Abstract

In the rapidly evolving educational domain, where artificial intelligence (AI) is pivotal, English Language Teaching (ELT) witnesses profound transformations. This study, focusing on integrating ChatGPT, an AI-driven language model, illuminates its substantial impact on the dynamics between teachers and students within ELT. Pertinent to this research is the inquiry into how ChatGPT reshapes teacher roles, responsibilities, and pedagogical practices, an area previously overlooked in the realm of AI in education. Employing a theoretical lens, the study scrutinises active learning models, technology integration theories, and paradigms of teacher professional development. Such analysis is crucial in comprehending teachers' shift from traditional methodologies to more facilitative and supportive roles, emphasising the urgency of this investigation for active learning's progression. Utilising diverse analytical approaches, ChatGPT propels pedagogies encouraging active learning, notably blended, collaborative, and project-based learning, while accentuating the necessity of professional development and institutional support for teachers' successful transition to these novel roles. These findings offer pivotal insights for the higher education sector, underlining the imperative of embracing AI's transformative potential, particularly tools like ChatGPT. By delving into ChatGPT's influence on teacher-student interaction and pedagogical methods, the study carves a significant path for future exploration and application in technology-enhanced ELT.

Abstract

Since China joined the Internet in the late 1980s, production and consumption of online cultural merchandise has been proliferating and permeating every section of society, exemplified by Internet literature, animation, comic and game. Meanwhile, there has emerged a veritable kaleidoscope of memes in China’s cyberspace, which are deployed on social media platforms to convey stances, emotions, humorousness, etc. Nonetheless, as a multi-faceted phenomenon, Internet memes fail to attain deserved academic scrutiny, so in this paper, I investigate one subcategory of memes in China’s cyberspace, viz. cultural memes, focusing on image macros that dynamically integrate visual effects and textual information. The text of cultural image macros can be generated via Chinese-English code-switching in the form of alphabetic words that are either idiomatic or related to Internet buzzwords. Alternatively, cultural image macros in China can be generated via homonymy: the vast majority of homonyms are homophones, while a small proportion of them are homographs. The corresponding images in the memes pertain to the inserted English words or constituents that are substituted, thereby complementing the text and strengthening humorous effects.

Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyze the tragic revelation of the transgender in an anonymous short story entitled “The Man Who Thought Himself a Woman.” The analysis is supported by the concepts of transgender and cross-dressing since the male main character who has a wife and two daughters gradually becomes a transgender preceded by becoming a secret cross-dresser. The library research method is used to collect the relevant data while the qualitative research method is used in the general analysis. The literary analysis is supported by textual research method focusing on character, conflict, and setting, and contextual research method focusing on the concepts of transgender and cross-dressing. The result shows that becoming transgender is a difficult process and needs much bravery. Since the main male character feels unable to face the consequence as a transgender, he starts by becoming a cross-dresser in secret at night for a couple of hours at the house basement. When he finally wants to declare in public about his coming out in a full female clothes, he prefers to present it as his last performance in his well-arranged death.

Abstract

The research probed the cross-cultural adaptation of international students who participated in the Darmasiswa program in Indonesia. They have various cultural backgrounds; they lived in Java and interacted with Javanese cultures. The Darmasiswa students’ varied experiences brought particular attention to their competence to adapt to a host country. This study aims to discover how Darmasiswa students overcome the assimilation process, embrace the psychological elements of intercultural communication, and how they handle the adaptation process. It also seeks to discover the efforts to make this program successful and recognise how the participants deal with the challenges of adapting to the local culture. This study used a descriptive qualitative method and employed an in-depth interview to approach the research participants. The participants came from Myanmar, Japan, Singapore, India, Hungaria, Timor Leste, and Thailand. They joined the Darmasiswa program in 2019 to study and learn bahasa Indonesia, the arts, and the cultures. They studied at four universities in Semarang for one year in Central Java Province, Indonesia. Findings showed that the Darmasiswa students’ adaptation and interaction processes were varied. The culture shock experienced by the students were influenced by their family value from their home countries. Internal and external factors played an essential role in influencing the success of the Darmasiswa students’ adaptation. The factors include; communication system, symbolic interaction, social life, personal mindset, the host society's motivation, and the Darmasiswa students’ involvement with the host country’s cultural activities. Those factors affected the students' adaptation levels and learning achievement in the program.

Abstract

This study looked at the experience of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) pre-service teachers handling reticent students during their teaching practicum. Reticent students are characterized by reluctance or hesitance to participate or engage in classroom discussions and activities actively. Teaching practicum is a hands-on educational experience that allows pre-service teachers to apply classroom theories and teaching strategies in real-world settings, fostering their professional growth under the guidance of experienced educators. Previous studies have explored teacher perceptions and strategies for addressing student reticence, but less attention has been given to pre-service teachers' experiences. The study employs a qualitative research design, conducting semi-structured interviews with five pre-service teachers who have completed their teaching practicum. The interviews explore the participants' experience focusing on the challenges and strategies in handling reticent students. The findings revealed common challenges faced by the participants and the strategies employed to handle reticent students. Based on the findings, recommendations are made for teacher education programs and mentor teachers to better prepare pre-service teachers in handling reticent students. Finally, the study implied some limitations and provided recommendations for future research.

Abstract

The Accused (1988), a movie adaptation of a real-life event about a gang-raped victim who seeks justice, depicts sexist behavior towards the survivor during the trial. With the main premise of seeking justice for a rape survivor, this movie highlights Sarah’s experience to gain justice through a sexist masculine institution. Referring to the theory of sexism by Manne, this article aims to show how this movie shows sexist behavior toward the survivor during law enforcement. Dialogues that show sexism between characters are used in the analysis of the movie's plot, then used to discuss the portrayal of sexism in The Accused from a feminist point of view. From the dialog and the portrayal of layered sexism, we find that as a movie promoting human rights, The Accused still implies that a woman who does not meet the expected gender roles is undeserving of justice. As a result, a ‘bad’ woman as a victim whose experience is reduced is seen as a norm.

Abstract

Through the study of Virtual Linguistic Landscape (LLV), this descriptive qualitative research aims to explore the contestation of Indonesian language in a virtual multilingual space with Indonesian people as the majority, namely the r/Indonesia subreddit community, within a social media site dominated by English speakers, Reddit. Each of the top-down contents made by the community moderators and bottom-ups made by the community members is observed. The analysis consists of the identification of the language dominance as well as the informational and symbolic functions behind the use of the languages in both types of content to further elaborate the significance of the dynamic. The research found that although members of the community are mostly Indonesian, English dominates all top-down contents. This domination functions informationally as a form of language accommodation while symbolically signifying that positive attitude is more assigned to English than Indonesian language as a status symbol. However, both English and Indonesian language dominate various different bottom-up contents. While the use of both languages also functions informationally as a form of language accommodation, the symbolic functions are more significant. That is, English as a marker of competence within the space designed for niche discussions and Indonesian language as a form of closeness and solidarity among members. Additionally, the use of English in the semi-formal bottom-up content indicates an influence of language choice by the top-down contents.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 has triggered governments worldwide, including WHO Indonesia, to use social media as an essential tool for digital education dissemination. In this case, WHO Indonesia uses Instagram to share posters, with a visual emphasis through the use of color in the word 'COVID-19'. This study aims to describe how colors are represented in the word COVID-19 on WHO Indonesia's Instagram posters. This study uses qualitative research. This study was analyzed using content analysis. The results reveal that the word COVID-19 in each poster content uploaded by WHO Indonesia has a variety of colors. The color representations contained in the word COVID-19 are red as a risk warning to smokers, dark orange as sensitivity and empathy for survivors of violence, yellow-gold as a reminder of healthy activities at home, indigo as awareness of body health, teal green as maintaining physical distance, dodger blue as maintaining health during a pandemic, sienna as resilience and fortitude in facing the pandemic, white as preventing the spread of the virus, and dim gray as serious form in facing COVID-19. This study aids in comprehending the reasoning behind the selection of specific colors in the posters utilized by WHO Indonesia in their digital education endeavors regarding COVID-19. It can prove beneficial in designing more impactful health messages and understanding the influence of colors on individuals' perceptions and reactions.

Abstract

This intertextual analysis of the mantras in the Nosaviraka healing ritual does not intend to compare the contents of the Quran and Hadits with the oral text of the mantras because the Quran is a sacred divine word without the intervention of creatures. The study aims to describe the relationship between Nosaviraka healing ritual, the Kaili tribe in Central Sulawesi and the the Quran and Hadits. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with an intertextual approach.  The data source for this research is Nosaviraka healing ritual. The data in the form of the arrays in the mantras were analyzed using the intertextual theory, namely determining the link between the arrays of the mantras and the Quran and Hadits. Based on the research results obtained three findings. First, here is a relationship between the text of the Nosaviraka mantra and the text of the Quran and Hadits. This relationship is shown in all parts of the mantra, namely (a) the initial mantra of agreement, (b) the mantra of summoning ancestors, (c) the mantra of healing, (d) the mantra of salvation, and (e) the mantra of the end. Second, the Nosaviraka ritual mantra as a hypogram, while the text of the Quran and Hadits as the owner of the transformation. Directly or indirectly, the Nosaviraka mantra, the Quran, and the Hadits can be seen from the similarity in structure, but the use of imagination is slightly different in theme. Third, there is a strong tendency that the Nosaviraka mantra is a form of belief in Allah SWT which is associated with the Quran as its hypogram.
