Abstract

This research aims to identify the causes of material failure in the flywheel housing of diesel engines used in dump trucks in corporate sectors such as mining, plantations and infrastructure in Indonesia. Through mechanical testing which includes visual observations, tensile, impact and hardness tests, as well as microstructural observations and chemical composition analysis, this research found that the flywheel housing material has brittle properties. The test results show the highest tensile strength of 23.021 MPa, the average impact value of 0.0417 J/mm2, and the average hardness value of 106.708 VHN. The microstructure of the flywheel housing material is dominated by the Al-Si alloy element, which makes the material tend to be brittle. Several factors that can cause cracks in the flywheel housing include the work environment, material properties, lack of maintenance, and operational errors.

Abstract

Leaf springs are an important component of a truck's suspension system, but they can suffer premature failure due to extreme road conditions and inadequate maintenance implementation. This can disrupt construction projects and lead to increased costs. A study was conducted to investigate the factors that cause leaf spring failure on the Hino FM 260 JD unit in the Indrapura–Kisaran toll road construction project, North Sumatra. This study found that the average life of front leaf spring components is shorter than the manufacturer's recommended service life. This was caused by the extreme road conditions in the region, as well as inadequate implementation of maintenance by the project team. Adopting new replacement recommendations will result in reduced component efficiency and increased prices. The findings of this study emphasize the importance of proper maintenance and replacement of leaf springs to prevent disruptions in construction projects. This study also provides insight into the factors that can cause premature leaf spring failure, which can be used to improve the reliability of truck suspension systems. The results of the analysis provide recommendations for planning the replacement of one type of spring with a range of 46,011.62 to 51,959.58 kilometers.

Abstract

Occupational health and safety, especially in heavy equipment projects, is very important to avoid work accidents. In the field of construction and mining, work accidents that are often experienced are usually run over, and hit. Most of these accidents are caused by operator or human negligence factors, as well as factors from machines or tools. On the hydraulic excavator there is a swing movement, this movement has the potential to cause work accidents such as hitting an object in the swing area because the object is in blind spots that cannot be measured and seen by the operator. In this study, the authors designed a tool that functions as a warning system and monitoring for detecting swing motion obstacles in the swing area to avoid the accident, while testing the performance of the system that has been created. The design of this tool uses an ultrasonic sensor HC SR-04 which is able to detect an object with ultrasonic waves, LCD 1602 as a monitoring tool for the distance between the sensor and the object that blocks the swing motion, and with the addition of a buzzer as a warning system that will sound at a certain distance. Thus the operator can anticipate if there are objects that block the swing motion. The overall test results of the system that has been created show that the front section obtained a test success rate of 84% with a standard deviation of 0.3116, and the back section obtained a test success rate of 86% with a standard deviation of 0.2916.

Abstract

Inventory management is a crucial aspect of company operations, particularly in the context of heavy equipment service unit services. This research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) method in controlling the inventory of spare parts for the XCMG XE490DK excavator service unit at PT Multi Usaha Tambang. With a focus on implementing EOQ on several sample spare parts, such as Oil Engine Gulf Super Duty Vle 15W-40 CL-4, Oil Filter LF9080, Fuel Filter/Water Separator FS19763, and Fuel Filter FS1000, this research found significant results. The research results indicate that the application of the EOQ method at PT. Multi Usaha Tambang is able to determine the optimal order quantity, optimal order frequency, optimal safety stock, and optimal reorder point for each spare part sample. More importantly, the EOQ method has been proven to be significantly more advantageous, with its ability to save inventory costs by up to 92.10%. These findings contribute positively to the operational efficiency and profitability of PT. Multi Usaha Tambang. The implementation of this research highlights the importance of applying the EOQ method in managing spare parts inventory, especially for the XCMG XE490DK excavator unit. This study provides a strong basis to recommend the EOQ method as an effective approach in optimizing inventory control and substantial cost savings.

Abstract

Based on field observations, the exhaust brake component on the Hino 500 FM 260 JD unit frequently experiences breakdowns. One of the primary causes of failure is the ingress of mud into the exhaust chamber, which disrupts the functionality of the component. This study aims to compare the performance of exhaust brake components with and without a protective cover to enhance their lifetime, analyze the failure rate, and calculate the potential lost cost associated with exhaust brake failures in hauling units. Data collection was conducted directly in the field, and protective covers were installed on three dump truck units in the hauling fleet. The test results indicate that when the exhaust brake component was used without a cover, 14 failures were recorded, whereas with the cover installed, only 4 failures occurred. These findings demonstrate that the protective cover significantly impacts the lifetime and failure rate of the exhaust brake component. Following the testing phase, a potential lost cost analysis was conducted, considering four cost variables: spare parts, production losses, operator costs, and mechanic costs.

Abstract

This research aims to optimize consumable goods inventory control for dotting gloves items in a heavy equipment company. The inventory control process uses mathematical calculation methods, namely additional inventory (buffer stock) and reorder points as well as designing a web-based inventory application system. The research results showed that stock outs occurred repeatedly for dotting gloves. In 2023, the initial inventory of this item will be out of stock for 4 months. The frequency of purchasing dotting gloves is relatively small, only done twice in 5 months. After calculating the buffer stock and reorder point, the company is advised to place a reorder when the stock of dotting gloves reaches 83 pairs or 7 dozen to maintain the continuity of the company's operations. Next, a web-based inventory management application was created to automatically detect reorder points on dotting glove items.

Abstract

This study analyzes engine damage characterized by high blow-by pressure on a Caterpillar 320 GC excavator unit operated by PT XYZ. The damage is indicated by reduced engine power (low power), along with the emission of white smoke from the muffler and crankcase breather. The analysis was conducted using several methods, including blow-by pressure measurement, Scheduled Oil Sampling (SOS) analysis, engine disassembly (overhaul), and root cause analysis through fishbone diagrams, 5W+1H method, and fault tree analysis (FTA). The results showed that the blow/-by pressure reached 2.72 inH₂O, indicating a deteriorated engine condition. Oil analysis (SOS) detected high concentrations of wear metals, particularly iron (Fe) at 97.2 ppm, suggesting severe wear on internal engine components. After the overhaul, significant wear exceeding standard tolerance limits was found on the cylinder liner, piston, and piston rings. The primary cause of the high blow-by pressure was identified as wear on the piston rings, pistons, and cylinder liners due to increased levels of wear metals and oil contamination by fuel (fuel dilution), which reduced lubrication effectiveness. This condition was triggered by several contributing factors, including insufficient operator training, improper maintenance procedures, lack of adequate early detection systems, and extreme working environment conditions. As a result, the engine suffered damage and experienced a significant loss of power. The recommended solutions include replacing the worn components (cylinder liner, piston, and piston rings), improving operator training, and implementing a stricter preventive maintenance schedule to restore engine performance and extend component lifespan.

Abstract

In mining operations, the maintenance of heavy duty trucks such as the Scania P410 is essential to ensure sustained performance and operational reliability. One critical component of this unit is the centrifugal oil cleaner filter, which maintains oil purity and extends engine lifespan. However, several practical issues arise during maintenance, notably the difficulty of removing the filter housing due to slack nuts and its limited accessibility. This study presents the design and implementation of a special auxiliary tool intended to overcome these challenges and improve maintenance efficiency. The research applied the 7Ups++ innovation method, encompassing problem mapping, root-cause analysis, idea exploration, design, and implementation. The newly developed tool was fabricated using steel materials and validated through field testing at PT United Tractors, Site Muara Teweh–Tuhup. Experimental results demonstrated that the tool effectively facilitates housing removal, reduces the risk of component damage, and shortens maintenance downtime. The solution also contributes to cost reduction, enhanced technician safety, and improved work quality. Standardization and operator training were identified as key elements for broader implementation across field service operations.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the productivity of the Volvo EC480DL in coal loading activities at Pit 2 Bangko Barat, PT Bukit Asam Tbk. Heavy equipment productivity is an important parameter in determining the success of mining operations, particularly in achieving production targets. The research method employed includes literature review, field observations, and the collection of primary and secondary data. The analyzed parameters consist of cycle time, bucket capacity, bucket fill factor, swell factor, and work efficiency. The results show that the average cycle time of the equipment is 20 seconds with a work efficiency of 69%. Based on these parameters, the productivity value obtained is 239 tons per hour. Further analysis indicates that equipment productivity is influenced by several factors, including front loading conditions, hauling road conditions, and limited effective working time. Nevertheless, the monthly production results indicate that the company’s production targets have been achieved. Therefore, productivity improvement can be achieved through the enhancement of operational conditions in the field, improvement of operator skills, and optimization of effective working time. The findings of this study are expected to serve as a basis for evaluation and decision-making in improving the performance of loading equipment in coal mining operations.

Abstract

Excavators are heavy equipment that rely on hydraulic systems to operate components such as the boom, arm, and bucket with high power and precise control, making them essential in construction and mining operations. This study investigates the causes of high hydraulic lubricant consumption in a 230-ton excavator over a specific period based on the unit’s operating hour data. Excessive lubricant consumption has the potential to reduce system performance and increase operational costs; therefore, this study aims to provide an in-depth analysis and management recommendations. The causes of failure were identified as being related to component lifetime limitations. Preventive maintenance and routine inspections are required to prevent further damage and extend component service life.
