Abstract

As global ecological crises increase, the role of literary studies in promoting environmental consciousness has garnered growing academic interest. Ecocriticism, a branch of literary criticism, helps learners analyze literature from the perspective of environmental issues. At Khulna University, students of the English Discipline show a strong appreciation for nature and an interest in preserving biodiversity. This study explores how ecocriticism can be used to enhance environmental awareness among these students. The aim of this study is to motivate students to engage with ecocriticism and to study literature in terms of environmental awareness. The research employed a mixed-methods approach. It included workshops, surveys, field visits, and focus group discussions. More than one hundred students and several faculty members of the English Discipline participated enthusiastically in the workshops. They watched video clips related to environmental disasters and struggles of the coastal people who are vulnerable to many environmental threats. The findings confirm a significant increase in students’ understanding of environmental issues, their enthusiasm to apply ecocritical frameworks in both academic and activist contexts, and their willingness to engage in sustainable practices. Thus, this study highlights the potential of literature as a transformative tool in promoting environmental responsibility within academic institutions.

Abstract

The fashion industry is rapidly expanding while exerting significant pressure on the environment through carbon emissions, textile waste, water pollution, and deforestation. This study investigates how environmental knowledge influences sustainable fashion behavior among forestry students at Tadulako University. A quantitative survey was conducted with 50 purposively selected students who had received basic environmental education. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression. Results show that overall environmental knowledge is positively related to sustainable fashion attitudes and behaviors, with correlation strengths ranging from weak to moderate. Multiple regression produced an R² of 0.495, indicating that the independent variables collectively explain nearly half of the variation in sustainable fashion behavior. Among the seven knowledge indicators, the ability to seek and read information on sustainable fashion (X6) emerged as the only significant predictor, strongly linked to practices such as reading garment care labels and upcycling. These findings highlight the critical role of practical, applicable knowledge in fostering sustainable fashion consumption

Abstract

This study examines the effect of integrating inquiry-based learning within the 5E-Framework on enhancing conceptual understanding and critical thinking skills in the topic of density among pre-service teachers at Bagabaga College of Education, with attention to gender differences. Using a one-group pretest–posttest design, data were collected from Level 200 pre-service teachers (N = 52) and analyzed using SPSS. Results showed no statistically significant difference in normalized gain scores between males (mean NG = -0.045) and females (mean NG = -0.044); t(50) = 0.965, p > .05, indicating the model improved conceptual understanding similarly across genders. However, significant gender differences were found in critical thinking dimensions: analysis (p = .000, η² = .221) and logic (p = .005, η² = .129), while no significant difference was observed in the evaluation dimension (p = .444, η² = .010). These findings suggest that while integrating inquiry-based learning within the 5E-Framework is effective in supporting general learning gains in science concepts such as density, differences in specific cognitive skills remain. The study recommends incorporating targeted interventions to ensure more equitable development of critical thinking across genders in science education

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Green Belt Policy in controlling urban heat and air pollution in Semarang City, with a particular focus on the role of community participation in its implementation. A mixed-method approach was applied, combining legal analysis through statute and conceptual approaches with field research. Primary data were obtained from the Public Works Department (Dinas Pekerjaan Umum) of Semarang City, providing information on the extent, maintenance, and challenges of green belt areas, and from the Environmental Agency (Dinas Lingkungan Hidup), which supplied air quality index records and urban temperature data. Additional data were gathered through literature review, direct observation, and interviews with local communities. The results indicate that although green belts contribute to reducing local air temperatures and improving air quality, their potential is not fully optimized due to limited maintenance budgets, inadequate human resources, and low public involvement. Community participation remains minimal, largely due to a lack of awareness and incentives. Strengthening regulatory enforcement, integrating community-based management, and utilizing environmental monitoring technology are recommended to enhance the policy’s impact. These findings can serve as a reference for local governments in other urban areas to adopt similar strategies for sustainable environmental management
