Abstract

Indonesian national insight is an important foundation in maintaining the integrity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) amidst religious, cultural, and ethnic diversity. One of the main pillars supporting this national insight is the transformation of Islam as the majority religion, which not only shapes the spiritual aspects of society but also contributes significantly to the development of national civilization. The transformation of Islam in Indonesia reflects the dynamic journey of normative values into contextual, adaptive, and inclusive socio-political and cultural practices. This article aims to examine Islam's contribution to the formation of a harmonious national civilization and its role as a pillar of national integration. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach with a literature study of historical, religious, and socio-cultural sources. The results show that Islam in Indonesia has undergone significant transformations from the kingdom era and colonialism to the reform era, adapting its teachings to local dynamics without losing its universal substance. Islamic civilization has contributed significantly to the birth of the Islamic boarding school education system, intellectual traditions, interfaith tolerance, and the spirit of unity in the struggle for independence. Islam also fosters national consciousness through modern Islamic organizations such as Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama, which play an active role in the nation-building process. In conclusion, the transformation of Islam and its civilization has become a cultural and spiritual force that strengthens Indonesia's national vision in facing global challenges and internal disintegration.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has had a significant impact on the behavior and mental health of Generation Z, particularly in the context of intensive social media use. Generation Z is known as a generation born and raised in the digital era, so their social interactions are heavily influenced by the virtual world. The phenomenon of increasing social anxiety and dependence on social media has become an increasingly complex and relevant psychological issue for research. This study aims to analyze the relationship between social anxiety and social media dependence in Generation Z from a modern psychological perspective. This study uses a qualitative approach based on library research by examining theories of developmental psychology, social psychology, and empirical data from various relevant scientific journal articles. The results show that excessive social media use is positively correlated with increased symptoms of social anxiety such as fear of judgment from others, avoidance of social situations, and discomfort in face-to-face interactions. Dependence on social validation in the form of "likes" and comments also reinforces the cycle of anxiety, forming passive-aggressive interaction patterns and social comparisons that negatively impact self-esteem. Furthermore, social media algorithms that trigger repeated content consumption reinforce emotional dependence, causing users to feel trapped by unrealistic social expectations. In conclusion, social anxiety and social media dependence in Generation Z reinforce each other and form a cycle that has a serious impact on mental health, so a multidisciplinary approach is needed to address this problem comprehensively.

Abstract

Social media has become a new arena for the articulation of identity, struggle, and social change, including on gender issues. The #MeToo and #NikahMuda campaigns represent two gender-based social movements operating digitally, but with opposing orientations and narratives: one is emancipatory and critical of sexual violence, while the other tends to be conservative and promotes local religious or cultural values about early marriage. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of these two campaigns sociologically by exploring the construction of gender meanings constructed through social media and uncovering the terrain of contestation between modern and traditional values. The study uses a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques through social media observation, documentation of campaign posts, and literature studies. The analysis is conducted using the approach of new social movement theory and the social construction of gender. The results show that #MeToo functions as a medium of resistance against patriarchal structures and opens up space for victim narratives, while #NikahMuda emphasizes the idealization of women's roles in the domestic sphere and social reproduction. Both campaigns use visual strategies, emotional narratives, and religious/cultural symbolism to build legitimacy. However, #MeToo tends to disrupt dominant norms, while #NikahMuda seeks to affirm existing norms. In conclusion, social media has become a terrain for contesting the meaning of gender between emancipatory and conservative discourses, reflecting the complexity of power relations, identity, and values in contemporary digital society.

Abstract

Marriage traditions are a cultural practice that not only represent social relations between individuals but also serve as an important medium in the formation and maintenance of a community's collective identity. Amidst rapid urbanization, there has been a shift in the values and meanings of marriage rituals, raising anthropological questions about how urban communities reinterpret these traditions. This study aims to examine the transformation of the meaning of marriage rituals in urban communities and their implications for the construction of collective identity. Using a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods, this study collected data through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of marriage ceremonies in several urban communities in Indonesia. The results show that despite modifications in form, symbols, and procedures, marriage rituals remain a space for the expression of communal identity. Adaptations to the urban context are demonstrated through the use of digital technology, simplification of the procession, and the adoption of modern symbols without eliminating deeply rooted traditional values. These changes demonstrate the creative dynamics of communities in maintaining cultural continuity in an adaptive manner. Collective identity is not formed through the uniformity of tradition, but through the negotiation of meaning between cultural heritage and the realities of urban life. The conclusion of this study confirms that marriage rituals remain a vital means of strengthening social solidarity and shared identity narratives, even amidst ongoing cultural transformation.

Abstract

Gambling has become a widespread social phenomenon that significantly impacts the mental, physical, social, and economic well-being of individuals involved. This study aims to analyze the effects of gambling activities on community welfare in the Medan Area through a Mixed Methods approach that combines both quantitative and qualitative analyses. Quantitative data were obtained through a survey of 200–300 respondents using the DASS-21 scale to measure levels of stress, anxiety, and depression, while qualitative data were collected through in-depth interviews with former gamblers, religious leaders, and members of the surrounding community. The findings indicate that gambling has a detrimental effect on mental health, marked by increased stress, sleep disturbances, and emotional dependency on gambling. Physically, respondents reported irregular eating patterns and chronic fatigue as a result of gambling activities. Economically, many individuals experienced financial losses that led to family conflicts and a decline in overall well-being. Community attitudes toward gambling varied; while the majority opposed it, a portion of the population remained permissive. From an Islamic perspective, gambling is prohibited as it brings harm to both individuals and society. This study recommends community- and faith-based approaches to rehabilitate gambling addicts, alongside educational campaigns to raise awareness of the dangers of gambling.

Abstract

Social media has become a new interactive space that not only represents women’s bodies and identities but also reproduces complex gender constructions. In this context, the visualization of the female body often becomes an arena for a tug-of-war between cultural objectification and the expression of individual agency. This study aims to examine how women’s bodies, gender, and agency are represented through social media using a visual anthropological approach, and to uncover the symbolic dynamics surrounding these representational practices. This research uses a desk study method by analyzing scientific literature, visual documentation, and theories of feminism, media, and visual anthropology. The results show that women’s representations in social media are heavily influenced by digital aesthetics, platform algorithms, and gender norms that are constantly being negotiated. Women’s bodies often become visual commodifications trapped in performative narratives, but at the same time, they also become a medium of agency in voicing identity, autonomy, and resistance to patriarchal standards. The aesthetics displayed through body images often blur the lines between personal choice and structural pressures, so that women’s agency manifests in ambivalent forms—between self-awareness and being trapped by digital expectations. This study concludes that social media is a symbolic field that harbors tensions between dominant structures and women’s subjectivities, and therefore demands a critical reading of every visualization of the body that is produced and consumed.

Abstract

The transformation of the Independent Curriculum is a response to the demands of globalization, the industrial revolution 4.0, and the emerging crisis of student character within the Indonesian education system. This curriculum promotes a differentiation-based approach, contextual learning, and the strengthening of the Pancasila Student Profile as the primary orientation for character formation. This study aims to philosophically analyze the rationale behind the Independent Curriculum and examine its implications for authentic student character development. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative study with a philosophical content analysis approach to official curriculum documents, educational theories, and relevant literature on character education. The results of the study indicate that the Independent Curriculum is rooted in the philosophies of progressivism and humanism, which position students as active, autonomous, and unique subjects in the educational process. The implementation of this curriculum allows for the transformative integration of moral, spiritual, and social values into learning activities. Its implementation provides space for teachers to adapt learning to students’ needs and potential, strengthens learning independence, and expands the school’s role as a character-building ecosystem. However, the results also indicate challenges in terms of teacher preparedness, unequal access, and consistent implementation in the field. The conclusions of this study confirm that the Independent Curriculum has great potential to shape students’ character holistically, provided it is supported by policies, teacher training, and ongoing evaluation.

Abstract

Education as an instrument of social transformation has been the focus of attention of many thinkers, including Paulo Freire and Ki Hajar Dewantara who have had a major influence in the development of critical education. The background of this study departs from the urgency of building an education system that is able to free students from structural and cultural domination that shackles their human potential. This study aims to comparatively examine the thoughts of Paulo Freire and Ki Hajar Dewantara in the context of critical education, by highlighting the similarities and differences between the two in terms of educational goals, the roles of teachers and students, and the pedagogical approaches used. The research method used is a qualitative study with a library approach, reviewing the primary and secondary works of both figures as well as a critical analysis of contemporary critical education theory. The results show that Paulo Freire emphasizes education as a praxis of liberation through horizontal dialogue, critical awareness (conscientization), and the destruction of the banking-style education model. Meanwhile, Ki Hajar Dewantara emphasizes the importance of contextual education and rooted in the nation’s cultural values, with the principle of “ing ngarso sung tulodo, ing madyo mangun karso, tut wuri handayani” as an educational leadership strategy. Both reject authoritarian approaches and position students as active subjects in the learning process. The conclusion of this study suggests that integrating Freire’s and Dewantara’s ideas can enrich critical education discourse in Indonesia, particularly in developing a dialogical, contextual, and transformative curriculum model.

Abstract

The contemporary da'wah phenomenon displays various communication styles that reflect the social and cultural developments of society, one of which is the rhetorical approach in da’wah combined with Sufi values. Gus Miftah’s da'wah incident has been in the spotlight because of his distinctive rhetoric which is considered eccentric but full of spiritual messages. This study aims to analyze the Sufi dimension in Gus Miftah’s da’wah rhetoric as a reflection of the integration of Islamic mystical values with religious communication strategies in the modern era. The method used is a qualitative-descriptive approach with content analysis techniques on Gus Miftah’s sermons documented in digital media and a library study of classical and contemporary Sufi literature. The results of the study show that Gus Miftah's rhetoric is not only based on persuasive and emotional aspects, but also contains Sufi elements such as the concepts of ikhlas, zuhud, mahabbah, and tazkiyah al-nafs delivered in popular and inclusive language. This strategy has proven effective in reaching marginalized groups who have so far been less touched by conventional da'wah. Gus Miftah employs a Sufi approach in a contemporary context without losing the spiritual essence of Islam, making his preaching not merely informative but also transformational. In conclusion, preaching, incorporating Sufi dimensions through adaptive rhetoric, is able to transcend social barriers and broaden the meaning of preaching as a process of inner enlightenment. These findings demonstrate that Sufism remains relevant as the soul of preaching amidst the dynamics of modern religious communication.

Abstract

Islamic civilization is one of the world’s great civilizations, not only shaping belief systems and laws but also exerting a significant influence on the socio-cultural order of societies in various parts of the world. The background of this study is based on the importance of understanding the dynamics of the development of Islamic civilization in a socio-cultural context, as an effort to trace the roots of its strength and the challenges of transformation it has faced throughout history. The purpose of this study is to analyze the development of Islamic civilization from the classical to the contemporary period, focusing on the accompanying social and cultural aspects. This research uses a qualitative method with a historical-sociological approach, namely through a literature review of relevant primary and secondary literature. The results show that Islamic civilization developed dynamically through interactions with local cultures, scientific achievements, the influence of Sufism, and the integration of Islamic values into the social structure of society. During the classical period, centers of civilization such as Baghdad, Cairo, and Cordoba became symbols of the integration of Islamic science, art, and ethics in public life. In the modern era, Islamic civilization faces the challenges of globalization, secularism, and an identity crisis, but also shows a resurgence in the form of a revitalization of Islamic values in contemporary culture through education, Islamic art, and socio-religious movements. In conclusion, the development of Islamic civilization from a socio-cultural perspective reflects Islam's ability to adapt and maintain its core values in changing times.
