Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to describe the forms of discrimination, the causal factors, and the responses of Tionghoa ethnic women characters in facing discrimination in Clara Ng’s novel Dimsum Terakhir. Methodology: This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. The object of the study was Clara Ng’s novel Dimsum Terakhir. Data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques, and analyzed using feminist literary criticism. Data validity and reliability were ensured through semantic validation (expert judgment) and interrater-intrarater reliability procedures. Main Findings: Discrimination against Tionghoa women characters occurred in both domestic and public spheres. Domestic discrimination included seniority-based bias, while public discrimination involved racial slurs, denial of cultural rights, and physical violence. Political and ethnic factors were dominant causes. The characters primarily responded to discrimination with rejection, using verbal resistance and critical attitudes. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study highlights a specific intersection of gender and ethnic discrimination in Indonesian-Chinese women within literary narratives—an area still underrepresented. It advances feminist literary criticism by analyzing ethnic minority women’s voices in post-New Order Indonesia, enriching the understanding of layered discrimination in Southeast Asian literature.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to examine the language features used by students in writing discussion texts, specifically identifying the frequency and type of features such as modal verbs, conjunctions, and conditional clauses. Methodology: This qualitative descriptive study used documentation as the data collection technique. The research analyzed 28 discussion texts written by third-semester students in the Genre-Based Writing course at the English Education Department, UIN Walisongo. Analysis was conducted using Feez’s (1998) framework and the categorization of connectors by Celce-Murcia and Larsen-Freeman (1999). Main Findings: The study revealed that students frequently used modal verbs, particularly “can” and “will,” to express hedging and certainty. Causal connectors like “because” were used more than sequential ones, reflecting the argumentative nature of the texts. However, conditional clauses were underutilized or often misapplied. The texts exhibited general awareness of discussion text features but lacked full mastery in applying them correctly, especially in balancing argumentation and reasoning. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study contributes to genre-based writing pedagogy by specifically mapping the linguistic elements used in students’ discussion texts. Unlike prior research that mainly addressed discourse markers or argument structure, this study focuses on the integration of specific language features, offering insight into students’ actual grammatical competence within the context of academic genres.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to determine the use of audio-visual media in teaching students to write advertisement texts in poster form for class VIII-6 students at SMPN 87 Jakarta during the 2018/2019 academic year. Methodology: This study used a descriptive qualitative method. Data collection instruments included observation sheets, interview guidelines, assignments, and documentation. The data were analyzed using test and non-test analysis with data recap tables. The media used was a motion graphic video titled "Bahaya Rokok." Main Findings: The first writing test without audio-visual media showed an average score of 7.1 with only 2 students reaching the passing score. In contrast, after implementing the motion graphic video in the second test, the average score increased to 8.6 with 33 students reaching the minimum passing score. The use of the video significantly improved students’ writing skills in advertisement texts. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study introduces the use of motion graphic video as an innovative tool in language instruction, particularly in teaching advertisement texts. It offers empirical insight into how media can enhance writing engagement and outcomes, especially for texts with persuasive purposes in junior high school settings.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to describe the ability of class X students at MAN 01 Kota Bengkulu in writing anecdotal texts, particularly focusing on the structure and linguistic features of the text. Methodology: This study used a descriptive method with a quantitative approach. The population included all 317 tenth-grade students of MAN 01 Kota Bengkulu in the 2022/2023 academic year. The sample of 23 students was selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through a writing test with a rubric assessing five structural components of anecdotal texts and linguistic features. The average score formula was used for data analysis. Main Findings: The findings show that students’ ability to write anecdotal texts is generally categorized as good with an average score of 76.71. Specifically, the abstraction aspect was excellent (12.3), orientation good (14.9), crisis good (14.4), reaction excellent (12.4), coda excellent (11.4), and linguistic elements excellent (11.4). These results indicate that most students have mastered the structure and language use of anecdotal texts effectively. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study provides a focused evaluation of students’ writing based on the complete five-part structure of anecdotal texts combined with linguistic criteria. Unlike prior studies, this research offers a comprehensive assessment using a targeted rubric and highlights specific strengths and weaknesses across each structural and linguistic component, contributing to curriculum-based evaluation methods in writing instruction.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to describe the sociological aspects of literature contained in the novel Mata di Tanah Melus by Okky Madasari, its social functions, and its relevance to Indonesian language learning in Madrasah Tsanawiyah. Methodology: This study used a qualitative descriptive method. Data were collected from the novel Mata di Tanah Melus and interviews with informants including educators and students. Data collection employed content analysis and in-depth interviews. Data were validated using source and theory triangulation, and analyzed using an interactive model and literary sociology approach based on Ian Watt's theory. Main Findings: The study found socio-cultural aspects in the novel including knowledge systems, beliefs, kinship, tools and livelihood systems, and language. Social functions of the novel were reflected in positive reader responses indicating moral and educational value. The novel was also found to be relevant to Indonesian language learning, particularly in appreciation and review of literary texts aligned with the 2013 curriculum for Madrasah Tsanawiyah. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study uniquely integrates literary sociology analysis with educational application by linking the socio-cultural content of a children's fantasy novel to curriculum-based Indonesian language instruction. It provides a model for using literary texts with cultural depth in character-building education at the junior secondary level.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This classroom action research aimed to investigate whether the Know-Want-Learned (KWL) strategy could improve the reading comprehension of descriptive texts among seventh-grade junior high school students, with implications for addressing the foundational literacy skills measured by international assessments such as PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment). Methodology: Employing the Kemmis & McTaggart model over two cycles, this study collected data using pre-tests, post-tests, observation sheets, teacher interviews, and student questionnaires. Quantitative data from tests were analyzed by calculating mean scores and the percentage of students passing the Minimum Mastery Criterion (KKM), while qualitative data were analyzed thematically to assess engagement and metacognitive development. Main Findings: The implementation of the KWL strategy significantly improved student outcomes. The percentage of students passing the KKM increased from 20% in the pre-test to 40% in post-test 1, and further to 80% in post-test 2. Qualitative data indicated increased student enthusiasm, active participation, and the development of metacognitive strategies such as questioning and reflection that align with core PISA reading literacy competencies. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study provides empirical evidence from an Indonesian junior high school context, specifically linking the KWL strategy not only to improved classroom performance but also to the development of higher-order reading skills relevant to PISA frameworks. It demonstrates KWL as a practical, low-tech strategy that can help bridge the gap between daily instruction and the literacy competencies emphasized in global assessments.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to describe the forms, meanings, and semiotic functions of language in the traditional wedding discourse of the Flores culture in West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Methodology: The research uses a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through structured interviews and participatory observation, supported by documentation such as photos and field notes. Data analysis was conducted using qualitative descriptive techniques and the referential equivalence method (metode padan referensial). Main Findings: The study identified unique semiotic forms in both linguistic units (words, phrases, sentences, discourse) and non-linguistic elements (symbols, objects, participants) throughout the wedding stages. These elements carry specific cultural meanings and functions, reinforcing social bonds, cultural identity, and communication within the Manggarai Barat community. Novelty/Originality of this study: This research provides a semiotic analysis of Manggarai Barat wedding rituals using Halliday’s sociosemiotic framework, which has not been extensively applied in previous studies on Flores culture. It contributes to the preservation and linguistic documentation of local oral traditions and enriches the study of language-culture correlations in Indonesia.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to systematically identify, describe, and categorize the moral education values contained in the Javanese folktale anthology "Bandha Warisan." The analysis focuses on an in-depth exploration of the implicit and explicit ethical messages in the narrative, as well as its relevance as a source of local wisdom-based teaching materials in the context of character education in Indonesia. Methodology: This research uses descriptive qualitative analysis. Data were collected through careful reading and note-taking techniques from the “Bandha Warisan” anthology. Data validity was ensured through expert judgement (semantic validity) and reliability testing. Main Findings: The analysis identified 31 moral values, systematically categorized into four relational domains: human-God (accepting destiny, prayer, gratitude, repentance) human-others (harmony, mutual aid, respect for parents, cooperation, affection) human-environment (cleanliness, caring for animals); and human-self (honesty, humility, diligence, generosity, keeping promises). These values reflect core Javanese ethical principles such as nrimo, rukun, and andhap asor. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study provides a systematic mapping of moral values from a modern, curated Javanese folktale anthology. It bridges traditional wisdom with contemporary character education, offering a practical reference for educators and parents in using local literature for moral pedagogy. The research highlights the anthology's role as an active instrument for cultural transmission and ethical formation in the modern era.
