Abstract

Pulau Liki is one of Indonesia's outermost islands located in Sarmi Regency, Province of Papua. Situated in the midst of the Pacific Ocean, Pulau Liki possesses invaluable natural beauty, particularly the potential for its breathtaking coastal landscapes to become a promising tourist destination. Despite its unparalleled natural beauty, Pulau Liki faces challenges such as inequality, poverty, and underdevelopment. This article aims to identify the necessary preparations for achieving sustainable coastal tourism on Pulau Liki. Community Based Tourism is a proven model for developing sustainable tourism in various countries, with a focus on involving local communities in decision-making and environmental preservation. This article analyzes the role of communities in successful tourism development, especially in remote areas where the impact is felt by the local population. The study employs qualitative methods through intensive observation and the implementation of Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) to gain local perspectives on the development of tourism-based areas and the projection of CBT as a sustainable tourism development concept in Pulau Liki. The results indicate that the CBT concept is highly relevant to Pulau Liki, with the potential to enhance the well-being of the local population, protect biodiversity, and drive economic growth through Regional Original Income (PAD) and infrastructure development.

Abstract

Tari Dolalak is a traditional folk art from Purworejo that incorporates a blend of dance movements, musical accompaniment, and choral singing. It can be performed by both men and women, either in groups or as pairs. The Universitas Gadjah Mada Community Empowerment Learning Team (KKN-PPM UGM) discovered that the youngsters of Awu-Awu State Elementary School (SDN) expressed a keen interest in learning and practicing Tari Dolalak. Nevertheless, there are restrictions on accessing it due to the school's lack of organised extracurricular activities. Consequently, the team endeavoured to address the children's requirements by collaborating with Tut Wuri Dance Studio, as dance is a means of self-expression and has the potential to impact an individual's subjective well-being. This study employs descriptive qualitative methodologies and utilises descriptive analysis to examine the data, specifically focusing on the various aspects of Children Subjective Well Being. These aspects encompass positive emotions, negative emotions, satisfaction with specific subjects, and overall life satisfaction. Tari Dolalak serves as a medium for children to comprehend positive and negative emotions, including happiness, comfort, courage to perform, sadness, disappointment, and anger. This enables them to cultivate supportive and communicative relationships with their peers, trainers, and the UGM KKN-PPM team. Additionally, dance training empowers children to identify and explore their needs and interests.

Abstract

Several factors influence a child's interest in pursuing higher education, including their awareness of their own potential. Unfortunately, many students are unaware of their abilities, which affects their motivation in making further education choices. Limited information and the distance to schools can also impact the decisions of students at SMP Negeri 2 Kismantoro in continuing their education. This research was conducted as part of the UGM SCS-CEL program Period 2 of 2023 in Kismantoro District, Wonogiri Regency. The study aimed to explore the factors influencing students' motivation to continue their education to a higher level. The research process was divided into two stages: the pre-consultation assessment stage and the consultation stage. The data analysis method used was qualitative descriptiveanalysis. Based on the consultation with 21 students in grade IX of SMP Negeri Kismantoro, several reasons were revealed on why students did not continue their education. Major factors included mobilization constraints, particularly for students whose schools are far away and who lack private transportation. In addition, most students had not yet realized their potential. As a result, schools are encouraged to help students recognize their potential through interest and aptitude tests, as well as guidance and counseling. The assessments and consultations conducted can provide input for schools to address the problem of student dropouts. Furthermore, assistance from other parties is necessary to ensure the continuity of this program.

Abstract

The eyes play an important role in a student's life. When eye problems occur, there can be a decrease in visual acuity, which can impact the student's quality of life. This can be characterized by blurry eyes when looking at the blackboard or looking far away. Student activities often involve prolonged staring at close objects, such as reading, doing assignments, or using devices such as smartphones and laptops. Without realizing it, these habits become a risk factor for a student to experience refractive error in the form of myopia, or nearsightedness. Students who experience myopia often do not realize it, so as an effort to maintain eye health, it is necessary to conduct eye screening to find out whether students experience refractive disorders or not, including in Wedung Subdistrict which is the location of KKN-PPM UGM unit JT-13. In order to carry out community service, eye screening is carried out for junior high school students. Located in 4 junior high schools in Wedung Sub-district, visual acuity (visus) was measured using the Snellen chart. A total of 300 junior high school students were examined, 55 of whom had decreased visual acuity. After each examination, students were educated on how to maintain eye health. In students with decreased visual acuity, risk factors were explored. This article is designed to describe how the eye health screening was conducted, the condition of some junior high school students with decreased visual acuity, and the risk factors that may cause refractive errors. Data collection was done by listing the results of each school's visus examination and history taking after the examination. The results of the visual acuity examination were analyzed using a descriptive quantitative method, while the interview data were analyzed using a qualitative method. Eye screening in junior high school students is expected to be a health promotion tool for both students with refractive errors and those without, as a reminder to maintain their eye health. For students with refractive errors, the screening can be a prelude to further examination so that students get immediate treatment, which can be in the form of refractive correction with the use of glasses, so that the refractive error that occurs doesn't getting worse.

Abstract

This article discusses the program to optimise the potential of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in rural areas through a series of strategies that include data collection, registration of business licences, product certification, and development of MSMEs through aspects of packaging, branding and digital marketing. These programs were held in Wedung Village, Wedung, Demak. This service program aims to improve the quality of MSME businesses in the area through concrete steps. Data collection and registration of business licences is the first step in providing a legal basis and legality for MSMEs. Product certification is directed at improving the quality standards of MSME products, so that they can access a wider market. In addition, developing MSMEs through attractive packaging and strong branding will help differentiate products from competitors and build a positive image in the eyes of consumers. Digital marketing is considered as an effective tool in expanding market reach and reaching potential customers through online platforms. Through this approach, this article explores concrete efforts to strengthen MSMEs in rural areas, which in turn are expected to increase the local economy, create jobs, and reduce economic disparities between regions. By integrating data collection, business licences, product certification, and development through aspects of packaging, branding and digital marketing, this article provides a holistic view of how MSMEs in Wedung Village can optimise their potential and improve business quality to be sustainable.

Abstract

In the context of promoting sustainable development, coastal areas play a pivotal role in supporting local communities, as the region's economic activities heavily rely on its natural resources. One such coastal village is Wedung Village, situated in Wedung District, Demak Regency, Central Java. With its extensive coastal expanse, this area holds immense potential in terms of natural resources. The local community has undertaken various initiatives to harness these resources, including the establishment of shrimp and fish ponds, along with the utilization of diverse mangrove products. The significance of mangrove ecosystems in upholding the coastal equilibrium cannot be understated. However, these mangroves are currently confronted by an escalating threat of degradation due to land clearance for aquaculture ponds. This article centers on a community service program, specifically the development of the mangrove ecosystem's potential as part of the 2023 UGM Community Service Program-PPM (KKN-PPM) in Wedung Village, Demak. A range of programs aimed at tapping into the mangrove ecosystem's potential have been devised, encompassing education on the advantages and ecological importance of mangroves, mangrove ecosystem learning for students, mangrove distribution mapping, guidance on silvofishery practices, and the planting of mangrove saplings. The methodology employed involves a blend of literature review, on-site observations, and community engagement. Data collection done by direct observation and interviews with mangrove advocates and community leaders. The collected information is qualitatively and descriptively analyzed to perceive the potential of the mangrove ecosystem. From the data, Wedung Village had shown remarkable potential on mangrove ecosystems. The implementation of silvofishery practices emerges as a means to preserve the ecological role of mangroves and enhance aquaculture productivity. In addition, mangrove seedlings were planted as a form of conservation efforts. These initiatives have effectively heightened community awareness regarding the significance of mangroves and their sustainable stewardship.

Abstract

Kebonagung tourist village offers a variety of tourist destinations ranging from agricultural education, traditions, to crafts. As a complement, the manager of the tourist village provides a welcoming drink for visiting tourists. However, there has not been a welcoming drink and typical souvenirs from the Kebonagung Village. The dedication aims to create product processing innovations from local resources. The KKN-PPM UGM from Imogiri unit took the initiative to develop the Vegetable Hummingbird Wedang Uwuh product. This dedication begins with a preliminary survey, then continues with the process of developing wedang uwuh products using the drying method. At the end of the dedication activity, socialization was carried out regarding the production process of Vegetable Hummingbird Wedang Uwuh and a survey has done through interviews to determine the level of success of the dedication activity. Making Vegetable Hummingbird Wedang Uwuh begins with washing the ingredients thoroughly, sun drying the ingredients, drying the ingredients using an oven at 50°C, then packing the dry ingredients in tea bags to make the product easier to consume. The product is also repackaged in a paper pouch by paying attention to the packaging design so that a product prototype is produced. Vegetable Hummingbird Wedang Uwuh product development program is quite successful. This is proven by the results of interviews regarding the level of participants' understanding of the techniques for processing and packaging designs for Vegetable Hummingbird Wedang Uwuh. The commitment of local SME actors also supports the goals of sustainable development or Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Abstract

Ineffective waste management in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, coupled with weak community involvement, has led to protests and the closure of the Integrated Waste Management Facility (TPST). The government is actively seeking solutions by allocating specific land, fostering interregional cooperation, and providing waste sorting facilities for the public. However, waste management appears to be trapped in a vicious cycle due to the neglect of the community's role as a key stakeholder. This article bridges the gap between circular economy knowledge and waste management practices through youth involvement. The Youth Studies Center at Gadjah Mada University collaborates with entities such as Bank Sampah Tinalan, Daur Resik, Sawo Kecik, and DNVB Indonesia, engaging students from SMP Negeri 9 and SMA Negeri 5 in Yogyakarta in a campaign titled "Pilah.id." Using the action research method supported by the UGM DPkM 2021/2022 Community Service Grant, this program engages students from SMPN 9 and SMAN 5 Yogyakarta in self-managing waste. Post-action research surveys revealed that 85.7% of students actively engage in waste management after participating in the Pilah.id program, with 75% of them not utilizing local waste banks. While participants demonstrate a strong understanding of waste sorting, their involvement in local waste banks remains limited, highlighting the need for increased support and capacity building for these local waste banks.
