Abstract

This study is aimed at investigating the types of heroism values portrayed in an Acehnese heroine in the novel Perempuan Keumala by Endang Moerdopo. The descriptive qualitative research design was applied in conducting this literary research. By using documents and discourse analysis in the novel, the dialogues between the characters and descriptions of expressions and events were used to analyze the types of heroism values embedded in the main character. The results showed that all types of heroism values were found in this heroine. They are moral greatness (17 data), ability (18 data), action in the face of opposition (6 data), and triumph in spirituality (5 data). From those values, the ability was the dominant type possessed by the heroine. Her moral greatness comprised persistence, caring, surrender to Allah, sacrifice, and courage. In ability, she had fighting skills, seen by others as a special woman, could conduct her duties as a wife, mother, and a wise leader commanding incredible missions. Moreover, in action in the face of opposition, she always helped others in need and enforced the law responsibly. Finally, in triumph in spirituality, she achieved a great victory in defeating the enemy and brought glory to Aceh. These values are strongly related to the religion and culture of the Acehnese people. Therefore, by studying heroism values of a society through literary works, researchers can also understand the society’s wisdom of life and how they overcome struggles. Keywords: Heroism values, Acehnese history, Acehnese heroine, Keumalahayati.

Abstract

The intercultural approach to English language teaching and learning has been taught and implemented in Indonesian universities in multiple names: intercultural communication, intercultural pedagogy, and others. In essence, intercultural values are promoted and inculcated into Indonesian learners of English. However, the pedagogy itself can be interpreted diversely across individuals and contexts. The present study strives to reveal the interrelationship between teacher personal development and teacher belief in shaping one’s intercultural profile positioning. This is vital for understanding the real implementation of the intercultural pedagogy in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching setting. As a qualitative exploratory case study, this study interviewed six teachers of three universities in Indonesia. Their voices were extracted and analyzed to understand the teachers’ positionings related to intercultural EFL pedagogy. The qualitative data analysis identified some themes related to the individual teacher beliefs, which emphasized resistance, contradiction, and ambivalence as intercultural EFL teachers. The present study highlights these intercultural profiles and emphasizes the importance of understanding EFL teachers’ intercultural positioning to improve the quality of the intercultural pedagogy. The intercultural approach to EFL teaching and learning is known to be highly personal, contextual, and dynamic. Understanding the formation of teacher identity and awareness of the sociocultural relations in EFL teaching contexts should be a matter of concern for future research and EFL teacher professional development. Keywords: intercultural pedagogy, teacher education, Indonesian universities, and intercultural profiles.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop a reading assessment instrument that can be used by teachers to assess students' reading skills in learning Indonesian Language in elementary school. In addition, the developed instrument can also be used by teachers as a learning tool or learning strategy in reading. Among the instruments that were developed are reading comprehension assessment instruments in the form of cloze test. The study was carried out using research and development methods. The review process consists of three phases, namely the needs analysis phase, the design and development phase, and the implementation and evaluation phase. The needs analysis phase was carried out in three elementary schools in the Banda Aceh City area, involving both teachers and students from the schools. Based on the data from the needs analysis (phase 1), the study continues with the instrument design and development phase (phase 2), and after the developed instrument meets the validity and reliability prerequisite conditions set by the expert and user assessments, the next phase is implementation and evaluation (phase 3). The third phase of the study was carried out in two stages, namely the implementation and evaluation of small groups/preliminary field testing (8 students) and the implementation and evaluation involving one class students/operational field testing (23 students). The results of the third phase indicate that the developed instrument of reading comprehension assessment in the form of cloze test is effective, right on the target, in accordance with the stage of students' reading ability, according to the needs of the teacher, and can be used by the teacher as an assessment instrument and reading learning strategy. Keywords: development research, reading comprehension, assessment instrument, cloze test

Abstract

This study aims to determine the perception of society on the impact of the University Student Goes to Children (US Goes to Children) community-based teaching program in improving the English competence among young village learners. The data were collected from the communities found in four villages: Lampermai, Kahju, Gampong Jawa, and Darussalam. The findings show that the community-based teaching program fosters positive relationships with the villagers and children in the research locale. The program was able to advocate positive outcomes through a method called Fun-Game-Award. Thus, the parents knew what kinds of activities their children were involved in. Some of the activities done by the teaching community were playing guessing games, singing songs, and telling stories. The results indicated positive perception for the participating community groups which makes it a viable mechanism in teaching English language competence among villagers. Keywords: US Goes to Children, Fun Game Award, society’s perception, young learners.

Abstract

This study focuses on “Local Political Party and Ethnicity Influence on Acehnese Election”. Theoretically, this study is expected to aid in the field of local politics, specifically elite politics and ethnicity. Through this study, the researchers are expected to broaden their education on the conceptual understanding of ethnicity. In the modern world, ethnicity is continually decreasing and replaced by social ethnicity based on economical class or other privileged groups. Through this study, the researchers observe the elitist behaviours that cause ethnicity and, theoretically, lead to thought discussion on the field of ethnicity, especially on the perspective of “instrumentalist/constructed ethnicity”. According to this perspective, ethnicity was constructed by a party. Ethnicity was formed due to local elite political parties spurring their followers, taking advantage of their primordial inheritance despite applying to a nationalist environment. To this end, the actors were put on a behavior of political perspective related to forming relations. This study was done to understand the action of political elites, especially on how they presented their ethnicity in their area of authority. The result of this study is expected to recommend the government to propose a non-discriminative public policy. The result of this study can also be utilized by elite political parties to show the appropriate process to manage ethnicity in a political party. There are two processes to disclose the meaning of ethnicity (1) understanding the point-of-view of the subjects, known as first-order understanding, and (2) evaluating the occurrences, known as second-order understanding. First-person understanding was done by analyzing the subjects of the study to obtain the correct understanding. The research would explore the incentive of the perpetrator of those actions. The obtained information is known as Bergerian understanding. Keywords: Local Political Party, Ethnicity, Local Election.

Abstract

In the teaching of writing, there are generally several ways proposed by scholars, two of which commonly practised by teaching practitioners are the teaching of writing as product and process. The product-based approach, despite being a traditional way of teaching writing, still exists in the field of writing pedagogy. This is because many ELT practitioners seem to prefer this approach to any other. This paper therefore intends to look at this approach in terms of its features and effectiveness. The research used the method of library research; it was conducted by searching for relevant literature from different types of sources such as books, journals, and research reports. Based on the findings of the library study, it was found that, despite having some drawbacks, the product-based approach has several noticeable advantages. First, this approach can assist students to know how to produce a piece of writing with correct grammar. The other advantage is that the product-based approach seems suitable for students who are preparing for examinations and English proficiency tests such as the IELTS and TOEFL tests, the focus of which is usually on the end product. These advantages, among some others, appear to make this approach still have a place in the field of writing pedagogy.
