Abstract

Maternal mortality remains a significant public health issue in Indonesia, with pregnancy complications such as anemia, hypertension, and inadequate antenatal care (ANC) contributing to adverse maternal outcomes. Husband involvement has been recognized as an important social determinant influencing maternal health behaviors; however, empirical evidence regarding the extent and determinants of spousal support during pregnancy, particularly in urban settings, remains limited. This study aimed to examine pregnant women's perceptions of their husbands' support and to identify factors associated with supportive behaviors. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 104 pregnant women attending routine ANC services at seven Community Health Centers in Bandung City. Participants were recruited using accidental sampling over three months. Data were collected using a validated, structured questionnaire assessing four domains of husband support: emotional, informational, institutional, and achievement-related. Descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed to identify factors associated with positive husband support. The results showed that 75.9% of respondents perceived their husbands' overall support as inadequate. Institutional support was the most frequently reported domain, while emotional support was the least practiced. The most commonly perceived supportive behavior was husbands listening to their wives' concerns, whereas joint physical exercise during pregnancy was reported least frequently. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that husbands aged ≥35 years and wives with lower educational attainment were significantly associated with higher perceived support from husbands. In conclusion, husband involvement during pregnancy remains suboptimal, particularly in emotional and preventive behavioral domains. These findings highlight the need for structured, couple-focused interventions within ANC services that actively engage husbands, address socio-demographic determinants, and promote comprehensive support to improve maternal health behaviors in urban settings.

Abstract

The increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in urban populations reflects the complex interaction of sociodemographic, behavioral, genetic, and environmental factors. Rapid urbanization has contributed to lifestyle changes, including increased consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs), which may increase the risk of T2DM. This study aimed to identify factors associated with T2DM among adults aged 30-65 years in urban areas. An observational analytic study with an unmatched case-control design was conducted among 152 respondents, consisting of 76 cases and 76 controls, selected from four primary healthcare centers implementing the Free Health Check Program (Cek Kesehatan Gratis/CKG) in Denpasar City. Data were collected through structured interviews and medical record verification. Variables analyzed included age, sex, UPF consumption, physical activity, family history of diabetes mellitus, and socioeconomic status (SES). Data were analyzed using simple and multiple logistic regression to estimate adjusted odds ratios (AORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The multivariable analysis showed that age, sex, UPF consumption, physical activity, and family history of diabetes mellitus were independently associated with T2DM and compared with participants aged 30-44 years, those aged 45-54 years had higher odds of T2DM (AOR = 4.399; 95% CI: 1.508-12.827), while those aged 55-65 years also had increased odds (AOR = 2.369; 95% CI: 0.704-7.970). Male participants had higher odds of T2DM than female participants (AOR = 3.533; 95% CI: 1.438-8.678). Frequent UPF consumption was strongly associated with T2DM (AOR = 5.408; 95% CI: 2.162-13.527), as was family history of diabetes mellitus (AOR = 6.108; 95% CI: 2.592-14.393). Low physical activity was also associated with higher odds of T2DM compared with high physical activity (AOR = 4.188; 95% CI: 1.257-13.954), whereas socioeconomic status was not significantly associated with T2DM. In conclusion, age, sex, frequent UPF consumption, low physical activity, and family history of diabetes mellitus were independently associated with T2DM among adults aged 30-65 years in urban areas. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening nutrition education, promoting physical activity, and prioritizing early diabetes screening among high-risk groups.

Abstract

Cholesterol is an essential lipid in the body; however, excessive levels may lead to hypercholesterolemia and increase the risk of coronary heart disease. Natural alternatives such as red ginger extract (Zingiber officinale var. rubrum) have potential due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to evaluate the effect and determine the optimal dose of red ginger extract in reducing total cholesterol levels. A laboratory experimental study with a pre-test and post-test control group design was conducted using 30 male mice (Mus musculus), which were randomly divided into five groups (three treatment groups and two control groups). The treatment groups received different doses of red ginger ethanol extract. The results showed that administration of red ginger extract reduced total cholesterol levels in mice, with mean total cholesterol level decreased from 163.57 mg/dL to 131.87 mg/dL. Statistical analysis indicated a significant reduction in cholesterol levels, and differences were observed among treatment groups. The highest dose (18 mg/kg body weight) demonstrated the most optimal effect. In conclusion, red ginger ethanol extract effectively reduces total cholesterol levels in mice, with higher doses showing greater efficacy.

Abstract

Uncontrolled hypertension remains a major public health concern because it increases the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, particularly in low- and middle-income settings. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of uncontrolled hypertension and identify factors associated with poor blood pressure control among adults with diagnosed hypertension receiving follow-up care in Rasau Jaya Village, Kubu Raya Regency, Indonesia. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 252 adult patients with diagnosed hypertension. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and medical record review, and blood pressure was measured using standardized procedures. Uncontrolled hypertension was defined as systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mmHg. Bivariate analyses and multivariable regression were performed to identify factors associated with uncontrolled hypertension. The prevalence of uncontrolled hypertension was 59.5%. In multivariable analysis, family history of hypertension and hypertension duration of five years or longer remained significantly associated with uncontrolled blood pressure. Participants with a family history of hypertension had a higher likelihood of uncontrolled hypertension (APR = 2.34; 95% CI: 1.36-4.04). Similarly, participants with a hypertension duration of five years or longer were more likely to have uncontrolled blood pressure (APR = 2.18; 95% CI: 1.23-3.86). These findings indicate that uncontrolled hypertension is common among patients receiving follow-up care in this setting. Family history of hypertension and longer disease duration were key determinants of poor blood pressure control. Strengthening routine blood pressure monitoring are essential to improve hypertension control and reduce cardiovascular risk.
