Abstract

UNIKOM has become a crucial center for international students learning Indonesian as a Foreign Language (BIPA). The specially designed BIPA program, with experienced instructors, ensures effective learning. UNIKOM’s multicultural environment enriches the educational experience and accelerates cultural adaptation. The program also teaches Indonesian culture, providing essential insights for international students' studies and lives in Indonesia. However, using Indonesian as a second language often leads to language errors, primarily influenced by the students’ dominant mother tongues. This research aims to explore the sociolinguistic phenomena in bilingual learning environments and identify the causes and purposes of these occurrences. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method. Data collection techniques include observation and conversation, utilizing participant observation, recording, and note-taking. Data were naturally gathered during the BIPA learning process. The findings reveal sociolinguistic phenomena such as code-switching and code-mixing. Researchers identified 21 sociolinguistic instances, divided into two categories: 14 instances of code-mixing 10 involving Indonesian to English and 4 from Indonesian to Arabic and 7 instances of code-switching 5 from Indonesian to English and 2 from Indonesian to Arabic. The study reveals that code-mixing and code-switching in BIPA classes at UNIKOM serve to enhance understanding between students and instructors, facilitating inquiries and explanations for terms unfamiliar in students’ native languages.

Abstract

This study examines the translation equivalence in the song Satu Bulan by Bernadya and its Arabic version Syahr Ba'd. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this research aims to explore how meaning, structure, and cultural nuances are preserved or altered during translation. The data consists of the Indonesian lyrics of Satu Bulan and its Arabic translation. Data collection is conducted through a documentation of the two texts, focusing on key phrases, idiomatic expressions, and cultural elements. The analysis employs interactive model, encompassing data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Findings reveal that most translations achieve equivalence, particularly at word, above the word, grammatical, and pragmatic levels. The translator effectively maintains word meanings and adapts sentence structures and grammatical categories to suit the target language. However, some non-equivalent translations were identified, involving shifts in meaning or loss of nuance. These imbalances are primarily influenced by cultural differences, idiomatic expressions, and structural variations between Indonesian and Arabic. Overall, the translation successfully balances linguistic accuracy and cultural adaptation, with minor deviations that reflect the complexities of cross-language equivalence.

Abstract

The novel Al-Lissu wa Al-Kilaab is one of the novels by Naguib Mahfouz containing the story of a prisoner who wants to take revenge on his best friend. The main character in this novel is Said Mahran who works as a thief with his wife and best friends, Ilish and Nabawiyya. This novel tells the theft carried out by them, namely Rauf and Said. Both are teachers and students who collaborated in the theft. However, in the middle of carrying out the action, Rauf suddenly called the police and informed him of the theft committed by Said. Said was arrested and imprisoned, not to mention his wife and co-workers who wanted to help him because they had worked together to arrest him. The conflict begins when Said comes out of prison and wants to take revenge on those who have betrayed him. Because of the feeling of anger and annoyance that rages in the chest, it shows the attitude of speech actions born from a person's psychological state. In this case, speech acts born due to psychological conditions were found in pragmatic studies, namely expressive illocution speech. The approach is more suitable for understanding the concept of expressive speech in the novel. Thus, this research discusses the form and function of expressive speech in the novel Al-Lissu wa Al-Kilaab.The objectives of this research are: first, to describe the form of expressive speech in the novel Al-lissu wa Al-Kilaab by Naguib Mahfouz. Second, describing the expressive function in the novel Al-Lissu wa Al-Kilaab by Nanguib Mahfouz. The research method used in this study is the descriptive analytical method. The data collection method carried out is by the Determinant Element Sorting Technique (PUP). The analysis method used in this study is the extra-lingual matching method. The result of this research is to describe the form and expressive function contained in the novel Al-Lissu wa Al-Kilaab by Naguib Mahfouz. In this study, three types of speech acts were found, namely literal direct speech, literal indirect speech, and non-literal indirect speech. The function of expressive speech in the novel Al-Lissu wa Al-Kilaab shows feelings of anger, confidence, sadness, hope, gratitude, complaining, and farewell.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze loanwords from Arabic that have been integrated into the Indonesian language, with a case study focusing on the dakwah content from the YouTube channel The Sungkars, titled “Ustadz Ini Jawab Semua Pertanyaan Sulit Tentang Tuhan Dan Agama!!” (This Ustadz Answers All Difficult Questions About God and Religion!!). The main focus lies on the form, meaning, and semantic adaptation of Arabic terms used in religious discourse. The method employed is descriptive-analytic, with data collected through documentation and literature study. Data were analyzed using morphological and semantic approaches to reveal phonological transformations and meaning shifts. The findings show that many Arabic terms such as ilmu (knowledge), takdir (destiny), qadarallah (God’s will), akidah (creed), musyrik (polytheist), taat (obedient), salat (prayer), and konsekuensi (consequence) have been fully or partially absorbed into Indonesian, with meanings adapted to suit the context of dakwah and the Islamic cultural discourse in Indonesia. This absorption process not only enriches the Indonesian lexicon but also reflects the development of Islamic discourse in contemporary Muslim society through popular media.

Abstract

The study of language, commonly referred to as linguistics, encompasses various subfields, one of which is pragmatics. Within pragmatics, there are further areas of study, including deixis. Deixis is an essential aspect often used in both oral and written communication, such as in hikayat (classical Malay literary works). Hikayat is a type of written literary work widely read for its moral lessons, including in the Hikayat Hadis Ketiga from the book al-Mawa'izh al-Ushfuriyah. This study aims to identify the forms and contextual meanings of personal deixis in the Hikayat Hadis Ketiga of the book al-Mawa'izh al-Ushfuriyah. The research method employed is descriptive analysis with a qualitative approach. The data consists of personal deixis found in the Hikayat Hadis Ketiga. Data collection was carried out using the listening and note-taking techniques. The data analysis process involved reading, identifying, categorizing, analyzing, and concluding. The results of this study indicate that the Hikayat Hadits Ketiga from al-Mawa'izh al-Ushfuriyah predominantly uses third-person deixis compared to first and second-person deixis. The most frequently used third-person deixis includes dlomir bariz muttashil (ه) and dlomir moustatir jawaz (هو), which mostly refer to Ali Ra. and the Prophet Muhammad Saw.
