Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the deviations in moral values depicted in the Rama Bargawa puppet play through a sociology of literature approach. The Rama Bargawa play was chosen because of its complexity in depicting the social and moral dynamics of society, especially related to the deviations committed by its characters. This study uses a qualitative description method with an embedded and case study research strategy, which focuses on the analysis of the puppeteer's dialogue in the Rama Bargawa play sourced from a YouTube video. The results of the study show that the Rama Bargawa play contains various deviations in moral values, such as infidelity, unwillingness to take responsibility, broken promises, anger, and murder. These deviations not only reflect individual conflicts, but also broader social and cultural conditions. Through a sociology of literature analysis, it is revealed that the immoral actions committed by the characters in the Rama Bargawa play, who are in fact educated and respected people, are a reflection of the dynamics of power, injustice, and norms that apply in society at that time. This study concludes that the play Rama Bargawa functions as a mirror that reflects social and cultural realities, and how deviations in moral values can be a representation of broader problems in a social context. A sociological analysis of literature on this play provides a deeper understanding of how literary works can be used to criticize and reflect on the conditions of society.

Abstract

This research was conducted with the opinion that literary works in the form of novels are a reflection of life described through the experiences of the characters in the story. This research aims to analyze the personality structure of the character Kasminta in the novel with the title Donyane Wong Culika by Suparto Brata. The approach used in the research is literary psychology with Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis theory, especially the personality structure. the data source of this research is a modern Javanese-language novel with the title Donyane Wong Culika by Suparto Brata published in 2004, with dialog or narrative quotes as the main data. The result of this research is the discovery of Freud's three types of personality structure in Kasminta's character, namely 1) Id which rejects discomfort; 2) Ego in the form of decision making based on Id's encouragement; 3) Superego in the form of two subsystems of Superego itself, namely conscience in the form of awareness of mistakes made in the past and ego ideal that can distinguish good and bad behavior.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the dynamics of socio-cultural change in the implementation of the Tedhak Siten tradition as a form of interaction between local cultural heritage and modernity. Tedhak Siten, as one of the important rituals in the life cycle of Javanese society, has undergone a transformation both in form, meaning, and method of implementation along with the times. The main focus of this research is to identify the forms of socio-cultural changes that occur in the Tedhak Siten tradition, as well as the Javanese community's response to the phenomenon. The method used is a literature study approach with secondary data analysis from journals, scientific articles, and socio-cultural theories. The results concluded that modernization does not completely erode traditional values, but rather encourages the adaptation of forms and reinterpretation of traditions to remain relevant in the midst of modern life. Thus, the preservation of local culture requires a contextual approach that is responsive to social change.

Abstract

Local traditions often contain inherited prohibitions that carry cultural and spiritual meanings. One such tradition in Babatan Village, Diwek Subdistrict, Jombang Regency, is the prohibition against striking the gong during ceremonial events. This study aims to explore the ongoing existence and public perception of this prohibition in the context of increasing global influence. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the researcher conducted observations and interviews with local residents across generations. The findings reveal that older community members still hold strongly to the belief that the gong should not be struck, associating it with ancestral respect and mystical consequences. In contrast, younger generations tend to interpret the rule more rationally, yet continue to honor it as part of cultural heritage. These results indicate that local customs have not been completely eroded by modernity, but instead are undergoing a negotiation of meaning as society evolves.

Abstract

The Kirab Pusaka tradition in Trenggalek Regency is an annual event rich in symbolism and local cultural values, yet it remains underexplored as an educational medium for younger generations. This study aims to reveal the symbolic meanings of heirloom objects and ceremonial elements, and to analyze the role of symbols in shaping cultural identity and youth character. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, using observation, interviews, and documentation for data collection. The findings indicate that symbols in the procession function not only as cultural artifacts but also as tools for internalizing noble values such as responsibility, togetherness, and pride in local identity. These symbols play a strategic role in sustaining cultural continuity and building character through tradition-based educational approaches.

Abstract

The culinary traditions of Tajin Sora and Sappar in Probolinggo are a cultural heritage rich in symbolic, spiritual, and social values. These traditions are often viewed as mere annual rituals without deep meaning, yet they contain philosophies that represent local cultural identity. This study aims to uncover the symbolic, philosophical, and historical meanings of Tajin Sora and Sappar as cultural expressions of the Probolinggo community. The method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques such as observation, interviews, and literature studies, and uses approaches from literary gastronomy and food semiotics. The results show that each element of the food, such as color, ingredients, and shape, symbolizes the values of life, purity, fertility, and hope. White porridge symbolizes purity, Candil porridge symbolizes the seeds of life, while coconut milk and pandan leaves represent harmony and protection. In addition to symbolic values, these traditions also contain social values of togetherness and solidarity. The conclusion of this study shows that Tajin Sora and Sappar are not only part of culinary practices but also serve as a medium for inheriting cultural values that are important to preserve amidst the challenges of modernization.
