Abstract

Violence against women is a social issue that does not only occur in real life but is also reflected and constructed through literary works as cultural texts. From the perspective of communication studies, the novel is understood as a medium that actively produces and represents meanings about gender relations to its audience. This study examines the representation of violence experienced by the character Firdaus and her views toward men in Nawal El Saadawi's novel Woman at Point Zero. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach through library research and document analysis, this study analyzes selected excerpts categorized into two groups: excerpts depicting Firdaus's experiences of violence and excerpts reflecting her views toward men. The analysis was conducted using Stuart Hall's theory of representation through a constructionist approach encompassing the conceptual system and the language system, as well as Simone de Beauvoir's existential feminism through the concepts of The Other and immanence-transcendence. The findings reveal that Woman at Point Zero represents the violence experienced by Firdaus as a systematic and structural pattern that permeates multiple institutional domains family, marriage, personal relations, and the state perpetrated by different male figures yet consistently constructing the same knowledge: that Firdaus's subordinate position as an object is normalized across all layers of society. This cross-institutional accumulation of violence drives Firdaus's existential journey from immanence as a passive The Other toward transcendence as a critically conscious subject, manifesting in six progressive dimensions of her views toward men from existential anger to total structural rejection of the patriarchal system.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has significantly transformed media consumption patterns, particularly among Generation Z, who increasingly access information through various digital platforms. This shift requires public broadcasting institutions to adapt in order to remain relevant and capable of reaching younger audiences. This study aims to analyze the media convergence strategy implemented by Radio Republik Indonesia Yogyakarta in reaching Generation Z. The research employs a qualitative approach using a case study method, with data collected through interviews and document analysis. The analytical framework of this study is based on the media convergence theory proposed by Henry Jenkins. The findings indicate that RRI Yogyakarta integrates traditional radio broadcasting with several digital platforms, including RRI Digital, YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, in order to expand its reach among younger audiences and adapt to changing media consumption patterns. However, the implementation of this strategy still faces several challenges, particularly the dominance of social media algorithms in determining content distribution and visibility.

The analysis focuses on the strategies used in digital communication, content production and management, audience interaction, as well as challenges faced in implementing Cyber PR. The results show that Museum Sandi actively utilizes digital platforms, particularly Instagram and TikTok, to disseminate educational information about cryptography history and museum activities. The museum also implements thematic content such as “Selasa Sejarah” and “Kamis Syber” to maintain consistency in communication. Digital communication activities are managed by a small internal team responsible for content creation and interaction with audiences. The use of social media has contributed to increasing public awareness and attracting visitors, as many visitors report learning about the museum through digital platforms. However, challenges remain, including limited human resources and uneven internal understanding of digital communication practices.

Abstract

This research examines communication practices in community-based organisations to increase women's and family health social capital through food diversification in rural communities, especially in Madura, Indonesia. The analysis focuses on the role of traditional women’s networks in communication for development approaches and on how they are increasingly harvested for specific purposes and integrated into institutions through various digital platforms, such as WhatsApp groups. This hybridisation enables collective learning, increases nutritional awareness and assists in negotiating household food decisions within a patriarchal cultural milieu. The data, surveys and interviews were recorded in Sumenep and Pamekasan. Results indicate that while women maintain strong social networks and relationships in their communities, they typically lack formal authority over household food expenditures. By transmitting information and fostering a sense of togetherness, digital community communication empowers women to reach out to their peers. As a result, women are able to champion local foods such as corn, tubers and traditional spices as desirable nutritious substitutes for rice. This study integrates participatory communication (Middleton) and persuasive communication (Yale Model) lines of research to propose a community-centred digital communication platform framework. This framework leverages social capital to facilitate gendered agency in rural development. The study offers an innovative perspective by framing “digitalised social capital” not merely as technology adoption but as a hybrid communication system that disrupts collective norms and household food management. This study contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) as localised digital communication interwoven within women’s community networks can improve food security resilience and gender-inclusive development for rural South & Southeast Asian communities.

Abstract

This study reconceptualizes public relations (PR) as practice by analyzing how communicative processes in Lasem, Indonesia are embedded in community-based heritage preservation, operating as enacted, relational, and activist practices rather than as representational and campaign-oriented functions. It explores how prefigurative practices and affective digital mobilization sustain heritage while strengthening Lasem’s reputation as a heritage city (Kota Pusaka). Using a qualitative case study, data were collected through interviews with community actors, academics, media activist, tourism entrepreneurs, young digital communicators and visitors, complemented by participant observation and digital content analysis. Findings show that heritage communication operates through embodied enactment, narrative legitimacy, affective circulation, and micropolitical negotiation. Communication is embedded in everyday practice rather than promotional strategy. Prefigurative practices generate authenticity and symbolic legitimacy, while tourists amplify narratives through digital storytelling, forming affective publics that enhance visibility and credibility. This study extends activist PR beyond campaigns, integrates prefiguration into communication theory, and highlights affective publics in shaping place-based reputation.

Abstract

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into digital platforms has transformed the way social media content is produced and managed. For Generation Z, particularly university students, use of AI has become part of everyday communication practices that not only offer efficiency but also raise questions about authenticity and ethics in self-representation. This study aims to analyze how Generation Z students negotiate the use of AI in social media practices, particularly in the context of self-presentation. This research employs an interpretive qualitative approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews with seven communication studies students who actively use social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. Data analysis was conducted using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman. Results show that students actively use technology, including AI tools such as ChatGPT and editing applications like CapCut and Canva, in the content production process. However, AI is not used comprehensively; rather, it is selective, mainly to assist with idea development and caption writing. Students still maintain control over personal aspects to preserve the authenticity of their identities. The main findings indicate a negotiation between efficiency and authenticity in self-presentation practices. Although AI provides convenience in content production, students set boundaries when using technology to maintain authenticity and credibility with their audience. Additionally, these practices are influenced by ethical considerations, including the values of honesty (sidq), intention (niyyah), and caution against excessive self-display (riya’) on social media. This study contributes to the field of digital communication by demonstrating that the use of AI in social media practices is not deterministic but rather a process of negotiation involving technological, social, and ethical dimensions. These findings also enrich the literature by offering a contextual perspective on Generation Z in Indonesia, helping to understand the dynamics of self-presentation in the era of Artificial Intelligence.

Abstract

The expansion of digital media has intensified the spread of misinformation, speculative narratives, and online deception. In this environment, the absence of verification often leads to reputational harm, financial scams, and the rapid spread of misleading information. This paper explores the Islamic principle of tabayyun—verification before accepting or disseminating information, as an ethical framework for responsible digital communication. Drawing upon Qur’anic guidance in Surah al-Hujurat (49:6), the study situates tabayyun within Islamic communication ethics emphasizing trust (amanah), justice (‘adl), and the protection of human dignity. The discussion examines how digital virality, clickbait culture, and online scams exploit the lack of user verification. While cases such as viral social media controversies illustrate the phenomenon, the paper extends the discussion to broader issues of digital misinformation and deception. It argues that tabayyun offers both a moral and practical framework for navigating contemporary information ecosystems by promoting critical verification, ethical restraint, and responsible sharing practices. Ultimately, the study highlights how Islamic ethical principles can contribute to global conversations on digital media responsibility, misinformation management, and the preservation of social trust in networked societies.
