Abstract

Background: Traumatic ulcers are one of the oral cavity problems that have a large prevalence in society. The use of herbal medicine is still being developed, such as the use of bay leaves which aims to accelerate the healing process. The observable wound healing process is the amount of angiogenesis. Objective: To determine the role of bay leaf extract on angiogenesis in traumatic ulcers. Methods: The design of the laboratory experimental study with a total sample used 18 male rats, which were divided into 3 groups: the treatment group was given 5% bay leaf extract gel, the treatment group was given 7.5% bay leaf extract gel, and 1 control group. Each group consisted of 6 research samples. Results: The results of the One Way Anova test showed a significance value (sig) of 0.000, which means that the value was less than 0.05. Conclusion: Bay leaf extract has a role in increasing the amount of angiogenesis in traumatic ulcers

Abstract

Root canal treatment is a procedure to remove the infected pulp tissue from the tooth, then clean, fill, and seal it. The main steps are access preparation, cleaning and shaping, and obturation. One of the cleaning and shaping method is the step-back technique. This technique is the conventional technique performed by preparing the apical portion first. Step-back technique have its advantages such as more flaring in the coronal portion and more precise apical stop. This case report describes a 52-year-old male patient who came with a cavity in the upper right front tooth, the patient had felt a spontaneous pulses for one year, but the intensity had decreased. Radiographic examination showed the condition of the horizontal bone loss approximately 2 mm in the alveolar bone, periodontal ligament widening, and the lamina dura was discontinuity in the apical third. The diagnosis was made as symptomatic irreversible pulpitis with symptomatic apical periodontitis of tooth 13, and the treatment plan was root canal treatment. The treatment begins with caries removal, access opening, extirpation, and re-walling. On the second visit working length determination, root canal preparation using the step-back technique, administration of medicament. On the next visit the root canal was filled and closed with a temporary filling, and the root canal treatment of tooth 13 showed a good results.

Abstract

Background: Radiotherapy is one of the treatments given to cancer patients. The effects of radiotherapy can affect systemic conditions and the oral cavity. One of the effects that occurs in the oral cavity is the emergence of oral candidiasis infection. Objective: Describes the clinical findings and management of oral candidiasis in prostate cancer patients with a history of radiotherapy.. Case: A 72-year-old male patient complained of weakness, dizziness, bone pain, body aches, and muscle aches. The patient has a history of prostate cancer, bone metastases and routinely undergoes examinations at Moewardi Hospital. History of chemotherapy 6 times, and 10 times of light radioterapy. Intraoral examination showed a primary lesion in the form of a unilateral irregular white plaque on the lateral tongue in white with a soft consistency. The patient had difficulty opening his mouth. Case management: Systemic therapy in the form of infusion. NaCl 3% 500 ml, Inj Ceftriaxone 2x1 gr, Inj Ketorolac 2x30 mg, Po. Elkana 1x1. Conclusion: Oral candidiasis is one of the oral cavity infections caused by Candida albicans fungal infection. Conditions in patients with a history of radiotherapy can be a predisposing factor for the emergence of this infection. First-line topical antifungal therapy in the form of nystatin can relieve lesions along with information communication and education.

Abstract

The incidence of dental caries is still high in almost all populations in Indonesia. Continues efforts are needed to improve oral health status, one of which is education through social media. The author wants to know the effect of social media on student’s oral health care behavior. This quantitative study involved 23 FKG UMSurabaya based on non-probability sampling method with purposive sampling type with descriptive observational study and cross-sectional design. Data was collected through a survey using questionnaire. The results showed that respondents used a combination of several social media (95,65%) to find information about oral health. Tiktok is the most used platform (47,83%). A total of 56,52% of respondent used the Halodoc health service platform to access information, get advice, buy medicines or make appointment with a doctor. This shows that students are already able to identify information before it is later disseminated directly or through social media, which can potentially improve the oral health of the community.

Abstract

Periodontal disease can be caused by plaque bacteria. The plaque layer on the surface of the teeth is a biofilm containing an accumulation of microorganisms, including pathogenic bacteria, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. Bromelain is an enzyme produced by pineapples (Ananas comosus L.Merr) and is found in higher concentrations in the core. The ability of bromelain to break down proteins inhibits the formation of bacterial cell membranes. Objective: To determine the antibacterial activity of pineapple core extract (Ananas comosus L. Merr) against Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. Research Method: This study is an in vitro laboratory experimental study. The study design used was a post-test only control group design. The study sample was Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans bacteria obtained from the Microbiology Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine, Airlangga University, Surabaya. Results : The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) value was 0.78%, and the Minimum Bacterial Concentration (MBC) value was 6.25%. Conclusion: The pineapple stem extract (Ananas comosuis L. Meirr) exhibits potential antibacterial activity against the bacterial strain Aggregatibacterium actinomycetemcomitans.

Abstract

Background: Dental caries is a problem in the field of oral health that is widely suffered by the Indonesian people, especially in school-age children, namely 6-9 years. Dental caries in normal children aged 6-9 years reaches 92.6%, while in children with special needs it reaches 24%, which is obtained from the calculation of the def-t index (decayed exfoliation filling) to determine the number of deciduous teeth that have caries. Children with special needs, especially deaf and intellectual disability children are more susceptible to caries because they have limitations in themselves and need special attention regarding how they maintain their oral health. Purposive: This study aims to determine the comparison of def-t index in children with disabilities (deaf and intellectual disability) aged 6-9 years in SLB Kediri City. Methods: The type of research used is analytical observational with a cross sectional approach and sampling in this study by Total Sampling, namely sampling using the entire population in implementation of study according to the inclusion criteria. The samples in this study were 10 deaf children and 10 children with intellectual disability. Results: The results of the Mann-Whitney hypothesis test revealed a comparison related to the def-t index in deaf and retarded children aged 6-9 years. Statistical analysis using Mann-Whitney test obtained a significance value (p<0.05). Conclusion: There is a comparison of def-t index in children with special needs, especially deaf children and children with dementia aged 6-9 years in SLB Kediri City. Keywords: def-t Index, Special Need Children
