Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia due to impaired insulin secretion or action. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Etlingera hemisphaerica fruit extract on reducing blood glucose levels in male Swiss Webster Mus musculus induced with 10% sugar solution. This experimental research employed a completely randomized design. A total of 25 male Mus musculus were divided into five groups: a negative control group (no treatment) and four treatment groups receiving Etlingera hemisphaerica fruit extract at doses of 0.13 mg/kgBW, 0.26 mg/kgBW, 0.38 mg/kgBW, and Glibenclamide. Blood glucose levels were measured using a glucometer before and after 17 days of treatment. The results showed that the administration of Etlingera hemisphaerica fruit extract significantly reduced blood glucose levels in the treatment groups compared to the positive control group (p<0.05). The dose of 0.13 mg/kgBW exhibited the most optimal blood glucose-lowering effect. This hypoglycemic effect is associated with the flavonoid content in the fruit extract, which enhances insulin sensitivity and reduces oxidative stress.

Abstract

Local seafood-based snacks have gained increasing popularity in Indonesia, yet their quality and safety assessments remain limited. Kupang krispi, a deep-fried mussel-based product produced by UD. Bunda Foods, represents a novel snack innovation that necessitates standardized evaluation. This study aimed to assess the sensory quality and microbiological safety of kupang krispi based on the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) 8272:2016. A descriptive quantitative approach was applied using two main analyses: sensory testing and total plate count (TPC). Sensory evaluation was conducted on two variants—Original and Spicy—covering attributes of color, aroma, texture, and taste using a 9-point hedonic scale by semi-trained panelists. Results indicated that both variants failed to meet the minimum sensory quality thresholds, with aroma receiving the lowest scores. The Spicy variant showed a marginally higher taste score (mean = 6.1) compared to Original (mean = 5.8), but both remained below the acceptable level of 7. Microbiological analysis showed TPC values ranging from 3.7×10³ to 4.5×10³ CFU/g, well below the maximum limit of 1×10⁵ CFU/g as set by the standard, indicating that the products are microbiologically safe for consumption. In conclusion, while the product is microbiologically compliant, sensory improvements are necessary through recipe reformulation and process enhancement.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the potential of Etlingera hemisphaerica leaf and flower extracts against the inhibition zone of Salmonella typhi. The study was conducted experimentally using a post-test only control group design. Torch ginger leaf and flower extracts were prepared with varying doses of 70 grams, 80 grams, 90 grams, and 100 grams, with chloramphenicol as a positive control. Antibacterial tests were conducted using disc diffusion method paper on Nutrient agar media, and the diameter of the inhibition zone was measured using a caliper. Data analysis was performed using the non-parametric Kruskal–Wallis test because the data were not normally distributed and not homogeneous, and continued with the Mann–Whitney test. The results of the Kruskal–Wallis test showed an Asymp.Sig value of 0.000 <0.05, which means there were significant differences between treatments. Doses of 90 grams and 100 grams produced moderate inhibition and indicated antibacterial effectiveness. This shows that the essence of Etlingera hemisphaerica leaves and flowers is effective in inhibiting the growth of Salmonella typhi and can be used as an alternative based on local wisdom.

Abstract

The Arecaceae family is a group of monocotyledonous plants with significant ecological and economic value, widely used by communities in tropical regions, including North Sumatra. This study aimed to explore, identify, and describe the utilization of Arecaceae species by the local community in the Durin Serugun Forest, Sibolangit District, Deli Serdang Regency. The research was conducted from April to June 2025 using an exploratory method with purposive sampling, direct morphological observation, and semi-structured interviews. Data were collected through three forest tracking routes and analyzed descriptively. The study identified 17 Arecaceae species from 10 genera, dominated by the genus Calamus. Morphological characteristics were observed based on stem, leaf, tendril, flower, and fruit structures. These species were found growing in diverse habitats ranging from rocky slopes to moist areas under tropical forest canopies. The Karo ethnic community utilizes these plants for food, building materials, traditional medicine, and ritual purposes. Plant parts used include stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits. This study provides essential information for documenting local biodiversity and serves as a foundation for conservation efforts and the sustainable use of plant resources, particularly Arecaceae species in North Sumatra.

Abstract

Land conversion in Dompu Regency is increasingly rapid due to the high demand for corn. Many studies have shown that land conversion not only results in a decrease in the number of species but also changes the structure and composition of insect communities. The purpose of this study was to analyze the diversity, correlation of diversity with abiotic factors and distribution patterns of aerial and ground insects found in agricultural land. The study was conducted in four locations: corn fields, rice fields, sacha inchi fields, and intercropping fields. The research method used was a quantitative exploration method that combines active and passive observations including VES, Sweeping nets, Pitfall traps, and yellow traps. The results of insect identification at the four research locations found 8 orders with 34 species divided into 4.37% decomposers, 17.27% pollinators, 31.59% predators, and 46.77% pests. The highest diversity was found in corn fields with an index of 3.06, followed by rice fields with 3.04, sacha inchi fields with an index of 3.007, and the lowest in intercropping fields with an index value of 2.96. The results of the Pearson correlation analysis found that humidity has a positive influence on species diversity and evenness, but is negatively correlated with dominance.
