Abstract

Malnutrition contributes to morbidity, mortality, disability, and reduced national human resource quality. Adequate nutrition during infancy is essential for optimal growth, with exclusive breastfeeding recommended for the first six months and continued breastfeeding with nutritious complementary foods thereafter. In 2017, exclusive breastfeeding coverage in Mempawah District was only 60.7%, and the Wajok Hulu Community Health Center had the lowest rate at 24.1%, indicating many infants received complementary foods too early. This study aimed to examine the relationship between complementary feeding and the nutritional status of infants aged 6–11 months in Wajok Hulu Village. Using a retrospective case–control design with 64 infants, results showed that most infants had good nutritional status despite receiving inappropriate complementary feeding. The study concluded that there was no significant relationship between complementary feeding practices and nutritional status (p = 0.337), suggesting that other factors may play a greater role in determining infant nutrition.

Abstract

Anemia is a condition characterized by a decrease in the number of red blood cells or hemoglobin concentration, which impairs the blood’s capacity to transport oxygen to body tissues. The high prevalence of anemia is influenced by several factors, including inadequate intake of iron and other essential nutrients such as vitamins A, C, folate, riboflavin, and vitamin B12. Iron requirements can be fulfilled through the consumption of animal-based foods, which provide highly bioavailable iron, or plant-based foods, which contain iron with lower absorption rates. This study aimed to determine the differences in hemoglobin levels before and after the administration of iron tablets and eggs among female students at SMA N 1 Segedong, located in the working area of the Segedong Community Health Center, Mempawah Regency. A quasi-experimental design with a non-randomized one-group pretest–posttest approach was employed. The sample was selected using purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses with the Chi-square test. The results showed a significant difference in hemoglobin levels before and after iron tablet administration (p = 0.001) and before and after egg consumption (p = 0.000). In conclusion, there were significant differences in hemoglobin levels following the administration of iron tablets and eggs among female students at SMA N 1 Segedong.

Abstract

The postpartum period is a natural phase experienced by women after childbirth and typically lasts approximately six weeks. During this period, various physiological changes occur, including uterine involution, lochia discharge, and the initiation and maintenance of lactation. This study aimed to determine the effect of banana blossom consumption on breast milk production among postpartum mothers at PMB Utin Mulia, Pontianak. A true experimental design with a posttest-only control group approach was employed. The study population consisted of all breastfeeding postpartum mothers in the working area of PMB Utin Mulia. A total of 20 postpartum mothers were selected as samples based on predetermined inclusion criteria. Data were analyzed using the paired t-test. The results demonstrated that banana blossom consumption had a significant effect on breast milk production among postpartum mothers at PMB Utin Mulia. In conclusion, banana blossom consumption was found to influence breast milk production during the postpartum period.

Abstract

The Measles–Rubella (MR) vaccine is a combined vaccine intended to prevent measles and rubella, two infectious diseases that can cause serious health complications in children and women of reproductive age. Despite the national MR immunization program, coverage remains suboptimal in several areas. Data from the Tuan Tuan Community Health Center, Benua Kayong District, in 2018 showed that during School Children Immunization Month (BIAS), only 281 out of 767 elementary school students received the MR vaccine, and five elementary schools refused MR immunization due to parental considerations. This study aimed to analyze factors associated with maternal compliance with MR immunization among elementary school students in the working area of the Tuan Tuan Community Health Center, Ketapang Regency. This study employed an analytical cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 106 parents of first-grade elementary school students in Tuan Tuan Village, Benua Kayong District, Ketapang Regency. Samples were selected using simple random sampling, with proportional sampling applied to each elementary school. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed statistically. The results showed that maternal age was significantly associated with MR immunization compliance, while maternal occupation, socioeconomic status, and maternal knowledge were not associated with compliance. Environmental support was found to have a significant relationship with maternal compliance with MR immunization. In conclusion, maternal age and environmental support were factors associated with maternal compliance with MR immunization among elementary school students in Tuan Tuan Village. Strengthening environmental support and targeted health education may improve MR immunization coverage in this area.

Abstract

Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience commonly experienced during childbirth and is physiologically caused by distension of the lower uterine segment, cervical dilation, stretching of cervical tissues, and pressure on surrounding structures and nerves, which may lead to fear and anxiety and affect both the mother and the fetus. A preliminary survey conducted at BPM Utin Mulya, Pontianak City, reported approximately 300 deliveries in 2018, with most mothers experiencing severe pain in the abdomen, waist, back, and radiating to the spine. The birthing ball is a non-pharmacological pain management method that involves sitting on the ball and gently rocking back and forth to promote comfort and facilitate labor progression. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of birthing ball exercises in reducing pain during the active phase of the first stage of labor. A quasi-experimental design with a pretest–posttest non-equivalent control group was applied, involving 30 women in the active phase of the first stage of labor. The intervention group received birthing ball exercises, while the control group was given deep breathing relaxation. Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon and Mann–Whitney non-parametric tests. The results showed a significant reduction in pain scale in the birthing ball group after the intervention (p = 0.001), while the control group also showed a reduction after deep breathing relaxation (p = 0.046); however, the decrease in pain was greater in the birthing ball group. In conclusion, birthing ball exercises are more effective than deep breathing relaxation in reducing pain during the active phase of the first stage of labor.

Abstract

Preconception health, particularly nutritional status, is a crucial factor in pregnancy preparation and is closely associated with maternal and neonatal outcomes. In West Kalimantan, the proportion of pregnant women at risk of Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) reached 14.0% in 2017. Additionally, the prevalence of Low Birth Weight (LBW) increased from 3.20% in 2016 to 3.62% in 2017. This study aimed to determine differences in knowledge and attitudes of prospective brides before and after receiving health education on preconception nutrition delivered through a WhatsApp group in the West Pontianak Office of Religious Affairs (KUA) area. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach. A total of 41 respondents were selected using consecutive sampling. Primary data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The results showed a significant improvement in both knowledge and attitudes of prospective brides after the health education intervention, with a p-value < 0.05 (p = 0.000). In conclusion, health education delivered through WhatsApp groups is effective in improving knowledge and attitudes regarding preconception nutrition among prospective brides.
