Abstract

Falls in the elderly are a leading cause of serious injury, which can significantly impact quality of life. Therefore, health education regarding emergency measures is crucial to improve the preparedness of the elderly and their surrounding communities in dealing with such situations. Given the high rate of falls in the elderly, various studies indicate that approximately one-quarter to one-third of elderly people in the community experience at least one fall per year, and this figure can exceed one-third in the very elderly, making falls a significant public health issue. This community service activity aimed to provide basic understanding and skills regarding fall management in the elderly through an interactive lecture. Fifty elderly participants participated in the activity and a three-person implementation team with clearly defined roles. Evaluation results indicated an increase in participants' understanding of appropriate emergency steps after a fall, as well as the creation of effective communication between participants and the presenters. This activity had a positive impact in increasing awareness and knowledge of the elderly regarding the importance of prompt and appropriate fall management. Continuing health education and practical training are recommended as follow-up measures to strengthen the capacity of the elderly to respond to emergencies.

Abstract

Hypertension is an increase in blood pressure that causes persistent symptoms in target organs, such as: Stroke, coronary heart disease in blood vessels and heart muscle. It is estimated that cases of hypertension will increase by 80% by 2025, especially in developing countries, from 639 million cases in 2000 to 1.15 billion cases in 2025. Treatment of hypertension is generally done with medical drugs, but the use of medicinal plants as complementary therapy is increasingly in demand. The goal of this Community Service Program is to educate and empower the community to actively participate in managing their health, particularly in controlling blood pressure by utilizing existing natural resources and reducing dependence on chemical medications. This activity was conducted through outreach, discussions, and pre- and post-tests on 35 community members. This community service activity was held on Thursday, November 13, 2025 at the homes of residents of Dusun II, Desa Sei Kamah II, Kecamatan Sei Dadap, Kabupaten Asahan. The implementation of PkM activities showed that there was an increase in the knowledge of PkM participants about herbal plants for controlling blood pressure in the Sei Kamah II Village community, where before the education, community knowledge was in the poor category, namely 27 people (77.1%), and the good category was 8 people (22.7%). After the education, there was an increase in the knowledge of PkM participants, namely the good category of 33 people (94.3%) and the poor category of 2 people (5.7%).

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the major health problems among the elderly and often goes unnoticed due to the lack of apparent symptoms. Limited routine blood pressure monitoring and low health awareness contribute to an increased risk of complications in older adults. This community service program aimed to improve health awareness among the elderly through health assistance and blood pressure screening at an elderly integrated health post (Posyandu Lansia). The program employed a promotive and preventive approach by conducting individual blood pressure measurements, health assistance, and health education related to hypertension and healthy lifestyle practices. The activity involved 30 elderly participants registered at the Posyandu. The results showed that 40% of the participants were classified as hypertensive, 33% as pre-hypertensive, and 27% had normal blood pressure levels. Evaluation of participants’ understanding indicated that approximately 80% of the elderly were able to comprehend the educational materials provided. In addition, the level of participation and enthusiasm during the activities was high. This program had a positive impact on increasing awareness of the importance of regular blood pressure monitoring and self-management of health among the elderly. Therefore, health assistance through Posyandu Lansia can be an effective strategy for early detection and prevention of hypertension in the elderly.

Abstract

The main complaint that often occurs in asthma sufferers is shortness of breath, shortness of breath occurs due to narrowing of the airways due to hyperreactivity of the airways which can cause bronchospasm, persistent inflammatory cell infiltration, mucosal edema and thick mucus hypersecretion. This community service was carried out by providing counseling to 20 asthma patients for one day with a duration of 30 minutes. After the administration of alternate nostril breathing, there was a decrease in the degree of shortness of breath in all participants. This alternate nostril breathing intervention is effective in preventing bronchial asthma recurrence and is recommended as an adjunct to pharmacological intervention.

Abstract

Teenagers are particularly susceptible to psychological stress, which can affect physiological problems like low hemoglobin (Hb) levels. Adolescents who experience unmanaged stress may experience worsening health and a higher risk of anemia. The purpose of this community service project is to evaluate how well instructional snakes and ladders media may lower stress levels and raise hemoglobin levels in teenagers. Thirty teenagers aged 15-17 years were subjected to an educational-participatory approach using a pretest-posttest strategy. For four weeks, the intervention was implemented using a modified version of the snakes and ladders game that included resources on stress reduction, healthy eating, and preventing anemia. An adolescent stress scale questionnaire was used to gauge stress levels, and a digital hemoglobinometer was used to assess hemoglobin levels both before and after the intervention. The activity's findings demonstrated that adolescents' average stress scores significantly decreased following the intervention, while their average hemoglobin levels increased. Teenagers' active involvement in the game also improved their comprehension of stress management and the significance of iron consumption. The instructional snakes and ladders medium has been shown to be a creative, entertaining, and successful method for promoting teenagers' physical and mental well-being.

Abstract

One important measure of the quality of hospital services is patient safety. The efficiency of communication during the nurses' handover procedure is one element affecting patient safety. Misinformation can result from unstructured communication, which affects patient safety. Therefore, by using Mini SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation), efforts must be made to increase nurses' proficiency in systematic communication. The purpose of this community service project is to enhance nurses' comprehension and proficiency in using Mini SBAR in the inpatient ward handover procedure. Training through counseling, demonstrations, and simulations of the usage of Mini SBAR in handover was the approach employed in this exercise. 56 nurses who worked in inpatient wards across four hospitals participated in the activity. After the training, participants' abilities were observed and their knowledge was measured as part of the evaluation process. The activity's outcomes demonstrated an improvement in nurses' comprehension and proficiency with Mini SBAR handover communication. Participants were able to communicate patient information in a more organized, methodical, and unambiguous manner, which reduced nurses' communication errors. Patient safety in inpatient wards has increased as a result of this training's successful improvement of clinical communication quality.

Abstract

The high density of occupancy in Islamic boarding schools and limited hygiene facilities often lead to high rates of skin disease transmission, particularly scabies. The purpose of this community service program is to increase knowledge and change the behavior of students through Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) Education as an effort to prevent scabies at the Bina Ulama Kisaran Islamic Boarding School. The activity was attended by 79 students and was implemented through the stages of survey, preparation, intervention, and monitoring and evaluation. The intervention was carried out using an interactive lecture method using PowerPoint presentations and posters, followed by a prevention simulation. Evaluation was measured using pre-test and post-test questionnaires and post-activity behavioral observations. The results of the community service program showed a significant increase in students' knowledge, with the overall average score increasing from 49% (pre-test) to 87% (post-test). Students also began implementing a zero-sharing policy and routinely drying mattresses. As a curative follow-up, students with symptoms were given 5% Permethrin cream. Conclusion: Visual media-based education has proven effective in improving cognitive aspects and triggering initial behavioral changes in students. The program's sustainability is supported by the commitment of caregivers through the planned formation of a health cadre for the Islamic boarding school.
