Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive syntactic analysis of tense phrases within the framework of X-bar theory applied to recount texts. Utilizing a corpus of diverse recount narratives, we employ a generative approach to scrutinize the hierarchical structure and syntactic relationships governing tense constituents. Our investigation reveals intricate patterns of tense phrase formation, shedding light on the underlying syntactic mechanisms that govern temporal information encoding. Through a meticulous examination of tense-related features, we uncover the nuanced interplay between functional projections and lexical elements, offering insights into the syntactic complexities of recount narratives. Furthermore, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of tense phrase structures, providing a foundation for future explorations in syntactic analysis. The findings herein not only advance our comprehension of temporal representation in language but also underscore the significance of X-bar theory in elucidating intricate syntactic phenomena

Abstract

Syntax is one of linguistics branches which studies about how words, phrases, clauses are arranged to form coherency. Clause as one of syntactic units has a crucial role in a sentence as it does as a complement that explicates a subject or object. Clauses are divided into independent clauses and bound clauses. An independent clause is a clause that has the potential to become a sentence, while a bound clause is a clause that has no potential to become a sentence and only has the potential to become a minor sentence. Bound clauses are dependent and require embedding in the sentence. Part of the bound clause is called a relative clause. This clause is usually attached with a subordinating conjunction which in the structure of the Indonesian language is marked with the particle which. Expansion clauses with words embedded in the main clause serve as a description of certain syntactic functions. There are three basic elements that formed a relative clause, these three elements are the core noun, the modifying clause, and the relative word. Many studies still discuss the various (general) functions of clauses and have not focused on one clause and/or its subordinates. This study aims to analyze the bound clauses in the Indonesian translation of the speech of King Charles III. The focus of this study is in the sentences which have bound clauses. The method used in this study is descriptive-qualitative including the techniques of observation, reduction, read, and note-taking. The collected data are then being described and elaborated explicitly by applying library method. Studies on the analysis of bound clauses are carried out using the ommision, insertion, and additional techniques. There are 17 sentences which have bound clauses and two of them are in relative clause.  Keywords: Bound Clause, Clause, Relative Clause, Speech, Syntactic.

Abstract

The influence of Generation Z's language style in speaking Indonesian in the era of globalization has a significant impact on the integrity of Indonesian as the national language and national cultural identity. Generation Z, who grew up in an environment filled with information technology and global media, displays a relaxed, fast, and creative style of communication, using abbreviations, emoticons, foreign words, and informal language styles. The influence of globalization and the popularity of English have also led to shifts in communication preferences, where Indonesian may become less attractive to Generation Z. Through a literature review, data searches were conducted to identify the language style of Generation Z and analyze it to find out the impact of using that style of language. The search results show the impact of Generation Z's style on the integrity of the Indonesian language in this globalization era.

Abstract

This study analyzes politeness strategies in request speech acts (du‘ā: دُعَاء) found in the Book of Prayers and Dhikr for Hajj and Umrah (Ministry of Religious Affairs, 2023). Using pragmatic frameworks from Brown and Levinson (1988), Blum-Kulka et al. (1989), and Leech (1983), the study examines 52 prayers based on sentence structure, communicative intent, and politeness strategies. The findings show a dominance of negative politeness, marked by indirectness, collective pronouns, and honorific expressions. Prayers beginning with اللَّهُمَّ /Allahumma/, رَبِّ /Rabbi/, and رَبَّنَا /Rabbana/ reflect varying degrees of personal and collective spirituality. Interestingly, prayers that do not explicitly address God also appear in nearly equal frequency, indicating the use of rich and diverse language variation within linguistic analysis. This variation enhances the sense of sincerity and depth in the supplication. The study affirms that prayer, while theological, is also a linguistic act shaped by politeness and dynamic spiritual expression. It reveals how religious language operates under pragmatic norms to convey trust, reverence, and humility in both traditional and evolving communicative settings.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify and analyze the acquisition of Sundanese language for children at the age of 4-6 years. Based on the theory of Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) which reveals that children aged 4-6 years are able to understand and mastering universal semantic features and the primitive meaning in the process of acquiring semantics by children. This study discusses two important points 1) How to represent the acquisition of morphology of Sundanese language in children aged 4-6 years 2) How to represent the primitive meaning of children aged 4-6 years. The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The results of the study show that: First, the mastery of Sundanese vocabulary for children aged 4-6 is dominated by verbs (44,07%) and followed by nouns (42,42%). Second, the primitival representation of meanings that have been produced by children 4-6 years has been able to reach 57 primitiva meanings from a total of 60 primitivative meanings in their speech. The primitivative meanings that are not produced by the child are the words NGALAKUKEUN ‘MELAKUKA’',RUPA 'MACAM' and BAGIAN ‘BAGEAN’ the non-appearance of meaning is caused by cognitive and knowledge limitations in the child. This research provide a contribution as a reference in planning Sundanese language learning in children in determining the design and curriculum for basic-level Sundanese language teaching. The conclusion of this research is, based on the results of the research that the vocabulary production of children aged 4-6 years is dominated by verbs, besides that, the meanings that the children have mastered are about 57 primitivas of a total of 60 primitiva

Abstract

This article analyzed Indonesian phatic expressions in the series entitled Cek Toko Sebelah: Babak Baru from episode 1-4. The objectives are to identify and classify the phatic expressions, identify translation techniques used, examine the forms shift, and assess the translation's accuracy and acceptability. This research is qualitative descriptive research, a single-embedded case study, and product-oriented research. Results show three forms of phatic expressions in the series; particle, word, and phrase. Furthermore, the analysis shows that four translation techniques are used: deletion, established equivalent, modulation, and paraphrase. Then, the translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability assessment result explains that the translation of Indonesian phatic expressions in Cek Toko Sebelah: Babak Baru is less accurate, resulting in an average score of 1.7.

Abstract

This study aims to classify the use of semantic marking in the Javanese language. It employs a qualitative descriptive approach. Specifically, this research analyzes marking based on syntactic principles, semantic principles, or a combination of both (syntactic and semantic), demonstrating that a portion of Javanese grammar utilizes semantic marking. The data in this study consist of Javanese utterances that contain semantic marking. The data sources are multiple, as the research involves more than one source, including books, relevant articles, and others. The data were collected using an observation method with a note-taking technique, followed by critical discourse analysis as an advanced technique. The data analysis technique involves three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study indicate that some of the findings include active-passive processes (transitive becoming intransitive) in Javanese, contrastive comparison marking (controlled vs. uncontrolled) from various perspectives, such as affixation (prefix ke-, prefix m-, or infix -em), argument shifts from SO to SA and vice versa, and others.  The implications of this study are expected to demonstrate the role of semantic meaning patterns marked in words, phrases, and clauses in Javanese through affixation, particles, or sentence structure changes.
