Post-tsunami, many encouragements such as international agencies, local, and government cooperate to rebuild the affected areas including Banda Aceh. Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC), University of Syiah Kuala, has begun to produce the disaster alert school program (DAS) by reaching out to the prominent stakeholders in creating a community of disaster-resistant character that is the school community. This study was conducted to determine the level of students’ knowledge of the Earthquake and Tsunami on Disaster Alert School and Non-Disaster Alert School in Kuta Raja, Banda Aceh. The population is 4 elementary schools (2 DAS and 2 Non-DAS). Samples were taken 20% of 196 or 40 students for DAS and 40 students for Non-DAS. The method used is the descriptive method and the data collection technique is the questionnaire. Data analysis technique is by calculating the percentage. The results showed that the students of the Disaster Alert School (DAS) answered a few questions correctly with the percentage of correct answers is 46,3%, while students from Non-DAS have 66,3% the correct answer percentage. So the level of students’ knowledge from DAS in Kuta Raja is less than students from Non-DAS had which is classified as enough.

Abstract

The present qualitative study was concerned with the opening and closing verses in the Holy Quran. In effect, the study analyzed the opening and closing verses of 14 surahs to find out the central themes upon which they begin and come to a close. The analysis was conducted using the Persian translations of the verses as well as seeking help from the available Quran commentary or exegesis written in English. The analysis of the opening verses of the selected surahs revealed three central themes: (1) some surahs begin with words that praise and eulogize Allah, (2) some with imperative sentences or commandments addressed to the Holy Prophet, and (3) some related to specific events and times. Regarding the closing verses, the findings were not uniform across the selected surahs; while in some surahs the closing verses together with the opening verses deal with a similar topic or theme, in some other surahs the closing verses are concerned with different topics.

Abstract

Computers and Internet have successfully provided students with various online educational services. With the latest developments in the mobile technology, new methods are emerging to provide educational services through mobile technologies such as mobile phones and PDAs. By providing the educational services using the wireless medium, the educational institutions can facilitate self-access learning.  By using the mobile educational services, lecturers and students can access the services anytime and anywhere they want. This paper discusses the possibility of providing architectural heritage studies on web application through mobile technology. This offers a new approach in architectural education, namely imparting knowledge, or facilitating the imparting of knowledge, through a medium other than the traditional methods used in polytechnic. It does not seek to replace the conventional methods of teaching, which have traditionally been through lecture classes and design studios. It merely aspires to bridge some of the gap that is found between the two and thereby promote better understanding of architectural knowledge. The case study is an important tool in architectural education. Students learn by analyzing, comparing and evaluating aspects of important architectural works. By providing a tool by which this evaluation is facilitated and enhanced through the process of associative thinking, architectural learning is enriched. The paper will conduct formative evaluation of the student projects with the aim to test the feasibility of providing mobile educational services for diploma level architectural students in Port Dickson Polytechnic.  The study found that the mobile learning can be a useful complement to the current computer based learning. Keywords: Heritage, Web, Mobile Technology, Mobile Learning

Abstract

The results of Indonesian students' mathematics learning scores from UN, PISA, TIMSS and INAP show unsatisfactory results, students are still weak in cognitive skills. Math learning aims to equip students with logical, analytical, systematic, critical, and creative thinking skills, as well as cooperative skills called higher order thinking skill (HOTS). The 2013 curriculum requires students to be familiar with HOTS issues. HOTS has a relationship and influences students' cognitive style. The purpose of the study to determine the difficulties of students in solving the problem of HOTS on geometric problems regarding cognitive style. Research using the qualitative approach, research subject consist of field dependent student (FD) and field independent (FI). Research instruments are HOTS test, interview, and GEFT test. Data analysis was done based on Miles and Huberman's stages: data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results showed that: 1) FD students tend to experience difficulties in the transformation and coding stages, 2) FI students tend to experience difficulties in the process skill and coding stage.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the module that have been developed to improve the student's interest in learning, the advantages and disadvantages of the module, and the implementation of module for learning. The method of this research is Research and Development. The research population is science students class X in Senior High School 1 Peusangan, and sample group which determined by random technique is science student class X-1. The collected data are data of module assessment by teaching materials expert; media expert; and the teacher, data of student interest before and after learning with module, student’s response about the module, and teacher interview. The research instruments are the module assessment sheet for teaching materials expert; media expert; and the teacher, the student’s interest in learning questionnaire, questionnaire for student response, and the interview guidelines for teacher. The module effectiveness is determined with statistical test t correlated to average gain student interest before and after learning with module. The results showed significance difference between students' interest before and after is 41.30 % and students’ positive response about module is 73.43%. Analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the module is obtained that module can create active learning for students with a scientific approach, but the participation of the teacher and completely facilities determine the learning process.
