Abstract

Members of modern society receive a lot of news that is not true or even lies, but strangely, society easily accepts the news. This phenomenon occurs in a modern era that experts call post-truth. Initially, this phenomenon was used more for political interests but then spread to various areas of society's life. There are similarities between post-truth and hoax news (fake news) because both are wrapped in shocking headlines and are able to attract public attention, even though they are not balanced with data and facts, maybe even using fake data whose truth is unclear. This paper is a literature study with a descriptive-critical approach to the sceptical attitude of the Apostle Thomas and its implications for society in the post-truth era. The main question of this research is “how does Thomas’s perspective become a dialectical-critical paradigm in dealing with the problem of hoaxes in modern times?” The main objective of this paper is to explain Thomas’ sceptical attitude as a model of critical reasoning dialectics as an inspiration for assessing the problem of hoaxes in the post-truth era.

Abstract

In the community of Buru Island, the muka ptukar tradition is a practice of exchanging women as a substitute for dowry. In this tradition, the groom's sister is exchanged with the bride’s brother. This study aims to describe and analyse the muka ptukar tradition of the Waeapo plains community in Buru Island, from the perspective of gender and exchange theories. This study uses a qualitative method, with descriptive and analytical research types. This paper uses several data collection techniques, such as literature, interviews, and observations. The location of this research is the Waeapo plains, Waepsalit Village, Metar Hamlet and Lele Village, Buru Island. The results of the study indicate that the muka ptukar tradition is still alive today, especially in Waepsalit Village, Metar Hamlet, and Lele Village. In fact, in this practice, women are often considered as “exchange tools” for the benefit of men that women are forced to become “dowry”. Abstract

This article discusses Arendt and Sen’s concept of freedom. The two thinkers discuss this topic in the context of social and political life. The main question that this article addresses is: “What are the similarities and differences between Arend and Sen on freedom?” Using a critical analysis approach, this article argues that although these two thinkers come from different eras their thoughts on freedom have some agreements and specific differences. Their agreement here points to some similarities, supports and connections between their thoughts whereas the different positions here refer to some specific ideas which is mainly due to some specific or peculiar context of their ideas on freedom. The similarity between the two thinkers is that they indirectly agree that freedom is concerned with the capability or all the possible ways to be and to do, and the absence of repressive policies. Nonetheless, Arendt’s reflections on freedom were not in an atmosphere of socio-political emergency marked very seriously poverty, injustice, tyranny, and political pressure. Sen, on the other hand, was precisely in that atmosphere: the problem of welfare, contemporary poverty, injustices, contemporary capitalism.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the role of family in fostering Catholic religious knowledge for children’s personality development using George Herbert Mead’s sociological theory. Mead believes that the formation of individual personality is inseparable from social interactions that take place in the family environment. Through the concepts of “self” and “generalized other”, family, as the child’s closest social environment, plays an important role in the socialization process of Catholic religious values and teachings. This article employs a qualitative method by interviewing several Catholic families in Saint Joseph Parish, Poka-Rumahtiga. The results showed that families, especially parents, have a central role in introducing, teaching, and instilling Catholic religious knowledge and practices to children. This process occurs through symbolic interactions between children and parents and other family members. Children then develop self-understanding (self) and internalize the role of “others” (generalized other) in the context of Catholic religious teachings, which ultimately shapes children’s personality and morality in accordance with Catholic values

Abstract

The Tanimbar society views women as a source of life for all mankind. In married life, women’s dignity is highly respected with customary rules or laws called harta pakai and harta buang. However, in the development of customary rules, the laws began to fade in the face of various other types of laws such as civil law and religious law. The main question of this study is: “How is the transformation of the Tanimbar people’s views on the dignity of women in the relationship between the practice of harta pakai and harta buang in the context of the complexity of law and values?” The purpose of this study is to describe the complexity of law and values that affects the transformation of the concept of women in Tanimbar. This study used is a qualitative method and the data presented is qualitative or descriptive. Data are collected through interview and observation techniques. The findings indicate that the exchange of property in marriage practices illustrates a sign of appreciation and gratitude for women who have cared for and raised their daughters until they enter the stage of marriage. However, in practice, this appreciation begins to change and makes women like mere objects or commodities.

Abstract

Human life is a gift from God that must be cherished and protected from the moment of conception until natural death. Therefore, every family member is obliged to respect and care for life in all its forms, including efforts to prevent actions that devaluate life, such as suicide. The importance of the family’s role in protecting and nurturing life led Pope John Paul II, in the Encyclical Evangelium Vitae, to describe the family as “the sanctuary of life.” This means that the family is the first environment where the values of life and human dignity are instilled. The research aims, first, to provide Catholics with an understanding of the Church’s view regarding the importance role of the family in protecting and respecting human life. Second, the author wants to highlight the values and principles taught by the Church to guide families in creating an environment that supports life, as well as preventing actions that threaten life, such as suicide.
