This journal contains various activities of teaching staff at the Environmental Engineering Study Program, the Faculty of Engineering UPN "Veteran" Jawa Timur and other universities in dealing with and managing various potentials, obstacles, challenges, and problems that exist in society. The implementation of service activities also involves the participation of the community and partners. Focus and Scope of articles published in the journal Environation: Environmental Engineering Journal of Community Dedication based on research such as science, appropriate technology, economics, environment, and human resources in community empowerment. The Environmental Journal invites lecturers, students, and community service activists to submit manuscripts that discuss topics relevant to the focus above. The manuscript is written using an academic approach or scientific method by presenting data on the impact of community service activities that have been carried out. The publication of this journal will be carried out in one year, starting in 2022, it will be published twice, namely in April and November.

Abstract

Penggunaan minyak dalam proses masak tidak disarankan untuk digunakan berkali-kali karena berdampak negatif bagi kesehatan tubuh. Proses penggunaan minyak ini akan menghasilkan limbah berupa minyak jelantah. Pembuangan minyak jelantah ke lingkungan dapat mencemari air dan tanah. Pengolahan minyak jelantah menjadi lilin menjadi solusi yang mudah diterapkan. Lilin dapat dijadikan sebagai aromaterapi dengan pemberian essential oil. Pemberdayaan masyarakat terkait pemanfaatan minyak jelantah perlu dilakukan. Metode yang digunakan yaitu dengan memberi penyuluhan dan peragaan proses pembuatan. Kegiatan dilakukan di balai Desa Mojokumpul, Kecamatan Kemlagi, Kabupaten Mojokerto pada tanggal 20 Maret 2023. Peserta penyuluhan merupakan masyarakat desa setempat. Peserta dapat memahami proses pembuatan lilin berbahan minyak jelantah, karena alat dan bahan yang diperlukan mudah dicari dan dapat menggunakan peralatan dapur, selain itu proses pembuatannya mudah untuk diterapkan. Lilin aromaterapi yang dihasilkan dapat digunakan secara pribadi maupun menjadi ide peluang usaha bagi masyarakat, dimana usaha souvenir dapat dikembangkan dari produk lilin aromaterapi tersebut.

Abstract

Desa Kembang Belor merupakan salah satu desa di Kecamatan Pacet yang memiliki hasil panen jagung ketan ungu. Masyarakat hingga saat ini masih kurang memanfaatkan jagung ketan ungu menjadi produk pangan olahan, padahal jagung ketan ungu sendiri memiliki banyak sekali manfaat bagi kesehatan tubuh. Jagung ketan ungu mengandung antosianin, yaitu pigmen yang memberikan warna merah keunguan pada biji jagung. Antosianin merupakan antioksidan yang membantu melawan radikal bebas dalam tubuh, dapat membantu mengurangi risiko penyakit kronis seperti penyakit jantung, kanker, dan gangguan penuaan. Pengolahan jagung ketan ungu menjadi yogurt adalah salah satu contoh inovasi dalam industri pangan yang memanfaatkan bahan lokal untuk menciptakan produk baru dengan nilai tambah. Tujuan kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan penduduk dalam pengolahan jagung ketan ungu menjadi yogurt yang higenis, dan disukai konsumen serta memperkenalkan cara pengemasan dan pemasaran produk yang baik dalam menunjang pengembangan produk olahan jagung ketan ungu untuk meningkatkan pendapatan masyarakat. Metode yang dipakai adalah penyuluhan dan pelatihan tentang pengolahan yogurt jagung ketan ungu, metode pengemasan dan strategi pemasarannya.

Abstract

Area mapping is used to find out the potential that can be explored in an area. Geographically, Glagah District is located in the area of Lamongan Regency which is located in the northern hemisphere, approximately 15 Km from the capital of Lamongan district, located at coordinates between 06° 53' 30.81'' – 7° 23'6'' South Latitude and 112° 17' 01.22'' – 112° 33'12''. Glagah District has an area of 3,888 ha of agricultural land and makes agricultural products in this area quite large. Grain production in Glagah sub-district was 29,104 tons and 18,623.29 tons of rice production in 2019. The large amount of grain obtained makes the potential for processing rice husk waste a thing that needs to be considered. One way to process rice husks is by converting rice husks into burnt charcoal, considering that the silica content in rice husk ash is quite large at 87-97% of dry weight. This method is fairly easy to do and burnt husk charcoal can be used for organic fertilizer that is beneficial for plants.

Abstract

Glagah District, located in Lamongan Regency, has a lot of potential that can still be optimized, one of which is fish processing. This area produces popular fish on the market and only becomes waste if not processed, such as small fish, fish with too many spines, and fish heads. This is the main concern in processing unsold fish as one of the main raw materials in the production of fish meal. Mapping fish processing sources aims to build and maximize fish production potential. The method used is a descriptive and qualitative method with a field survey to obtain an overview of the distribution points of fish processing sources. From the results of field surveys and mapping carried out, there are 196.2456 hectares, including swamps, rivers and reservoirs, with a production scale of around 125.4635 tons. Meanwhile, the results of aquaculture include fish ponds, rice fields, ponds, floating-net-cages, and step-net-cages, which cover an area of around 4,179.48 hectares with a production scale of 12,915.9608 tons. The use of fish includes flour, pellets, crackers, presto, and fish cake, which can add selling value. This can also be a way to reduce fish and increase the village's income.

Abstract

Bromo is one of Indonesia’s premier tourist destinations, renowned for its unique biodiversity, including Edelweiss (Anaphalis javanica), a symbolic flower of mountainous ecosystems. However, increasing tourism activities and human interference have threatened the conservation of Edelweiss habitats. To address this challenge, faculty members from the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional "Veteran" Jawa Timur, in collaboration with the local community of Bromo and international universities, conducted an Edelweiss planting program on September 26, 2024. This initiative was part of the Adjunct Professor program and the International Conference on Science and Technology (ICST) 2024. The program achieved a seedling adaptation success rate of 85%, contributing to improved soil stability in the planting areas. Beyond ecological impacts, the initiative successfully raised environmental awareness and fostered active local community participation in conservation. The collaboration among academics, the local community, and international partners highlighted the importance of multi-stakeholder approaches in environmental preservation. Despite challenges such as unpredictable weather and the need for long-term monitoring, the program serves as a model for community-based conservation initiatives in other sensitive ecosystems.

Abstract

This community service program aims to provide access to non-formal education for children of irregular Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) in Tanjung Malim, Malaysia, who experience limited formal education and connection to Indonesian culture. Using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, the program includes identification of student needs, teaching of eight academic subjects, and cultural preservation through batik dyeing. The program is designed to improve students' academic skills, introduce Indonesian traditional arts, and instill national values through creative and interactive activities. Results showed an improvement in students' academic skills, learning motivation, and self-confidence. In addition, cultural preservation activities succeeded in fostering a sense of pride in Indonesian traditions. For sustainability, it is recommended to improve learning facilities, train studio managers, and develop culture-based programs. This approach has proven effective in creating social and educational impacts for the PMI community.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to enhance the technical capacity of local government officers in air pollutant dispersion modeling. The training was held on February 5–6, 2025, at the Environmental Agency of East Java Province, involving participants from the Sub-division of Air Pollution Control, within the Division of Pollution and Environmental Damage Control. The program was designed as a technical guidance on the use of the AERMOD software, developed by the U.S. EPA. The training materials covered fundamental concepts of atmospheric dispersion, required input data, model configuration, and output interpretation. The implementation method included theoretical sessions and hands-on tutorials using case studies based on real data. The results indicate a significant improvement in participants’ understanding and technical ability to apply AERMOD in assessing pollutant dispersion. This activity is expected to support evidence-based policymaking in air pollution control. Future development may include advanced training with higher spatial and temporal complexities to strengthen local capabilities.

Abstract

Hospital hazardous waste (B3) management is crucial to avoid negative impacts on health and the environment. This community engagement aimed to improve B3 waste handling capacity in a regional hospital in East Java. Activities included site observation, technical discussions, SOP development, labeling training, and digital reporting via the Festronik system. Observations revealed issues in waste labeling, characterization, and logbook documentation. Interventions successfully improved labeling according to waste properties, developed technical SOPs, and fulfilled storage requirements based on Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021 Article 419 paragraph (4). Enhancements such as emergency response tools and updated signage further supported safe and compliant waste management. This program is expected to strengthen sustainable B3 waste governance in the healthcare sector.

Abstract

Pengelolaan sampah merupakan tantangan penting di lingkungan perguruan tinggi dalam upaya mewujudkan prinsip pembangunan berkelanjutan dan zero waste campus. Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jawa Timur menghasilkan limbah organik dan anorganik yang dominan berupa sampah daun dan tiket karcis parkir yang belum dimanfaatkan secara optimal. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk mengonversi kedua jenis limbah tersebut menjadi briket sebagai energi alternatif ramah lingkungan serta meningkatkan kemampuan panitia pengabdian dalam pengolahan sampah berbasis waste-to-energy. Metode yang digunakan adalah workshop internal berbasis training by doing yang meliputi tahapan pengumpulan bahan, pencacahan, pencampuran, pencetakan, dan curing briket. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa briket yang dihasilkan memiliki bentuk fisik yang baik, menyala dengan stabil, dan berpotensi digunakan sebagai bahan bakar skala kecil. Berdasarkan evaluasi, program ini berhasil meningkatkan pemahaman teknis peserta sekaligus memberikan solusi aplikatif untuk pengurangan volume sampah di lingkungan kampus. Kegiatan ini direkomendasikan untuk dikembangkan pada skala yang lebih luas dan didukung dengan uji laboratorium guna meningkatkan kualitas briket sebagai energi terbarukan.

Abstract

Pengelolaan limbah organik di lingkungan perguruan tinggi merupakan bagian penting dalam upaya mewujudkan Green and Sustainable University. Aktivitas kantin Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jawa Timur menghasilkan timbulan limbah organik harian yang apabila tidak dikelola dengan baik berpotensi menimbulkan pencemaran lingkungan. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan meningkatkan kapasitas sivitas akademika dalam pengelolaan limbah organik melalui produksi eco-enzyme berbasis ragi sebagai inovasi percepatan proses fermentasi. Metode pelaksanaan melibatkan workshop berbasis training by doing yang mencakup edukasi konsep dan praktik langsung produksi eco-enzyme melalui tahapan pengumpulan sampah organik, pemotongan bahan, formulasi campuran fermentasi, penambahan ragi sebagai aktivator, hingga pemantauan hasil fermentasi. Evaluasi pelaksanaan dilakukan melalui observasi peningkatan kompetensi peserta dan kualitas produk eco-enzyme yang dihasilkan. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa peserta mampu menerapkan teknik produksi eco-enzyme secara mandiri, serta penambahan ragi terbukti mempercepat proses fermentasi dan meningkatkan karakteristik awal produk, meliputi aroma yang lebih stabil dan tingkat kejernihan yang lebih baik dibandingkan fermentasi konvensional.
