Abstract

This study aimed to identify the reading instruction strategies employed by English teachers and how these strategies were implemented in the classroom.  This study followed a descriptive qualitative methodology.  Two first-grade English teachers from the school participated in the study.  The researcher watched each English teacher have two meetings.  A checklist of strategies and in-depth interviews served as the research tools.  The goals of the study were to determine the methods employed by English teachers and the extent to which these strategies were applied in the instruction of reading comprehension.  The data analysis process had three distinct phases: data reduction, data display, and interpretation or conclusion drawing.  Teacher, one employed a variety of tactics to help her students understand what they read, according to the results.  Methods included coming up with ideas, reading out loud, and requesting detailed information.  Two instructors employed nine different approaches.  The use of dictionaries, reading aloud, rereading to check understanding, assessing understanding in specific activities, and asking questions to get specific information were all things they were pushing for.  The methods for teaching reading comprehension were divided into three stages, and both instructors used and blended them.  Reading itself was divided into three phases: pre-reading, during-reading, and post-reading.  Reading comprehension was a strong subject area for instruction at that institution because of the tactics used.  The kids' enthusiasm, the students' focus, and the teachers' comfort level during the lesson were all indicators of this.

Abstract

This research critically investigates English Language Teaching methods and practices employed within the framework of the Single National Curriculum (SNC) 2020, focusing on the primary grade level. This study aims to assess the efficacy of these methods in enhancing language acquisition among students in grades I-V and in achieving the broader goals of educational equity and standardization across the country. This research also evaluates the alignment of the Single National Curriculum with internationally recognized English Language Teaching frameworks to examine whether it equips students to meet global language competency standards. The findings of the study reveal that although the Single National Curriculum marks a significant advancement in standardizing English language education in Pakistan, there are critical gaps that need to be addressed. These include inconsistencies in teaching practices, especially in public schools, insufficient focus on essential language skills such as listening, and inadequate attention to teacher development opportunities. This research also delves into these practical challenges faced by teachers in implementing the curriculum in classrooms namely, resource constraints, lack of professional development, limited time, and the need for curriculum adaptation to local and global contexts. The study concludes that for the Single National Curriculum to fully realize its potential, there must be ongoing curriculum refinement, enhanced teacher training, and the development of more contextually relevant educational resources. These steps are essential for aligning the Single National Curriculum more closely with international English Language Teaching standards and for ensuring that it effectively meets the diverse needs of Pakistan’s primary school students, thereby fostering a more globally competitive and equitable education system.

Abstract

This study examines the issue of distorted identities in Ahmed Saadawi's Frankenstein in Baghdad, set in post-2003 war-torn Iraq. The novel, inspired by Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, depicts a creature “Whatsitsname” created from the body parts of war victims, representing the fragmentation of both individual and national identity at a period of tremendous violence and instability. This study looks at how Saadawi depicts the collapse of personal and moral identities in the characters of Hadi, Mahmoud, and Baghdad residents as they deal with the horrors of war and occupation. Furthermore, the novel criticizes the erosion of Iraqi national identity, highlighting the profound sectarian splits that match the creature's fractured form. By examining the blurring lines between justice and vengeance, victim and offender, the study contends that Frankenstein in Baghdad is a profound meditation on the complicated process of identity building and destruction in combat zones. Additionally, the study adds to the increasing body of scholarship on Middle Eastern postwar fiction by highlighting how literary works can shed light on the sociopolitical reality of oppressed states.
