology, public theology tends to be more reformative than revolutionary. The Perkampungan Sosial Pingit (PSP) in Yogyakarta demonstrates concrete involvement in social work, reflecting public theology. This research highlights the engagement of PSP volunteers, the relationship between emotional impulse and compassion, and the impact of social involvement on religion and theology. Furthermore, it shows how social activism and theology influence and enrich each other, providing inspiration for the involvement of young people in social work and public theology.

Abstract

According to the statistics, most of elderly people in Indonesia depend on younger generation to fulfil their daily needs. Many of them still need to work. Pension fund also gives little contribution for the elderly who previously worked at institutions. The level of knowledge on pension fund among Indonesians is still low, which also contributes on low participation in pension fund. Within this context, the Catholic Church in Indonesia implements concretely a faith that promotes justice. This is a literature review which aims to provide a deeper understanding on how Catholic pension fund institutions have implemented Catholic Social Teaching in Indonesian context, especially in the terms of “a faith that promotes justice”. This research uses pastoral circle scheme, which was popularized by Joe Holland and Peter Henriot, as a method for theologically reflecting the role of Catholic pension fund institutions in Indonesia. For this purpose, the author also learns from documents of the Church and the Society of Jesus, which express the slogan “a faith that promotes justice”. From the research, the author finds that only Laborem Exercens mentions clearly about people’s right to receive pension, when, at the same time, the Church also urges care for old people. Since this minimum regard for pension fund does not reflect real faith implementation of the Catholic Church related to social justice practices, especially care for old people and pensioners, Catholic pension fund institutions in Indonesia play a great role in sounding real concern of the Catholic Church.

Abstract

An acolyte, serving the priest during the Eucharist, plays a significant role in ensuring the smooth execution of the Eucharistic celebration, aiding the congregation in participating the Eucharist more devoutly. The Patron Saint of the acolytes is Saint Tarcisius, who dared to sacrifice himself to death to protect the Blessed Sacrament. Therefore, the acolyte needs to emulate Saint Tarcisius in carrying out his duties as an altar server. The acolytes at Saint Francis Xavier Parish, Kidul Loji, Yogyakarta lack a profound understanding of the patron of their ministry, leading to a deficiency in their representation during Eucharistic celebrations. This research aims to understand the extent to which the acolytes embody the spirituality of Saint Tarcisius, recognizing a gap in their knowledge about his life. Conducted descriptive qualitative research, this research focuses on active acolytes from Saint Francis Xavier Parish, totalling 20 individuals. Data collection involves observation, document study, and interviews. The findings revealed that a majority of the acolytes lacked a deep understanding of Saint Tarcisius's life story, resulting in a limited grasp of the spirituality he exemplified. In response to these findings, the researchers suggest that the parish should organize activities to familiarize acolytes with Saint Tarcisius and his spirituality. A proposed recollection activity aims to address these knowledge gaps, offering the acolytes a chance for spiritual enrichment and enthusiasm in carrying out their duties meaningfully. Keywords: spirituality; Saint Tarcisius; acolyte

Abstract

Talithakum is an internationally networked organization that works on humanitarian issues, especially human trafficking. It is managed collaboratively by leaders of women's religious congregations worldwide. In Indonesia, Talithakum is managed by IBSI or Ikatan Biarawati Seluruh Indonesia (Nuns Association of Indonesia) and is spread into nine networks. One of these networks is the Talithakum Yogyakarta Network. Using the literature study method, this research explores and examines the values of Gemma Tulud Cruz's theology of migration in the Talithakum Yogyakarta Network. The results showed that Talithakum Yogyakarta Network, as a humanitarian organization, applies the values of Gemma Tulud Cruz's theology of migration. The spirit of solidarity, the spirituality of courageous hope, and the crucified people live clearly in various work programs run by Talithakum Yogyakarta Network. The values of Cruz's theology of migration are seen from simple efforts such as educational movements as a preventive stage to assistance and sustainable handling actions for migrants. Talithakum Network Yogyakarta is committed to realizing a world free of human trafficking. This commitment is also important to be owned by various elements of society, including the Church, to build civilization and a dignified life.

Abstract

Transgender communities perceive Christians as oppressive, intolerant, and obsolete, especially when the latter condemns them. Transgender, loosely defined, is a person who feels that [her] gender identity does not conform to [her] sex assigned at birth. This experience can also be called gender identity disorder (GID). Few transgenders decide to go as far as undergoing sex reassignment surgery and hormone therapy. This paper seeks to explore the concepts of transgender identity by offering comparison to the concepts of transability. Transability, loosely defined, is a person who feels that her disabled identity does not conform to her able-physical body. This can also be called Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID). A transabled person, for example, feels that she is a limp—having limp identity—despite having normally healthy legs. Few transabled individuals decide to go as far as undergoing amputation. This paper, incorporating theological perspective on the sanctity of human body and philosophical considerations of bodily integrity, invites us to come up with a consistent ethical stance that either acknowledges both (GID and BIID) as expressions of diversity or rejects both (GID and BIID) as forms of disorder.

Abstract

This research aims to explore and analyze the positive influence of implementing Faith Formation based on age groups and sustainability (Formatio Iman Berjenjang dan Berkelanjutan) by applying design thinking as a pastoral method on the faith formation of Alpha Generation children. Faith formation based on age groups and sustainable as the pastoral focus of the Archdiocese of Semarang aims to form Catholics who believe in an intelligent, resilient, missionary and dialogical way that leads to information (knowledge), formation (formation), and transformation (change to be more faithful to achieve the perfection of the Christian life). The Design Thinking method is useful for designing creative and innovative implementation strategies according to the age level and needs of Alpha generation children. The research applies qualitative research methods through observation and interviews with children who join the Children's Faith Assistance (PIA), facilitators, parents, and parish priests to see the experience and application of FIBB with the Design Thinking approach for children. Based on the results of observations and data collection, FIBB with a design thinking approach has worked very well and can answer the needs of the people, for example, the implementation of Children's Catechesis which is held in the smallest unit of the parish and Catholic Parenting. Both mentoring programs are a form of innovative faith formation design that is based on the specific needs of the community. Through the design thinking approach created in coordination with FIBB, children's attendance in Children's Faith Development and donations for them have increased significantly

Abstract

Inculturation is one of the crucial aspects in the living out of the Christian faith. Without inculturation, the Christian faith would become alienated from the context of believers’ lives. Conversely, with inculturation, faith becomes more vibrant as it is not only expressed in accordance with the local context, but also touches the concrete lives of the people. This research concentrates in exploring the uniqueness and distinctiveness of the inculturation of four statues of Mother Mary within Javanese culture in several pilgrimage sites and churches. The four statues of Mother Mary are Dyah Marijah Iboe Ganjoeran, Maria Ratuning Katentreman lan Karaharjan in Gantang, Bunda Maria Stella Maris in Pacitan, and Maria Bunda Segala Suku in Jakarta. By using this qualitative method, the research employs literature review, interviews, and field observations. The aim of this research is to analyze the forms of Javanese-styled Mother Mary statues and reflect on them within the framework of theological inculturation. Based on Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic analysis, it is concluded that the Mother Mary statues are signs that representing her personality. As sign, each statue has symbolic meanings derived from its name/title, accessories, clothing, and body position. The theological reflection also indicates that each statue possesses dimensions of inculturation that align with the local (Javanese) cultural taste. Therefore, the acculturative effort towards these Mother Mary statues further supports the devotion of the faithful to the figure of Mother Mary, as one of the expressions of their faith.

Abstract

Since the Second Vatican Council, the Church has been concerned with the active participation of its members.  However, work demands have made it increasingly difficult for the faithful to participate in Church activities. This study aims to find a pastoral style that can encourage active participation among the faithful despite their work demands. The research employed the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) and comparative method to study the Friday Bikers Community, a categorical community in Banteng Parish, Semarang Archdiocese. The study revealed that the Friday Bikers Community serves as a model for the church, effectively balancing the demands of work and active participation in ecclesial activities. The Friday Bikers Community integrates churching in a genuine way, focusing on communio, relationships, inner dispositions, and existential limitations of its members.

Abstract

By conducting the toben lewo ritual, the religious community in Botung village organizes, interprets, and reconstructs their lives within the framework of achieving collective salvation. Salvation is manifested in socio-religious harmony, which is also an implication of the mainstreaming of religious moderation in Indonesia. This study elaborates on three main questions. First, how is the toben lewo ritual conducted? Second, how do the people of Botung village interpret this ritual? Third, what are the implications in promoting religious moderation in Indonesia? A qualitative method was selected with the aim of exploring the knowledge, experiences, opinions, and feelings of informants regarding the toben lewo ritual as a social salvation system in the context of religious moderation. The study was conducted in Botung village, Adonara Island, East Flores Regency. The techniques of data collection were observation, interviews, and document studies. The data collection was collected from September 2021 to May 2023. Primary data was obtained by conducting structured interviews with ritual participants and the representation of women and youth. The secondary data were from previous studies and documentary photographs. The findings revealed that by carrying out the toben lewo ritual, the village will be freed from guilt as the cause of disasters and calamities, which disrupt its relationship with the divine, ancestors, humans, and the universe. The ritual serves to restore and mend these three-dimensional relationships. The ritual brings forth and affirms harmony with the divine, ancestors, people, and the universe. This study can serve as a gateway to promote the idealism of religious moderation in Indonesia and enrich the knowledge in the fields of sociology and anthropology.
