Abstract

The integration of the Physical Education as an outcome within the Life Orientation and Life Skills curriculum in South Africa has reduced instructional quality due to a lack of specialised educators. Within the school curriculum, it is uncertain if Physical Education plays a role in learners choosing to take part in school sport, and university sport. This lack of knowledge in understanding the importance of attitudes and perceptions toward Physical Education and school-based sports in the South African context requires further investigation, particularly regarding the impact that Physical Education has on university students' sports participation. The study entailed conducting semi-structured interviews with first-year University of Johannesburg sport students. The researchers obtained consent from athletes, conducted face-to-face semi-structured interviews, transcribed audio recordings, and employed thematic analysis using ATLAS.ti, revealing recurrent themes aligned with study goals.  The purpose of the study was to investigate the impact of Physical Education and school sport on sport participation among first year students taking part in sport at the University of Johannesburg.  The presence of well-trained Physical Education teachers, adequate facilities, equipment, and support systems positively correlates with increased participation in both school and university-level sports. This study underscores the pivotal influence of well-trained Physical Education educators, coupled with the provision of adequate facilities, equipment, and comprehensive support systems, in bolstering sport participation, encompassing both school and university contexts. This research highlights the paramount importance of these components in fostering active sports engagement among first-year students at the University of Johannesburg.

Abstract

Decreased physical activity and increased adolescent sedentary lifestyles have become global cardiovascular fitness issues. Unbalanced body composition contributes to low cardiovascular fitness and increases the risk of metabolic disorders. This study aims to analyze the relationship between body composition and physical activity on VO2max in untrained adolescents. This observational analytical study with a cross-sectional design was conducted on untrained adolescents aged 15-18. Body composition was measured using the Xiaomi Body Composition Scale S400. Physical activity levels were measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). VO2max was measured using the Multistage Fitness Test. Physical activity significantly contributed to in untrained adolescents (r=0.675; p=0.000). Total body water had the strongest positive correlation with VO2max (r=0.474;p=0.003), followed by percentage muscle mass (r=0.413;p=0.010) and bone mineral (r=0.401;p=0.013). Body Mass Index (r=-0.418;p=0.009), percentage body fat (r=-0.412;p=0.010), muscle mass (r=-0.403;p=0.012), fat-free mass (r=-0.401;p=0.012) and Basal Metabolic Rate (r=-0.401;p=0.013) showed significant negative correlation with VO2max. Increasing physical activity and improving body composition are key strategies to increase VO2max in adolescents. Interventions involving schools, families, and the community are needed to promote an active lifestyle in this population. The results of this study provide a scientific basis for the development of effective and sustainable fitness programs.

Abstract

This study explores the role of coach feedback in improving athlete performance through a bibliometric analysis approach. Coach feedback is proven to be crucial in enhancing skills, motivation, and the relationship between coaches and athletes. Using data from Scopus (2014–2024), this study maps publication trends, international collaborations, and dominant research themes related to coach feedback. The findings indicate that a combination of positive and corrective feedback is more effective, while context-based and interpersonal approaches enhance its effectiveness. Despite providing comprehensive insights, this study faces limitations in terms of language scope, database coverage, and a lack of in-depth qualitative analysis. This study serves as an important foundation for further research development on feedback in the sports domain.

This study aims to analyze the contribution of kinesthetic intelligence and self-confidence to the success of playing egrang. This study uses a quantitative method with a regression correlation design. The sample used in this study were 51 elementary school students in Semarang Regency who had filled out inform consent as a willingness to participate in the study. The data in this study were obtained using several test instruments, namely physical tests to measure kinesthetic intelligence, concentration tests using concentration exercise grids, questionnaire tests to measure self-confidence levels, and egrang playing skills tests which then the data were processed using SPSS software version 25.0. The results showed that kinesthetic intelligence and self-confidence had a significant contribution to the success of playing egrang, with a total contribution of 49.5%. Kinesthetic intelligence and self-confidence have a close relationship in supporting the success of playing egrang. Kinesthetic intelligence provides technical ability, and self-confidence strengthens the mental courage to implement it. Future research is expected to be able to analyze and identify other factors that can contribute to the success of egrang.
