Abstract

Music functions as one of the most pervasive channels for transmitting human values, including those of a spiritual and religious character. This study investigates how the act of prayer (du'a) is represented as a mode of Islamic communication within the lyrics of the Indonesian indie song Ada Titik-Titik di Ujung Doa composed by Sal Priadi. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach grounded in Charles Sanders Peirce's triadic semiotic framework encompassing representamen, object, and interpretant the research systematically identifies and classifies semiotic signs as icons, indices, and symbols. Data were drawn from the song's official lyrics and supplemented by secondary literature on Peircean semiotics and Islamic communication theory. Three principal semiotic categories were identified. Iconic signs encode sincere devotional attention (ihtimam) through vivid visual imagery. Indexical signs point directly to established Prophetic worship practices, particularly the pre-sleep supplication (du'a qabla nawm), and to the ongoing process of forgiveness (al-'afw). Symbolic signs, most prominently the metaphor of 'dots at the end of a prayer,' embody submission (tawakkal), patience (shabr), and the value of mutual supplication (du'a li al-akh). The findings affirm that contemporary popular music can serve as an effective medium for Islamic da'wah.

Abstract

The rapid proliferation of digital audio-visual platforms has created new public spheres in which persuasive discourse about women's empowerment circulates at an unprecedented scale. This study examines the deliberative rhetorical strategies deployed in the women's mindset narrative presented in episode #67 of the Indonesian YouTube podcast Suara Berkelas, featuring guest speaker Lavina Sabila. Guided by Aristotle's tripartite model of persuasion ethos, pathos, and logos the study adopts a descriptive qualitative method with rhetorical analysis applied to the full 52-minute 29-second podcast transcript. Data were gathered through systematic observation and documentation, and analysed using Miles and Huberman's interactive model alongside triangulation of sources, techniques, and time. Findings reveal that ethos is established through Lavina's professional credibility as founder of Inong Carong and lived experiential wisdom; pathos operates through emotional resonance with gender stigma and personal vulnerability; and logos is constructed through rational arguments regarding financial independence and skill mastery as antidotes to fear. The coherent interplay of these three pillars constitutes effective deliberative rhetoric that orients female audiences toward transformative cognitive and behavioural change. This study fills a gap in scholarship on podcast rhetoric that has remained predominantly masculine in orientation.

Abstract

Media coverage of government programs is rarely a neutral act; it is always shaped by the editorial values, institutional interests, and sociopolitical environment of the outlet producing it. This study examines how Jawa Pos Radar Kudus framed its coverage of the food poisoning incident linked to the Free Nutritious Meal (Makan Bergizi Gratis/MBG) program at SMAN 2 Kudus in January 2026, an event that placed both a national food security initiative and local governance under public scrutiny. Adopting a qualitative approach grounded in the constructivist paradigm, this research applies Robert N. Entman’s four-element framing model define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgement, and treatment recommendation to five news articles published between January 29 and February 7, 2026. The analysis reveals that Radar Kudus constructed a critical-constructive frame, acknowledging the failures of technical implementation while consistently protecting the MBG program itself from systemic policy criticism. The local government was persistently portrayed as a responsive authority, while recommended solutions pointed exclusively toward internal system improvements rather than program discontinuation.

Abstract

Abstract : The phenomenon of political communication in Indonesia shows that YouTube functions not only as a medium for disseminating information but also as an arena for shaping public perceptions regarding issues of power, democracy, and political figures. This study examines political narratives and netizens’ responses to a YouTube video titled “Pandji’s Message to the President and Jokowi’s Political Dynasty,” which was uploaded to the Bocor Alus Politik podcast. The objective of this study is to analyze how the political messages in the video are received, interpreted, and responded to by the audience through comments, replies, sentiment analysis, toxicity, emojis, and semantic clustering. The research approach employs a qualitative method based on Social Network Analysis (SNA) grounded in Stuart Hall’s Reception Theory. Primary data was obtained from 3,592 YouTube comments, while secondary data was sourced from literature on digital political communication. Data collection and analysis were conducted using Communalytic.org, supported by VADER, TextBlob, word clouds, emoji clouds, semantic graphs, and toxicity analysis. The results indicate that the video generated a high level of digital engagement, particularly during the initial upload period, with a dominance of replies signaling active interaction among netizens. Comment sentiment was largely neutral, followed by positive comments indicating acceptance of Pandji’s criticism, while negative comments were relatively few. Toxicity levels were low, resulting in reflective discussions with minimal aggression. Semantic clustering yielded 65 main clusters and 1,452 outliers, indicating diverse interpretations of issues related to the political dynasty, Jokowi, Pandji, and democracy. These findings confirm that the digital audience is active in decoding messages, making YouTube a space for the negotiation of meaning, political expression, and the formation of public opinion. Practically, the results of this study provide benefits for researchers, the media, and content creators in understanding the dynamics of critical, participatory, and controlled digital political conversations, while also serving as a reference for effective political communication strategies in the social media era

Abstract

The rapid expansion of nickel mining in Indonesia has generated intensifying tensions between the imperatives of natural resource exploitation and the imperatives of preserving ecologically sensitive territories. This study conducts a comparative framing analysis of news coverage concerning nickel mining activities in the Raja Ampat archipelago, focusing on two influential Indonesian online news platforms: Tempo.co and Detik.com. Grounded within a qualitative research paradigm employing a comparative case study design, the investigation applies Robert N. Entman's four-dimensional framing model encompassing problem definition, causal diagnosis, moral evaluation, and treatment recommendation to ten purposively selected news articles published in June 2025. The analytical findings reveal that Detik.com predominantly frames the issue through a techno-administrative lens, accentuating regulatory violations and governmental corrective procedures, whereas Tempo.co consistently adopts a structural-critical orientation that foregrounds concerns relating to legal governance, constitutional principles, and civil society advocacy. These divergent framing tendencies illuminate how editorial orientation actively mediates the construction of environmental discourse within the Indonesian public sphere, confirming that media framing constitutes a constitutive rather than merely reflective dimension of environmental governance controversies.

Abstract

This study investigates how Kompas.com, a leading Indonesian online news platform, framed the devastating flood disaster that struck North Sumatra between late November and early December 2025. Guided by Robert N. Entman's (1993) framing model, comprising problem definition, causal diagnosis, moral evaluation, and treatment recommendation, the research applies qualitative framing analysis to eight Kompas.com news articles published between 25 November and 1 December 2025. Findings show that coverage evolved thematically: early reports emphasized humanitarian emergency and casualties, subsequent articles shifted toward environmental governance and political accountability, and later coverage affirmed the state's institutional response through presidential visits and police-led logistical aid. Ecological drivers such as deforestation and illegal logging, however, received markedly limited elaboration. This pattern indicates that Kompas.com privileged disaster impact and institutional response over structural ecological causation, shaping public understanding of the 2025 North Sumatra flood as a layered yet incompletely explained crisis.

Abstract

The diffusion of short-form video platforms has opened a new arena in which non-media actors engage in practices that resemble, and in important respects reconstitute, the norms and functions of digital journalism. This study examines how the TikTok account @gerakanberaninusantara, operated by the civic organisation Gerakan Berani Nusantara (G-BRAN), produces and distributes social and political information through platform-native communicative strategies. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through systematic content observation of ten purposively sampled videos, semi-structured interviews with account administrators, and digital documentation spanning December 2025 to April 2026. Analysis followed the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña interactive model and was theoretically grounded in Berger and Luckmann's Social Construction of Reality framework. Findings demonstrate that G-BRAN externalises organisational knowledge through visually encoded short videos; objectivates information by leveraging algorithmic distribution mechanisms including hashtags and the For You Page; and achieves audience internalisation through interactive engagement. These three social constructionist processes together constitute a discernible reconstruction of the digital journalism paradigm, in which authorial authority, presentational form, and distributional logic are all substantially transformed.

Abstract

The rapid proliferation of unverified information in contemporary social life has elevated the urgency of ethical communication practices grounded in Islamic values. This study investigates the representation of tabayyun as an Islamic communication ethic within the Indonesian religious drama film Tabayyun (2025). The concept of tabayyun, rooted in QS. Al-Hujurat [49]: 6, refers to the deliberate verification of information prior to judgment or action. Employing a qualitative methodology with content analysis, this research systematically examines scenes, dialogues, and visual symbols to trace how tabayyun is constructed and communicated through cinematic narrative. Three principal findings emerge: first, the film illustrates how the absence of tabayyun generates prejudice and social stigma; second, it portrays tabayyun as an active communicative process demanding courage and moral accountability; and third, it demonstrates that sustained practice of tabayyun facilitates conflict resolution and relational reconciliation. This study affirms that tabayyun operates not merely as a religious norm but as a transformative mechanism of ethical communication relevant to contemporary social challenges.

Abstract

Digital platforms have changed Islamic da'wah not only from the medium side, but also from the deepest structure. YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok are now the dominant spaces for religious communication in Indonesia reshaping the way Islam is expressed, authorized, and trusted by millions of digital Muslims. The study examines three interrelated dimensions: how digital platforms shape virtual religious expression; how algorithmic logic shifts religious authority from scholars and scholarly sanad to content creators and popularity metrics; and how the crisis of digital religious credibility arises when popularity replaces scientific competence in da'wah. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with critical discourse analysis, data were collected through digital observation of more than 150 da'wah content on three platforms, semi-structured interviews with seven deliberately selected informants, and documentation. The data analysis followed the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. The theoretical framework integrates Stig Hjarvard's theory of Religious Mediatization with the logic of Jose van Dijck's platform which includes algorithmicity, connectivity, popularity, and the economy of attention. These findings suggest that digital platforms impose a different grammar of religiosity that prioritizes spectacle, brevity, and emotional resonance over doctrinal depth. Algorithmic authority is progressively marginalizing scholars who do not adapt to the logic of the platform, while at the same time elevating da'i-influencers whose digital capital exceeds their scientific credentials. The result is a real crisis of credibility: Islamic knowledge is increasingly measured by the number of views and followers, not by sanad and scientific competence. This research contributes a new integrated analytical framework for the study of digital da'wah and provides practical implications for Islamic media literacy and da'wah communication ethics in the platform era.

Abstract

The development of digital space has transformed the communication patterns of santri, particularly in accessing religious knowledge, constructing identity, and responding to global values. Santri no longer engage with pesantren values solely through classical Islamic texts, the guidance of kyai, and Islamic educational traditions; they now do so also through social media, visual content, digital algorithms, and artificial intelligence. This study aims to analyze the intercultural communication accommodation strategies of santri in facing the ambivalence of global values in digital space. This study adopts a library research design with a qualitative-descriptive approach. Data were obtained through a review of journal articles, academic literature, intercultural communication theories, pesantren regulations, and relevant documents on pesantren, santri, digital da'wah, and global culture. The data were analyzed using thematic content analysis based on Communication Accommodation Theory, identity negotiation theory, and intercultural communication perspectives. The findings show that santri respond to the ambivalence of global values through value selection, communication convergence, identity divergence, and the internalization of digital adab. This study concludes that santri are active communication actors who adapt, filter, and affirm their Islamic identity in digital space, while pesantren function as value mediators between Islamic tradition and global digital culture.
