Abstract

This study examines the hermeneutical approaches of Fazlur Rahman and Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd in interpreting the Qur’an, highlighting their methodological innovations and epistemological divergences. Fazlur Rahman’s "Double Movement" theory seeks to bridge historical and contemporary contexts by extracting universal moral principles from Qur’anic injunctions, maintaining the text’s divine authority while advocating for contextual application. In contrast, Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd employs a linguistic-historical hermeneutic, treating the Qur’an as a "cultural product" shaped by socio-historical dynamics, thereby emphasizing its textuality over traditional theological frameworks. While Rahman’s approach aligns with Islamic moral-theological continuity, Abu Zayd’s secular-linguistic methodology, influenced by Western hermeneutics and post-structuralism, challenges classical exegetical norms, raising concerns about the Qur’an’s sacredness and normative authority. The study critically evaluates both models, revealing tensions between modernization and Islamic epistemological foundations, and underscores the necessity of grounding hermeneutical innovations within a tawḥīd-centric framework to preserve the Qur’an’s integrity as divine guidance.

Abstract

This research seeks to contribute to resolving the problem of the extent to which the meaning of the Almighty's saying:  (وَمَن نُّعَمِّرْهُ نُنَكِّسْهُ فِى ٱلْخَلْقِ ۖ أَفَلَا يَعْقِلُونَ)[Surah Yasin: 68], is consistent with modern scientific discoveries. The research aims to prove the truth of the scientific miracle in the aforementioned verse. The researcher followed the inductive approach in tracing the cosmic verses in Surah Yasin, which discuss the signs of God Almighty in the reversal. The researcher also followed the analytical approach by carefully explaining the intended vocabulary in the Quranic verses, detailing them from a linguistic perspective, and then clarifying their meaning in a comprehensive manner. The researcher also followed the comparative approach by comparing the statements of scholars of medicine, cosmology, and science with the statements of scholars of linguistics and exegesis. To arrive at the truth of the miracle, the research has reached a number of conclusions, the most important of which are: 1). The stage of decline for those who have reached old age is something that God Almighty has decreed for all of humanity, from which there is no escape. 2). Aging is nothing but a form of programmed death for the body, 3). Aging consists of comprehensive changes affecting all organs of the human body after its maturity and advancement in age, which leads to the loss of many of life's pleasures due to the inability to perform them. 4). People's lives pass through four stages: a). The first stage: childhood and growth, which extends from early life to the age of thirty-three, the peak of youth and maturity, b). The second stage: the age of maturity, which extends from the age of thirty-three to forty, the peak of strength and mental maturity, c). The third stage: middle age, which extends from forty to sixty, the beginning of human imperfection, but it is a subtle imperfection, d). The fourth stage: old age and apparent deterioration. According to doctors, this stage reaches 120 years of age. 5). The Qur'anic verses indicate that the elderly person's state changes from strength to weakness, encompassing both physical and mental change. This is consistent with what modern science has discovered, namely that aging affects all human organs.

Abstract

Many women are now experts in the fields of finance, business and muamalah, recognized globally, so there is no reason to prevent them from being witnesses. Witness eligibility should be based on competency, not gender. This verse needs to be understood contextually, by distinguishing between fixed religious teachings and those that can be adapted to the times. The main focus of this research is to explore the meaning of this verse, which is often debated regarding the role of women's testimony which is only half that of men's testimony. This research uses a qualitative research method with a type of library research, which relies on a study of literature and works relevant to this theme, including the hermeneutical thinking of Khaled M. Abou El-Fadl. The results of this research show that according to Abou El-Fadl, the interpretation of this verse must not only be seen from the historical context, but must also consider the principles of justice and equality in Islam. Thus, this research provides a new perspective in understanding gender justice in Islam, as well as how the authority of the text can be reviewed to create a fairer interpretation for women.

Abstract

This study examines the concept of mawaddah in the Qur'an by focusing on Hasbi Ash-Shiddieqy's interpretation in his monumental work Tafsir al-Qur'an al-Majid An-Nur. The word mawaddah, which is often translated as affection or deep love, not only has an emotional meaning, but also a broad spiritual and social dimension. Using a descriptive qualitative method and a thematic interpretation approach (maudhu'i), this study explores various verses containing the term mawaddah, and analyzes how Hasbi interprets and contextualizes it in the life of pluralistic and dynamic Indonesian society. The results of the study show that Hasbi does not limit the meaning of mawaddah to the realm of husband and wife relations alone, but expands it as an ethical value in building relationships between humans, including in the context of interfaith tolerance and social solidarity. Hasbi's interpretation combines the richness of classical interpretation with the spirit of Islamic renewal, making mawaddah a spiritual energy that forms a civilization based on affection and civility. This study emphasizes the importance of developing thematic interpretations that are responsive to the challenges of the times and rooted in Qur'anic values.

Abstract

This research discusses the concept of anger emotional control, a phenomenon that often occurs in the scope of society related to fellow humans, as a person easily vents his anger against anyone without accurate prevention and handling both verbally and nonverbally and how these topics will be discussed. Regarding the emotion of anger, it can usually be understood as bad behavior such as saying rudely, hitting, and showing scary expressions, with the guidance of lust al-anger can result in evil, for someone who cannot control his anger will fall into a loss. The definition of this assumption has been developed and found in dictionaries as well as current indexes. As a source of guidance for Muslims, the Qur'an provides many explanations about the emotion of anger in the focus of the term Ghadab and Ghilzah, so that this verse is easy for everyone to understand, of course it needs to be interpreted clearly and concisely. Therefore, the author here would like to try to offer a clear and concise explanation of the problem of conceptual control of anger emotions from the perspective of Prof. Dr. H. Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah in the tafsir of Al-Azhar, regarding the analysis of anger emotions in the Tafsir Al-Azhar and the stages of controlling the emotions of anger in the Quran according to the Tafsir Al-Azhar. This research is library research, for which the author takes steps to identify, collect, process and study existing data related to anger emotions, both in the form of primary and secondary data accurately and factually. Meanwhile, the secondary data in question are other literature in the form of research books and other articles which of course are related to the problem of controlling anger emotions in the Qur'an and Tafsir Al-Azhar. This study found several conclusions that the Qur'an describes anger in various terms, but the researcher's focus is on the terms ghadab and ghilzah. A more actual understanding of anger recognizes that this trait does have a place in certain situations, but it doesn't always have to be expressed physically. Often, it takes an internal effort to overcome it. The concept of anger is not only limited to its literal meaning, but it is also understood as a condition that has the potential to bring harm, which can cause a person to deviate from the truth. And according to the tafsir of Al-Azhar by Buya Hamka, the stages of controlling the emotion of anger are by dhikr to Allah, being patient, forgiving others, and doing ihsan, that is, always doing good to others.

Abstract

This article will discuss two main aspects of human rights. The first is the concept of freedom, and the second is the concept of gender equality. This discussion will use an Islamic approach with the method of maudhu'i interpretation. Freedom according to Islam is freedom that is more directed and limited, free but bound not to cross the limits set by Islam. In contrast to freedom according to human rights which tends to be liberal to do the will without limits, while not interfering with the rights of others. While gender equality according to Islam is equality that does not mean exactly the same, the equivalent referred to here is in the value of work done in the eyes of Allah SWT. In Islam men and women have their respective portions in carrying out their rights and obligations. This study dismisses the issue that states that Islam is a religion that is intolerant of human rights, especially in the aspects of freedom and gender equality. However, Islam has its own guidelines to regulate how to implement the concept of freedom and gender equality contained in the Qur'an.

Abstract

Nur Khalik Ridwan's tafsir of Surah Al-Maun examines the term al-miskīn in the context of social justice in Indonesia, emphasizing that poverty is not destiny, but rather the result of an unequal social structure. This study aims to reexamine the meaning of al-miskīn through Nur Khalik Ridwan's progressive interpretation, particularly in his Interpretation of Surah Al-Ma'un, and to analyze its relevance to the social reality of Indonesian society. This study uses a qualitative method with a library research type, making Ridwan's Tafsir Surah al-Ma'un the primary source. Through the adabi al-ijtima‘i approach and the tafsir tahlili method, Ridwan understands al-miskīn not only as individuals who are economically poor, but as symbols of the oppressed class produced by an unjust social system and rejects the notion of poverty as destiny. The results of the study show that Ridwan's interpretation is a form of renewal of Qur'anic interpretation that bridges the text and the social context, sides with the mustadh‘afīn (the oppressed), and reflects the spirit of renewal of Islamic thought in Indonesia. Ridwan offers a reading that encourages social change and structural liberation, in which ith'amu miskīn (feeding the poor) is understood as a symbol of the struggle against injustice.

Abstract

Riba is a topic of considerable debate in contemporary scholarship. Its prohibition is central to Islamic economic and moral philosophy, serving as a foundational principle that distinguishes Islamic finance from conventional financial systems. The Qur’an characterizes riba as a source of injustice and exploitation that undermines social equity and compassion. The Sunnah reinforces its gravity by categorizing it among the most serious transgressions. This study investigates Islamic teachings regarding the prohibition of riba. Although the prohibition is explicit, some scholars have challenged the operational definition of riba and presented arguments in its favor. This research critically evaluates these arguments, examines contextual interpretations of riba within changing economic frameworks, and traces the historical evolution of the distinction between usury and interest to determine its consistency with Islamic jurisprudence. The results demonstrate that the prohibition of riba reflects Islam’s commitment to promoting justice, equity, and moral integrity in economic interactions.

Abstract

Social media has become a dominant medium for communication and information exchange in contemporary societies, significantly influencing religious discourse and practice. In the context of Islam, social media platforms have emerged as important tools for Dacwah (Islamic propagation), enabling scholars and preachers to reach diverse audiences across geographical and cultural boundaries. This study examines the merits of the use of social media for Dacwah activities, with particular attention to its role as a source of Islamic knowledge, its wide audience coverage, its contribution to the protection of Muslim rights, its effectiveness in clarifying misconceptions about Islam, its use in fundraising for humanitarian causes, and its facilitation of marriage matchmaking in line with Islamic principles. The study adopts a qualitative research design based on an extensive review and content analysis of relevant scholarly literature, journal articles, books, and credible online sources. Findings reveal that social media enhances access to Islamic knowledge, strengthens engagement between scholars and followers, counters negative stereotypes about Islam, supports charitable initiatives, and provides alternative platforms for lawful matrimonial connections. The study concludes that social media, when responsibly and ethically utilized, offers significant opportunities for effective Dacwah in the modern age. It therefore recommends that qualified Muslim scholars intensify their engagement with social media platforms to promote authentic Islamic teachings and positively influence global perceptions of Islam.

Abstract

This study examines Sūrat Yūsuf (Qur'an 12) as a divinely orchestrated dramatic narrative that transforms reading into participatory spiritual experience. Integrating Reader‑Response Criticism with Sayyid Qutb’s concept of al‑taṣwīr al‑fannī (artistic depiction), it demonstrates how dramatic form—dialogue, suspense, irony, and symbolic staging—facilitates the surah’s pedagogical and spiritual function. Using Aristotelian principles of catharsis, peripeteia (reversal), and anagnorisis (recognition), the paper argues that the surah’s aesthetics are inseparable from its revelatory purpose: to awaken moral consciousness through active engagement. Sūrat Yūsuf thus functions not merely as a sacred narrative but as a divine script performed within the believer’s consciousness—an ongoing enactment of revelation that unites aesthetic pleasure with spiritual transformation.
