Abstract

In recent years, technological advancements have significantly transformed various aspects of education, including language learning. The application of virtual reality technology greatly encourages learners to have high levels of curiosity. Researchers want to develop English language learning with virtual reality, which has the advantage of students being able to explore the virtual world with conditions exactly like real life in the hospitality industry). Where learners hone their understanding of English through analyzing the virtual world.  In the context of language learning, understanding  the effectiveness and acceptance of innovative instructional approaches is crucial.   Based on the background that has been described, the problem can be formulated as follows, how effective is the application of virtual reality media in improving the English language skills of students at SMK Negeri 1 Abung Selatan. This research practically provides an overview and steps for the use and development of learning models by applying virtual reality,One such cutting-edge technology that has gained increasing attention in the field of language education is Virtual Reality This research measures the effectiveness of the application of Virtual Reality technology with quantitative research methods using an experimental approach.  The subjects in this research are 34 students majoring in Hospitality Accommodation in class XI.1 and 31 students in class XI.2 who take Hospitality English lessons. The majority of respondents feel ease and comfort in their interactions with Virtual Reality, with the advantage that students are able to explore the virtual world with conditions like real life in the hotel industry.   The application of Virtual Reality technology encourages students to have a high curiosity. Most of the students stated that learning using gamification was effective because it was related to the previous topics, fun, easy to understand, accessible, increased enthusiasm and interest for learning. It also did not spend a lot of internet data plans and time.

Abstract

This research explores the subject-verb agreement system of Pashto and English, focusing on their syntactic and morphological properties. Pashto belongs to the group of Indo-Iranian languages, characterized by a sophisticated agreement system with verbs inflected for number, person, and gender, particularly in past and future tenses. In contrast to Pashto, the English language has a simpler agreement system with minimal inflection. This study explores various approaches to grammatical agreement and their implications for language learning and theoretical linguistics by comparing the subject-verb agreement of both languages. A comparative linguistic approach was employed, utilizing a qualitative method. Data were collected from written and spoken sources in both languages, followed by systematic syntactic analysis. The findings of this study show apparent discrepancies in the agreement system of Pashto and English Languages.  Pashto has a complex agreement system involving a rich inflection for number, person, and gender, showing a loaded morphological structure. This inflectional richness of Pashto provides multifaceted information that supports accurate and clear communication. In contrast, English has a more streamlined agreement system with simpler inflection.  Moreover, the findings contribute to the knowledge of cross-linguistics variations and offer information for language education in multilingual contexts.

Abstract

This study examines the status of Indonesian local languages, emphasizing their role in identity preservation and linguistic diversity across the archipelago. Despite their cultural significance, local languages often receive less appreciation than international languages, which are perceived to have greater socioeconomic value. Current research on Indonesian local languages is limited, typically focusing on linguistic aspects in isolation. This study takes a broader approach, considering factors such as pedagogy, employability, and publicity. A mixed-method approach was used, including questionnaires, interviews, and documentary analysis to gather data from 60 high school students. The results show that, despite the absence of local language instruction, students held positive attitudes toward their local languages and actively used them outside of school. However, regarding employability, students believed that proficiency in local languages would not significantly improve their job prospects. They also recognized the importance of local language visibility in media, as it could stimulate public interest and enhance the economic value of these languages. The study highlights the need for a more comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing local language use and its potential benefits.

Abstract

Pragmatics plays a fundamental role in mediating meaning and facilitating effective communication across cultural boundaries. This narrative review aims to examine the role of pragmatic competence in intercultural communication by synthesizing theoretical and empirical evidence from diverse contexts. Literature was systematically collected from databases including Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar using keywords such as “intercultural pragmatics,” “speech acts,” and “pragmatic competence.” Studies were included based on relevance, methodological rigor, and empirical contribution, encompassing research from educational, professional, and societal settings. The results highlight five key themes: speech acts and politeness strategies, pragmatic failures and communication barriers, technology in pragmatic learning, cultural and religious pragmatics, and teacher and curriculum integration. Findings reveal that pragmatic competence is culturally contingent, with speech acts and politeness norms varying widely across societies. Pragmatic failures are shown to disrupt communication and, in high-stakes domains such as aviation and healthcare, may have critical consequences. Technology-enhanced learning, particularly through AI and gamification, demonstrates potential in fostering pragmatic competence, while culturally embedded expressions and religious idioms illustrate the importance of contextual awareness. The integration of pragmatics into teacher education and curricula emerges as essential for preparing learners to navigate intercultural interactions effectively. This review concludes that systemic reforms, policy innovations, and targeted pedagogical strategies are required to address persistent gaps in pragmatic education. Future research should examine long-term pragmatic adaptation and digital communication contexts to further advance understanding and practice. These findings emphasize the urgent need for pragmatic competence as a core dimension of intercultural communication.

Abstract

This narrative review examines cognitive approaches to morphology with a focus on the mental lexicon, exploring how morphological representation and decomposition facilitate word recognition and language processing. The review aimed to synthesize theoretical perspectives and empirical evidence to evaluate the mechanisms that govern morphological awareness and its role in literacy and communication. Literature was collected from multiple databases, including Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar, using targeted keywords and Boolean search strategies. Inclusion criteria emphasized studies addressing morphology from cognitive and psycholinguistic perspectives, incorporating experimental, neuroimaging, and review-based methodologies. Findings reveal that morphological families enhance lexical retrieval, while frequency, transparency, and productivity shape access strategies for complex words. Evidence from priming, eye-tracking, and pseudoword experiments confirms the automaticity of morphological decomposition. Bilingual and second-language processing is shown to be shaped by typological similarity, proficiency, and translanguaging practices, resulting in distinct cognitive strategies compared to monolinguals. Neuroimaging studies identify distributed cortical networks, including the left inferior frontal gyrus, supporting morphological processing. Clinical evidence from dyslexia and aphasia underscores morphology’s role in literacy and communication. Systemic and educational factors, including inequities in access and pedagogical design, contribute significantly to observed variability. The review emphasizes the urgency of addressing research gaps in underrepresented languages, age groups, and translanguaging contexts. Pedagogical interventions, such as explicit morpheme-focused instruction, gamified environments, and translanguaging practices, are recommended to strengthen literacy outcomes. Future research should integrate cross-linguistic evidence and neurocognitive approaches to develop inclusive models of morphological processing with broad theoretical and practical implications.
