Abstract

The post-Reformasi introduction of PNPM marked a shift in Indonesia’s development paradigm toward community-driven approaches. PNPM positioned citizens as active agents across planning, implementation, and evaluation, and framed poverty as rooted in the weakening of moral virtues within community life. Facilitators were therefore tasked with enabling social learning and internalizing PNPM’s values among residents. This literature-based qualitative study examines how participatory development communication contributed to behavioral change and institutional sustainability after PNPM ended in 2016. The findings show that facilitators employed participatory communication characterized by egalitarian dialogue, problem-posing methods, iterative reflection and action (praxis), the development of critical consciousness, and an ethical foundation built on trust and humility. They also practiced authentic communication emphasizing honesty, openness, and compassion. The integration of these approaches—participatory authentic communication—strengthened community empowerment by fostering sincerity, care, and solidarity. These moral foundations helped sustain community institutions such as the Lembaga Keswadayaan Masyarakat (LKM), even after PNPM’s formal termination.

Abstract

Modernization and digitalization have transformed traditional rituals into digital content, raising questions about the continuity of their communicative structures. This study analyzes the transformation of the Peresean ritual on TikTok using a netnographic approach and Dell Hymes SPEAKING model. By examining 20 videos uploaded between 2024 and 2026, the study maps how ritual communication is reconfigured in digital space. The findings indicate that the elements of Setting, Participant, and Act Sequence undergo significant transformation: the ritual arena shifts from a physical community space to an algorithmic digital stage, participants expand to include active online audiences, and ritual sequences become fragmented due to short video formats. However, the elements of Norms and Key remain consistent, as sportsmanship values are reaffirmed through audience interaction in the comment section. The element of Genre also reveals variations in representation across account categories, including documentation, tourism promotion, and entertainment framing. These results demonstrate that digital modernization does not eliminate ritual meaning but reconfigures its communicative structure through symbolic adaptation and audience negotiation. The study contributes to ritual communication research by applying the SPEAKING model to analyze cultural resilience within the social media.

Abstract

Promotional strategies through social media are a crucial aspect of digital marketing communications, particularly for the batik industry facing competition in the digital era. This study aims to describe the online promotional strategy implemented by Batik Trusmi Cirebon through its Instagram handle @btbatiktrusmi throughout 2024 and to analyze the response and engagement levels of followers to published promotional content. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method. Data collection techniques included documentation and in-depth interviews. Purposive sampling was employed to obtain informants aligned with the research objectives: marketing managers, marketing staff, and Trusmi batik consumers. Data validity was tested using source triangulation to ensure the validity of the information obtained. The results showed that the promotional strategy was implemented through the use of hard-selling, educational, and branding content tailored to the productive age market segment (25 years and older). Instagram insight analysis was used to identify audience population, interests, viewing duration, and interaction levels such as likes, comments, and shares. Online data is then compared with offline sales data to identify the most potential market segments. This strategy demonstrates that optimally utilizing Instagram features can increase engagement and contribute to increased product sales. The implementation of the promotion mix on Instagram includes advertising through Meta Ads (ads awareness and ads hard selling), public relations through educational and responsive content, sales promotion through certain period promos, direct marketing through comment and direct message features, and event marketing through offline event promotions published on Instagram.

Abstract

This research critically analyzes how women's leadership is constructed, interpreted, and negotiated within a male-dominated delivery service organization. Using a qualitative case study approach, this research aims to explore how female leaders build authority, gain acceptance, and manage power dynamics in a masculine work culture. The findings of this study indicate that women's leadership is shaped by emotional-relational communication practices that emphasize empathy, listening skills, and responsibility, but is often limited by patriarchal norms that influence employe perceptions and interactions. Female leaders employ adaptive strategies such as emotional management and relational network building to maintain their professionalism and legitimacy as leaders. The results of this study also confirm that women's leadership in the masculine sector is dynamic, but still negotiated and has the potential to shape a more inclusive communication culture. This research contributes to the study of organizational communication and gender by demonstrating how empathy-based leadership can challenge traditional hierarchies and promote more equitable and human-value-oriented communication practices.

Abstract

Online multiplayer games such as Valorant provide dedicated servers for Southeast Asian players, creating spaces where individuals from different regions regularly interact and collaborate toward shared in-game objectives. Many of these players extend their interactions beyond the game through Discord, forming communities that bridge geographical and cultural boundaries. While research on online communication has grown considerably, informal multicultural communities remain understudied, particularly in the Southeast Asian context. As technology continues to evolve, the study of intercultural communication has yet to be fully expanded to the digital realm, leaving questions about how cultural adjustments unfold online largely unaddressed. This study investigates communication accommodation patterns within a small Valorant Discord community comprising Indonesian, Malaysian, and Filipino members. Drawing on netnography and Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT), data were collected through participant observation and semi-structured interviews. Analysis followed an abductive approach, combining inductive thematic coding with deductive interpretation through CAT's framework of adjustment strategies. Findings reveal that members employ a range of accommodation strategies when navigating linguistic and cultural differences in this informal digital space. English emerges as the community's primary convergence strategy, functioning as both a communicative tool and a mechanism for social inclusion. Members also develop supplementary strategies including conscious and unconscious adoption of each other's linguistic expressions and mannerisms. However, accommodation is not uniform — native language use under emotional pressure or during co-national exchanges produces moments of non-accommodation and communicative exclusion. These findings extend CAT's application to a Southeast Asian digital gaming context, contributing to understandings of intercultural communication in informal online communities.

Abstract

The demonstration at the end of August 2025 attracted public attention because a civilian died after being hit by a Brimob car. This study aims to analyze how online media, specifically Kompas.com and Detik.com, frame news regarding this incident and how the media constructs reality concerning the image of the police institution. The method used is a qualitative descriptive approach with framing analysis. Data was collected through observation techniques of news texts from the period of August 28–31, 2025. This study analyzes 6 news articles, 3 from Kompas.com and 3 from Detik.com. The results show that the two media outlets have differences in framing the event. Kompas.com focuses more on human rights issues, security policies, and shaping the image of the police as an institution facing a crisis of trust. Meanwhile, Detik.com highlights individual violations by officers as well as the process of internal disciplinary enforcement, thus portraying the Indonesian National Police (Polri) as a responsive institution that is undergoing reform. Both share similarities in giving negative assessments of officer actions and supporting resolution steps through internal police mechanisms. Reporting by Kompas.com and Detik.com not only conveys facts but also constructs social reality regarding the Polri, which influences public perception of the police institution.

Abstract

The ability of an organization to interpret ambiguous situations is an important factor in maintaining effective communication and work coordination amidst the increasingly complex dynamics of the organization. The development of the work environment, characterized bt the rapid flow of information, cross-functional interactions, and collaboration among organizational members, increases the potential for ambiguity in communication. These conditions require organizations to have interpretation mechanisms that enable each member to understand information more clearly and build a shared understanding in carrying out work activities. In this study, the sensemaking process is important as a collective effort that enables organizational members to interpret information, clarify the meaning of messages, and align their understanding of the work situation they are facing. This study aims to analyze how sensemaking occurs within the organizational culture at Prospect Institute, particularly in addressing potential communication ambiguities that arise in interactions between members and between divisions. This research uses a qualitative approach with organizational ethnography methods to gain a deep understanding of communication experiences that occur in daily work practices. Data collection was conducted thru in-depth interviews with employes who are directly involved in work activities and organizational coordination processes. The research results indicate thet the organizational culture at Prospect Institute reflects meaning-making practices supported by relatively clear coordibation patterns among the organization’s members. When information is considered ambiguous, organizational members actively seek confirmation thru discussion and direct clarification to ensure a shared understanding. This practice is also evident in the adaptation process for new members, where the organization does not allow new employes to interpret information speculatively, but rather encourages a process of joint explanation and verification to minimize potential misunderstandings. The findings of this research indicate that sensemaking not only functions as an individual interpretation process but also as an organizational cultural practice that strengthens coordination, maintains clarity of communication, and supports the formation of collective understanding in daily work activities. Practically, the results of this research contribute to the Prospect Institute by strengthening organizational communication practices based on clarification, open coordination, and shared learning among organizational members.

Abstract

Agribusiness partnerships between companies and farmers often face communication challenges that may affect the sustainability of the partnership. This study aims to analyze the implementation of participatory communication in the agribusiness partnership between PT Sukses Mantap Sejahtera (PT SMS) and sugarcane farmers in Dompu Regency. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and document analysis, and analyzed using thematic analysis with source triangulation. The findings show that participatory communication is reflected in two-way dialogue, transparency of information, relatively equal relationships, and farmers’ involvement in decision-making related to sugarcane business management. These communication practices help build trust, strengthen coordination, and support the sustainability of the partnership. The study also proposes a participatory communication model emphasizing dialogic interaction and information transparency as the foundation of company–farmer relations.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the increasing use of drone videos in tourism promotional content in Yogyakarta. This development indicates that aerial visuals are becoming increasingly dominant in digital tourism content production. This study aims to provide evidence that the trend of drone cinematography in Yogyakarta is growing, by taking a case study of Vintage Pixel production house as a representation of a production practice that consistently utilizes drone technology. This study employs a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through observation of tourism promotional videos uploaded on Vintage Pixel’s Instagram account, interviews with the director, and documentation studies of the produced works. The analysis focuses on identifying the use of drone camera movement features applied to implement specific cinematographic techniques in tourism content. The results show three main findings: the use of the dolly in feature to build focus and dramatic effect, the circle feature to emphasize objects as points of interest through circular movement, and the reveal shot feature to gradually expose the landscape. These three features are consistently used across various analyzed tourism content productions. The findings indicate that the use of drone features is not random, but structured and repetitive as part of a visual strategy. Thus, Vintage Pixel’s production practices can be understood as evidence of the strengthening trend of drone cinematography in tourism promotion in Yogyakarta.

Abstract

This study examines the construction of power and resistance in the Dressrosa Arc of the One Piece anime through qualitative content analysis and social construction theory. Popular media functions as an arena where social meanings are shaped, given meaning, and widely distributed through narratives, symbols, and visual representations. Using Michel Foucault's power theory framework, this research analyzes how power is represented through discourse, normalization, and knowledge-power relations in the Dressrosa Arc. The research method employs qualitative content analysis on 118 episodes (629-746) with systematic coding procedures based on Foucault's theoretical framework. The findings reveal that power in Dressrosa is constructed through five main categories: power discourse (WK), truth production (PK), normalization of domination (ND), knowledge-power relations (RPK), and resistance practices (PR). Visual symbols and narrative structures play a crucial role in legitimizing authoritarian power through manipulation of information, memory control, and systematic violence. The analysis demonstrates that resistance emerges through solidarity, collective action, and counter-narratives that challenge dominant power structures. This study contributes to communication science by demonstrating how popular media constructs power meanings through audiovisual texts and how audiences interpret power dynamics and resistance symbolically. The findings provide insights into media literacy, critical analysis of popular culture, and understanding of contemporary power relations.
