Abstract

This study examines violations of Grice’s Cooperative Principle in three pieces of content confirmed as hoaxes on the Komdigi website in its May 8, 2026, edition. The study employs a qualitative method with a pragmatic approach. Data collection was conducted through observation and note-taking techniques on the transcriptions of the three hoax content pieces, while data analysis involved identifying and classifying violations of the four maxims of the Cooperative Principles. The results of the study found a total of 16 violations spread across the four maxims: the maxim of quantity was the most frequently violated with six violations, followed by the maxim of quality with four violations, and the maxims of relevance and manner with three violations each. The hoax content regarding foreign ship tariffs in the Malacca Strait recorded the most violations with seven, followed by the TB vaccine hoax with five violations, and the Donald Trump video hoax with four violations. This study concludes that violations of the principle of cooperation in hoax content constitute a deliberate linguistic strategy to manipulate information, exploit the audience’s emotions, and sway public opinion without support from verifiable facts.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms and functions of code-switching and code-mixing, as well as to identify the factors that trigger their occurrence on Raymond Chin’s channel in the Escape podcast, episode 11, entitled “Cara Kebal dari Djinn, Setan, dan Iblis”. The research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The object of this study consists of words, phrases, and clauses that contain code-mixing and code-switching phenomena, as expressed in conversations throughout the podcast. Data were collected using observation and note-taking techniques. Based on the results of the data analysis, it can be concluded that the phenomenon of multilingualism in Escape podcast episode 11 appears in the forms of code-switching and external code-mixing. The use of code-switching and code-mixing functions as a strategic tool in conveying islamic preaching (da’wah), expanding audience reach, enhancing emotional engagement with listeners, emphasizing key statements, and demonstrating the speaker’s deep understanding of islamic teachings. Additionally, it reflects the speaker’s social and educational background and serves as an adaptive response to situational demands in communication. The factors contributing to the occurrence of code-switching and code-mixing include: (1) the social and religious backgrounds of both the speaker and the interlocutor; (2) the topic of discussion; (3) audience orientation; and (4) limitations in linguistic codes. Abstract

Amidst the rapid evolution and proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, the convergence of AI with second language acquisition (SLA) is becoming increasingly salient and pervasive. To assess the existing research on second language (L2) motivation in AI contexts and determine implications for future research, the present study aims to present a scoping review of research on AI-mediated L2 motivation. Specifically, this study aims to explore the frequently adopted theoretical frameworks, the motivational effects of AI on various specific domains of EFL and the factors that may influence the effects of AI-integrated L2 motivation. Totally, 26 relevant peer-reviewed articles (2020-2025) were selected based on Web of Science (WoS) for further analysis, using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocol (PRISMA-P). The results show that a) five major theoretical frameworks are primarily applied in L2 motivation in AI-mediated contexts, among which the self-determination theory (SDT) is the most frequently used; b) AI plays the facilitative and motivational role in varieties of language learning domains of L2, such as writing, speaking, vocabulary acquisition, grammar and translation; and c) three key factors influencing L2 motivation in AI-mediated learning are technical, psychological, and individual differences. Drawing upon these research findings, this review proposes prospective directions for the future exploration and practical application of AI in the realm of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learning and teaching.

Abstract

This study analyzes code-switching in some cases of informal classroom conversations among students from diverse regional backgrounds. The linguistic diversity within the campus environment makes code-switching a natural phenomenon that frequently occurs in daily interactions, especially before lectures begin. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method using observation and spontaneous conversation recording techniques involving two or more students. Data analysis is conducted using Fishman’s theory, which emphasizes the relationships among language choice, domain, and underlying social functions. The findings indicate that code-switching appears in both internal and external forms, occurring inter-sententially and intra-sententially. In the seven cases examined, code-switching is used to build rapport, reinforce group identity, clarify meaning, and adjust to the situation and interlocutors. Factors influencing the occurrence of code-switching include linguistic diversity within the class, conversational context, language habits, and specific communicative purposes. This study concludes that code-switching is a natural and adaptive communication strategy that plays an important role in maintaining smooth social interactions in a multilingual classroom environment. his research also contributes academically to enriching sociolinguistic studies on language use among students.

Abstract

The selection of a brand name is a critical strategic decision, as it serves as the primary foundation of the brand identity. In a competitive market, companies often form new words to name their brands in order to create a new, unique, and memorable identity for customers. This study investigates the types of word formation within 14 brand names of PT. Paragon Technology and Innovation through the lens of morphological theory and analyzes their contribution to the overall brand identity. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this research applies the theory of word formation processes as the analytical framework to classify and interpret the morphological structure of the selected brand names. The findings reveal six word formation processes, with borrowing as the most frequently used method, followed by affixation and compounding. The findings indicate that the formation processes are not only an additional mechanism but a meaningful linguistic technique to construct brand persona.

Abstract

Underlying sociopolitical and power dynamics influence the formation of discourses. Due to its cultural traces, the prevalence of Western elements in English textbooks is not exactly novel. However, the question remains whether the Western elements in English textbooks have any social implications, particularly the issue of Global English in the EFL landscape. Thus, this study examines the representation of Western cultural elements found in Indonesian English textbooks across two curricula and their implication towards Global English using critical discourse analysis. The results concluded that both textbooks represent Western-centric elements differently in the text, discursive, and social practice layers. Despite that, both textbooks consistently privilege Western values and cultures. Such representations challenge Global English principles that emphasises on cultural identity. Moreover, the findings also highlight how the representation of Western elements in both textbooks could cause cultural mismatches that make it harder for the students to internalise. The present study advocates the need for balanced materials that incorporate both Western elements and local cultures to nurture cultural identity, which is the core principle of Pancasila ideology that is used as the basis to create the Indonesian educational curricula.

Abstract

The rapid development of language on social media X has given rise to semantic shifts in the words bengek and bobrok. Both words are frequently used outside their original semantic contexts. Therefore, this study aims to describe the forms of semantic shift of the words bengek and bobrok on social media X, as well as to explain the influence of social media context on these shifts. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method. The data consist of sentences containing the words bengek and bobrok collected from social media X. Data were gathered using the observation method with note-taking technique, then analyzed using the distributional method with substitution technique. Data validity was ensured through source triangulation. The analysis results are presented informally. The findings indicate that bobrok undergoes more semantic shifts than bengek. The word bengek shifts through generalization, amelioration, and synaesthesia, whereas bobrok shifts through generalization, specialization, pejoration, and synaesthesia. Examined from the social media context, these semantic shifts are influenced by emotional expression context, evaluative and critical context, multimodal and sensory association context, as well as linguistic freedom and creativity context, which constitute the primary characteristics of communication on social media X. Perkembangan bahasa yang pesat dalam media sosial X memunculkan pergeseran makna kata bengek dan bobrok.
