Abstract

Exclusive breastfeeding is a condition where infants receive only breast milk from the mother without the addition of other liquids or solid foods, except for syrups containing vitamins, mineral supplements or drugs with the permission of a doctor. Based on the results of the 2024 Indonesian Nutrition Status Survey, the proportion of toddlers who received early breastfeeding initiation (IMD) in Bengkulu was 57.1%, while the proportion of infants aged 0-5 months receiving exclusive breastfeeding was 68.7%. In this article we discuss the activities of Dehasen University Bengkulu's Thematic Community Service Program (KKN-T) in 2025 which aims to improve community knowledge, awareness and behavior. The program is implemented through an educational approach, namely with the method of exclusive breastfeeding counseling, exclusive breastfeeding assistance visits and demonstration of oxytocin massage techniques and lactation massage using flip sheets and counseling kit props. This activity was carried out in collaboration with village officials and the local community. The results of the activity showed an increase in community awareness regarding the importance of exclusive breastfeeding. From the results of observations through the recapitulation of pre-test results there were 10 people (33.3%) who did not understand about exclusive breastfeeding, and after counseling and post-test observations there were 30 people (100%) who understood the importance of exclusive breastfeeding. This shows that the exclusive breastfeeding counseling program is quite effective as a community-based promotive and preventive strategy that can be a model of prevention.

Abstract

Exclusive breastfeeding is the provision of breast milk as early as possible after delivery, given without a schedule and no other food, even water, until the baby is 6 months old. Exclusive breastfeeding is an ideal source of nutrition because its composition is naturally balanced and in accordance with the growth and development of the baby, so that exclusive breastfeeding is the most perfect food for babies in terms of quality and quantity, in addition to being cheap, easy to obtain and can also be given at any time of the day, the best and most perfect first food for babies. The purpose of this community service activity is to increase the knowledge and understanding of mothers about the importance of providing exclusive breastfeeding to babies and teach the correct breastfeeding techniques. This activity is carried out by providing counseling with leaflets to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers about breast milk and its benefits for the growth and development of babies. This counseling was carried out on June 9, 2025 in Dusun I, E. Wonokerto Village, Musi Rawas Regency, which was attended by 8 pregnant and breastfeeding participants. As a result, after the counseling, 8 pregnant and breastfeeding participants experienced an increase in knowledge about exclusive breastfeeding and the correct way to breastfeed. It is hoped that after this activity, all pregnant women and mothers who have babies aged 0-6 months can provide exclusive breastfeeding until the baby is 2 years old because breast milk contains nutrients and various immune substances that babies need so that it can protect babies from diseases such as diarrhea, earache, respiratory tract infections and allergies.

Abstract

Diarrhoea is usually caused by a virus or, sometimes, food contaminated by bacteria. It is rarely a sign of other disorders, such as inflammatory bowel disease or irritable bowel syndrome (Febriyanti and Triredjeki, 2021). According to WHO and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), there are approximately two billion cases of diarrhoeal disease worldwide each year, and 1.9 million children under the age of 5 die from diarrhoea. Of all child deaths from diarrhoea, 78% occur in Southeast Africa and the Asian region (World gastroentorology Organisation, 2020). January the number of patients suffering from diarrhoea was 70 patients, rising to 84 patients in February, an increase of 14%. (WHO, 2020). Based on the PISP Report Data Recap UPTD Puskesmas Penarik in 2024, there were 6 cases of diarrhoea from RT 04 Suka Maju Village out of a total of 32 cases of diarrhoea in the UPTD Puskesmas Penarik Working Area. This should certainly be a concern because according to WHO diarrhoea is the third cause of death in children aged 1-59 months. This disease can be prevented and treated, one of which is by washing hands effectively after every activity. This Community Service through KKN-T is a form of community service that aims to improve the knowledge, awareness and behaviour of the community of RT 04 Suka Maju Village about the prevention and treatment of diarrhoea. The program was carried out through educational methods, hand washing campaign practices and Gotong Royong implementation of Clean and Healthy Living Behaviour (PHBS) which was carried out at Integrated Paud Desa Suka Maju Kec. Penarik Kab. Mukomuko Bengkulu with the target of Paud children, teachers, and mothers of toddlers totalling 44 people. The community has received information about the causes, signs and symptoms, prevention and treatment of diarrhoea and how to wash hands effectively and the community together participated in gotong royong cleaning the school environment for the implementation of PHBS. The results of this activity showed an increase in community knowledge and awareness about diarrhoea, prevention and application of effective hand washing and PHBS for diarrhoea prevention efforts in Suka Maju village. It is hoped that the community can implement clean and healthy living behaviour.
