Abstract

This study aims to analyze the short story Filosofi Kopi by Dee Lestari using a sociological literary approach drawn from the theoretical frameworks of Sapardi Djoko Damono, Alan Swingewood, and Lucien Goldmann. This short story is one of the richest contemporary Indonesian literary works in terms of social reality representation, encompassing coffee culture as a symbol of urban middle-class identity, friendship dynamics under economic pressure, tensions between traditional values and modernization, and the resistance of local wisdom against global capitalist domination. The research method employed is descriptive qualitative with close reading, note-taking, and analysis techniques. The theoretical foundations include: (1) Sapardi Djoko Damono's literary sociology theory regarding literary works as a mirror of social life; (2) Swingewood's approach to literature as a sociocultural document and ideological expression of social groups; and (3) Goldmann's genetic structuralism that examines the author's vision du monde in relation to social class. The findings indicate that Filosofi Kopi effectively represents the social reality of early twenty-first century urban Indonesian society, embodies a humanist world view transcending class boundaries, and fulfills social functions as a critique of consumer culture as well as an internalization of humanistic values. This study is expected to enrich the field of literary sociology applied to contemporary Indonesian literary works.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the portrayal of poverty in Ahmad Tohari’s short story “Senyum Karyamin” through a sociological approach to literature. This short story was selected because it depicts the lives of the lower class, which are fraught with social and economic problems, and reflects the realities of life closely tied to the conditions of marginalized communities. The method used in this study is qualitative descriptive analysis employing content analysis techniques. Data was obtained from the short story text, which was analyzed based on social aspects that deeply reflect conditions of poverty. The research findings indicate that the poverty experienced by the character Karyamin is not merely economic in nature, but is also influenced by an unjust social structure that fails to support the underprivileged. This is evident in the character’s inability to meet basic needs, harsh working conditions, and pressures from the economic system such as the presence of middlemen, debt, and burdensome social obligations. Furthermore, a strong social irony is present: the character, who is starving, is asked to contribute to a humanitarian fund. The short story also portrays individual resilience through the symbol of a “smile,” which reflects both resignation and the struggle to survive in the face of life’s harsh realities. Thus, this short story not only depicts the reality of poverty but also offers a social critique of economic inequality and the lack of social awareness in society. This study is expected to provide a deeper understanding of the relationship between literary works and social reality, particularly in examining the living conditions of the lower class.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the short story "Rembulan di Mata Ibu" by Asma Nadia using a structural approach. This approach focuses on intrinsic elements such as theme, plot, characterization, setting, point of view, and message. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with textual analysis through close reading. The results indicate that the main theme of the short story is maternal love hidden behind a strict attitude, along with the inner conflict between a child and her mother. The plot follows a progressive structure with a strong emotional climax. Characterization highlights the psychological development of the main character, while the setting strengthens the emotional atmosphere of the story. The use of the first-person point of view creates a closer emotional connection with the reader. The message conveyed emphasizes the importance of understanding parental love, which is not always expressed directly. Therefore, the structural approach effectively reveals the interrelation of intrinsic elements in constructing the overall meaning of the short story

Abstract

This analysis uses a sociological approach to literature to examine the short story Tukang Cukur. This short story tells the life of Gito, an elementary school child from a poor farming family in Getas Pejaten (Central Java) in the 1950s–1960s, who faces military violence and famine. The characters are positioned in the context of the conflict between communist and anti-communist ideologies. To interpret the text based on social theory, the method used in this analysis is a qualitative descriptive method. The results of the analysis are the themes of social class, state power, ideological propaganda, and the role of institutions (schools, the military) in the short story. Meanwhile, referring to theoretical analysis (Marxism, Bourdieu, Durkheim, feminism) shows the dominance of military symbolic capital and the marginalization of ordinary people. Suggestions for further research include comparative studies of literature with similar themes and studies of social acceptance in society.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of Management Information Systems (MIS) in improving the quality of managerial decision-making through a literature review approach. The review covers 20 previous studies that explore the relationship between MIS implementation and decision-making effectiveness across various sectors, including government, education, business, and healthcare. The findings indicate that MIS plays a crucial role in providing accurate, relevant, and timely information, which assists managers in analyzing problems, evaluating alternatives, and making more rational decisions. Furthermore, the integration of MIS with digital technologies such as big data, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence enhances organizations’ capability for data-driven decision-making. However, the effectiveness of MIS implementation still depends on human resources, top management support, and technological infrastructure readiness. Overall, this study emphasizes that MIS is not merely an administrative tool but a strategic instrument that strengthens organizational competitiveness in the digital era

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the interrelation between tradition, collective violence, and social pressure in The Lottery, a short story by Shirley Jackson, using a sociological approach to literature. This approach is applied through descriptive qualitative analysis and close reading of the text, examining how social structures and cultural norms are reflected in the narrative. The findings reveal that the annual lottery ritual in the story is carried out from generation to generation without critical questioning, to the extent that ritual violence—stoning the selected individual to death—is normalized as part of tradition. This annual practice functions as a form of cultural hegemony: it sustains the village’s social structure and leads the community to perceive violence as something “natural” or acceptable. The uncritical continuation of tradition transforms brutal acts into routine practices that are no longer seen as disturbing or abnormal by the villagers. Furthermore, strong social pressure within the community ensures full conformity. The villagers are reluctant to question the ritual despite their doubts; dissenting voices are suppressed through social expectations such as being “a good sport” or the belief that everyone has an equal chance in the lottery. As a result, the characters demonstrate a conflict between personal conscience and collective demands reinforced by group pressure. This social pressure ultimately compels individuals to conform, even to the point of suppressing their own moral judgment. In conclusion, The Lottery illustrates how inherited traditions and group solidarity can construct collective violence as a normalized social practice. The story presents a sociological critique, showing that blind adherence to tradition and the dynamics of social pressure can transform ordinary individuals into agents of cruelty.
