Abstract

The first grade students of State Senior High School 1 Gandapura batch 2020/2021 were having problems in speaking skill and yet they are expected to be able to express ideas in the interpersonal, transactional, and functional communication. Storytelling has been extensively implemented in the learning process and shows a significant result on students’ speaking skill. However, no study had ever highlighted an important gap in the literature about students’ anxiety in using storytelling technique with picture series. This study aims to find out the significant difference in achievement between students who are taught by using storytelling technique with picture series and those who are not taught by using storytelling technique with picture series. Furthermore, it explores students’ anxiety in using storytelling techniques with picture series. Two classes were randomly selected for the sample of the study. Tests and questionnaires were used to collect the data. It was analyzed by using SPSS and Microsoft Excel. The finding shows that the students’ achievement in the experimental class group were significantly improved than those of the control class group in terms of speaking in English. In addition, most of the students experienced high level anxiety when they had little time to think about what they had to say in English as well as when their oral skills were tested. Subsequently, the students are likely to experience low level anxiety due to their poor pronunciation and intonation. However, they experienced a moderate level of anxiety when the storytelling technique with picture series was used in speaking. Keywords: Speaking; storytelling technique; picture series; teaching speaking.

Abstract

The research entitled "Kupiah Riman Ornament Motifs as a Cultural Representation of the Acehnese Community '' aims to determine the Acehnese decorative motifs on Kupiah Riman as a cultural representation of the Acehnese people. Kupiah Riman is one type of handicrafts in the province of Aceh which serves to cover the head. Kupiah Riman is made from palm fiber. The manufacture is done manually with weaving and embroidery techniques, but this research focused on decorative motifs that are consistently applied to the kupiah. The approach in this research was qualitative with a descriptive type of research. The research data collection was done by means of observation, interview, and documentation. The data analysis was carried out by means of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The sources of data in this study were Kurniadi, the owner of Kupiah riman production as well as craftsmen, Badriyah, Nurhammah, Yunidar, Aisyah, and Nurhayati as Kupiah riman craftsmen, and the object of this research was the composition of motifs on Kupiah Riman. The results showed that the motifs applied consistently to Kupiah riman included the rainbow lines (Gareh peulangi), bamboo shoots (Pucok reubong), rectangular flowers (Bungong petak), Aceh Door (Pinto Aceh), headland flower (Bungong keupula), Cloud flower (Bungong Awan). These motifs are a description of natural and man-made phenomena that are used in people's lives to meet basic (primary) or additional (secondary) needs. This natural phenomenon is always present and is considered to have a role in the cultural life of the Acehnese people. These phenomena are abstracted into decorative forms using stylization and deformation techniques and even distortion and applied to Kupiah Riman. Therefore, it is clear that the motifs applied to the handicraft products of “Kupiah Riman'' represent the culture of the Acehnese people. Keywords: Crafts, culture, society, Kupiah Riman.

Abstract

This study aimed to look at the translator's translation tactics and determine which ones are utilized the most and which ones are used the least. In the movie Grown Ups, the researcher focused on the translation procedures in idiomatic idioms from English to Indonesian. The method of data collecting in this study was content analysis, and the research design was descriptive qualitative. The researcher used Baker's (2018) theory to categorize the different types of translation strategies, which include: 1) using an idiom with similar meaning and form, 2) using an idiom with similar meaning but dissimilar form, 3) borrowing the source language idiom, 4) translation by paraphrase, 5) translation by omission of a play on idiom., and 6) translation by omission of the entire idiom. The results revealed that the movie contained 94 idiomatic expressions, with the most common strategy being translation by paraphrasing (62 data or about 65.96 percent), followed by translation by omission of a play on idiom (21 data or 22.34 percent), translation by omission of a play on idiom (four data or 4.25 percent), and using an idiom of similar meaning and form (three data or about 3.19 percent). Furthermore, the translator's least-used tactics were adopting the source language's idiom and translation by excluding the full idiom with two data points each, accounting for 2.13 percent of the total. These tactics assist the translator in overcoming the challenge of translating idiomatic terms, as well as make the translation results enjoyable and acceptable to the audience. Keywords: Translation, idiom, American movie, translation strategies.

Abstract

Poverty is a complex and multidimensional problem that is influenced by various interrelated factors, including: income level, education, access to goods and services, geographical location, gender and environmental conditions. Overall poverty rates have declined in all regions over the last 10 years. However, if we look at the poverty rate in the South-West (Barsela) region of Aceh, it is higher than the provincial and Indonesian averages. This indicates that there are many people living below the poverty line in the Barsela area. The phenomenon of working poor above certainly raises the question that there are things which are the determining factors why the welfare or income of workers is still very low. This study aims to analyze the income determinants of the working poor in the South-West Aceh region in 2010 and 2020. These determinants include socio-demographic variables, namely gender, area of residence, marital status, age, education level, business field, employment sector, and number of hours worked. The data used is secondary data and taken from Central Bureau of Statistics of Aceh. This study uses comparative descriptive qualitative analysis with sample of Susenas 2010 is 15.830 persons and the number of workers 3.589 persons. In addition, sample of Susenas 2020 is 17.197 persons with the number of workers 7.013 persons. On the other hand, women experienced a decline. Thus, this data remains unchanged in that the latest data in 2019 shows that the number of workers is also still dominated by South Aceh Regency at 98,000 people and the lowest is Subulussalam City at 29,000 people. Based on this data, it is suggested to the district/city governments in the Barsela region to improve the welfare of the working poor through the provision of allowances to the poor, so that they are able to get out of the poverty trap. Keywords: determinant, working poor and Barsela region.
