Abstract

This study examines the meaning of verb affixation processes in news articles published by News UAD, with a focus on the affixation present in the verb word class. The main objectives of this study are (1) to define the meaning of verb affixation in News UAD articles, (2) to describe the meaning of verb affixation in News UAD articles, and (3) to highlight the dominant meanings of verb affixation most commonly found in News UAD articles. The data used consists of articles published between August 9, 2024, and October 15, 2024. The analysis results indicate that affixation on verbs attaches to four main meanings: performing an activity, or having someone else perform an action, producing, and making something. The prefix ber- tends to convey the meaning of performing an activity, while the prefixes me- and its variants men- and meng- are more dominant in conveying the meaning of performing an action for someone else or intending to do something. The circumfixes me-kan and meng-kan function to form the meaning of making something happen. This affixation process also often involves a change in word class from nouns to verbs. These findings show that the use of verb affixation in News UAD emphasizes news focusing on the processes or actions involved in various activities and events. The results not only highlight the dominance of verb affixation in News UAD but also reveal the presence of derivation, inflection, and allomorphs or sound variations.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the translation of the song lyrics Nemen from Javanese to Arabic, with a focus on pragmatic equivalence in illocutionary speech acts. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach with a product-oriented translation study. The data for this research consists of the song lyrics of Nemen in Javanese, which are translated into Arabic, sourced from the YouTube channel Kampung Arab Music. The data collection technique employs the listen and note method, where the researcher listens to the song lyrics in Javanese, identifies sentences containing illocutionary speech acts, and records the Arabic translation of those lines. The data analysis technique uses the interactive model, which consists of data collection, data reduction, and data presentation. The results of the study show that pragmatic equivalence can be achieved despite linguistic and cultural differences, while maintaining the illocutionary force in the translation. The illocutionary speech acts translated equivalently include directives, assertives, expressives, and commissives.

Abstract

This study investigated the motivated participation in spoken English learning among 148 Chinese tertiary English majors through a questionnaire survey grounded in Dörnyei’s L2 Motivational Self System framework. Descriptive statistics revealed two key dimensions of motivation: 1) the oral motivated self system, where participants demonstrated a high level of Ideal Oral Self, Group, and Peer, alongside a medium level of Ought-to Oral Self, Oral Learning Experience, and Class; and 2) motivated classroom participation, marked by a high level of Group and Peer and a medium level of Class. Independent samples t-tests identified no significant differences across six motivational factors between freshmen-sophomores or sophomores-juniors, but freshmen exhibited significantly stronger Class Environment engagement than juniors, indicating a decline in structured classroom motivation with academic progression. These findings emphasize the centrality of peer collaboration and ideal self-imagery in sustaining motivation while advocating for curriculum reforms to address declining classroom engagement in advanced cohorts. The study provides actionable insights for educators to design peer-driven activities and adaptive pedagogical strategies, ultimately enhancing oral proficiency and overall language competence among English majors.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of the slang word “anjir” in the verbal communication of students at Sebelas Maret University (UNS). The growing phenomenon of slang among teenagers, including university students, has prompted research on the dynamics of its use in everyday interactions. This study uses a mixed method, namely qualitative through descriptive analytical studies and reviews of several related journals, as well as quantitative through a survey of 50 students. The results show that the word “anjir” is quite frequently used in informal conversations; 46% of respondents stated that they use it often, 46% rarely, and 8% very rarely. This word is generally used to express emotions such as annoyance, surprise, or when joking, with the main reason being as a form of spontaneous expression, although a small number use it because of habit and the influence of their social circle. The students' views varied, ranging from considering it impolite to viewing it as normal in informal communication, thus showing that the use of the word “anjir” not only functions as a means of expressing emotions but also becomes part of the linguistic identity and social dynamics among UNS students.
