Abstract

This research sets out to explore the Interlanguage pragmatic motivation in EFL to their pragmatic production. This research is focus on the construct and impact of Interlanguage pragmatic motivation in EFL to their pragmatic production. The participants of the study were the university students chosen randomly from among intermediate EFL learners. There are three instruments in this study; there will be different types of analyses. Both general and speech-act-specific motivation questionnaires will be analysed by using factor analysis on a five-point Likert scale (1-5). Skewness and kurtosis will be calculated to investigate whether the questionnaires and the WDCT items fell within the normal range. Regression analysis will be done to measure how well general pragmatic motivation and Speech-act-specific motivation could predict pragmatic production. Several conclusions can be drawn from the resent study. First, language learners possess a specific type of motivation for the acquisition of interlanguage pragmatics, called pragmatic motivation, which refers to two interrelated types of motivation: general pragmatic motivation and speech-act-specific motivation. Second, EFL learners are strongly motivated to acquire and develop English pragmatic features, i.e. their pragmatic motivation is high; however, they do not have the necessary pragmatic knowledge. Third, predicting EFL learners’ pragmatic production based on their speech-act-specific motivation is somehow possible since both pragmatic production and speech-act-specific motivation focus on learners’ illocutionary competence, i.e. language functions and speech acts.

Abstract

Education is a critical area in promoting gender equality to the young generation of this country. The curriculum that promotes gender equality could be represented in a textbook as a teaching material resource commonly used in Indonesia. This study is a critical discourse analysis that examines the gender representation in the English textbook for the third grade of primary school in order to discover whether or not the textbook promotes gender equality. The data were collected from “Grow With English” English book 3 published by Erlangga Publisher. The data in the forms of pictures, words, phrases, and sentences were then analyzed qualitatively by using Fairclough’s three dimensional frameworks and Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics. The findings revealed that: the examined textbook represents genders equally in terms of the quantity in which females and males are portrayed equally in pictorial representation and names of characters. In terms of social roles of job positions, male and female are also portrayed occupying various professional occupations such as doctors, fire fighters, police officers, and so on. However, the portrayals of male and female in domestic roles and activities are still stereotypical in which females are portrayed doing more domestic activities and less active, while males are portrayed doing more active outdoor activities. These results may have the implication that the English teachers for young learners could improvise by providing more understanding about gender equality while using the textbook.

Abstract

Technological applications in education are altering how we collect information, conduct research, and share data with others. New computerized tools are changing the education community and how we pass knowledge to students. With these new tools, technology is being integrated into the classroom at larger scales every year. With more electronic resources available for teachers, new teaching methodologies are being used to improve EFL and ESL learners. The objectives of this academic paper are to acknowledge the significance of technological applications for teachers and language skill development in learners,  to discuss the process of integration of these new technologies into the classroom, and review possible problems with the introduction of these new tools into the English classroom with regards to listening, Reading, Writing, and speaking. Throughout this paper, the term technological education and integration has been defined. An explanation of the use of technology is given. Previous studies and research on the use of Technologies in order to improve language learning skills in the classroom have been reviewed and discussed. Positive ways these Technologies can be used to assist students improve their English language skills are also suggested.

Abstract

Writing is an essential skill for EFL learners to be able to communicate effectively. Achieving effective communication is condemned by the degree of developing text coherence. Reviewing the related literature shows that coherence, unlike other text features, posits a significant problem with L2 learners, males and females. Due to biological and cultural differences between males and females, both sexes may bring variety to coherence development in text writing. This case has not received a due account in discourse analysis studies, creating a gap in the literature. Accordingly, the present study aimed to identify the level of coherence in L2 written texts from a gender perspective. To achieve the objectives of the study, all 40 graduates of English, 20 males, and 20 females, Faculty of Education, Ibb University, Yemen, in the academic year 2019 – 2020, participated in this study. A writing test was used as a research tool to collect the required data. Using both descriptive and inferential research approaches, a number of findings were revealed. The most important ones are: there was a lack of coherence in both males' and females' written texts (M = 15.45/30, SD = 4.56); and there were no statistically significant differences between the mean score of male and female graduates (M = 16.10 > 14.80 <, SD = 4.96 > 4.14  , t = - 0.90,  P > 0.05) attributed to the variable of gender. Based on the findings of the study, a number of pedagogical implications were introduced; most notably, policymakers, course designers, and teachers should pay ample attention to the contents of writing courses focusing on text coherence to sensitize EFL learners to such a text feature to be able to produce coherent texts.

Abstract

There have been many studies on first language interference towards learners’ second or foreign language learning, but not many on the otherwise. This study investigates the effects of learning Japanese as a foreign language towards learners’ first language use, Indonesian. The data for this qualitative study were obtained from five Japanese learners who had different backgrounds of Japanese learning. Observation and interview were used as the research instruments to collect the data in this study. The results were found that the learners showed foreign language effects; grammatical aspects and borrowing. In short, learning a foreign language (FL) influences learners’ first language (L1), which means that learning Japanese language had affected the learners’ first language, Indonesian. It can be concluded that learning a second or foreign language may interfere a learner’s first language.

Abstract

To bind is one of the Bima language verbs. Verbs are one of the main classes of words that are central and complex. This is proven by the constant presence of verbs in speech, which determine the presence of arguments and have the authority to determine the semantic roles in each accompanying argument. The aim of this research is to determine the mapping and explication of the verb with the meaning 'to bind'. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method, which is based on post-positivist principles and is designed to investigate scientific conditions and phenomena. The data sources are in the form of oral data, written data collected from Bima language storybooks, and language intuition. The data collection techniques used are interviews and literature study. Meanwhile, the data analysis method used is the agih method which is used in analyzing semantic structures with the theory of Natural Semantic Metalanguage in the application of changing forms and insertion or paraphrasing techniques to express the original meaning with 65 items known as explication. The verb 'binding' is mapped based on: entity, process, tool, and result. The Bima language verb with the meaning 'to bind' is expressed in the lexicon: diki, leto, sarente, wura, nggambe, wole, buhu, oka, tongge.

Abstract

This article discusses the relationship between the mental intelligence of children with autism and their capability in understanding the complexity of sentence structure represented in utterances performed by their teachers. In addition, this study also explains the complexity of the sentence structure produced by the autistic children in interacting with the teachers. The data of this research are in the form of sentence structures used in the class interaction between teachers and students with autism. The collected data were then analyzed by classifying the sentences used by the teachers and the sentences produced by children with autism. The results showed that children with high mental intelligence were able to understand the complex sentence structures used by the teachers and were able to respond and speak utterances in the form of complex sentences. This shows that children with high mental intelligence understand and can produce sentences in a complex structure better than those with a low mental one.

Abstract

This study tested a statistically significant relationship between the pragmatic principle concerning iconicity of sequence and temporal adjuncts. While previous studies focused on the qualitative studies of temporal adjuncts with the textual analysis of English for everyday use, such as cookbooks and novels in English, this study contributed to the field by examining reputable international journal writer’s pragmatic competence concerning iconicity of sequence in temporal adjuncts. The data was collected from reputable international applied linguistics research articles in English published in System and English for Specific Purposes. They were published from 2023 to 2025. The data in the study were 30 applied linguistics research articles. They had 236 tokens of temporal adjuncts to study the pragmatic principle concerning iconicity of sequence. The data was analyzed by the inferential statistical program called SPSS version 29 via Pearson Correlation. The results of the study clearly showed a statistically significant relationship between iconicity of sequence and temporal adjuncts from reputable international journal writers. The p-value was reported at 0.02. It was concluded that the reputable international writers in the fields of applied linguistics had pragmatic competence concerning iconicity of sequence.

Abstract

With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly all theoretical and practical classes and methods of assessment had to be delivered on digital platforms. This paper reports the use of task-based assessment of the communicative competence of first-year pre-service English language teachers. The aim was to explore the role of the platform where the tasks were held on the students’ self-assessment of their spoken performances. The participants (n=50) evaluated their linguistic, discourse, strategic and sociolinguistics competence on two public speaking tasks. The face-to-face speaking task required elaborating on two famous quotes, whereas the online speaking task had to do with the semiotic analysis of a TV commercial which was decided upon by the teacher candidate. Student evaluations of their communicative competence ranged on a scale from one to five, where one meant very poor and five meant very good. The results indicated that the only component of communicative competence that was viewed to be good was discourse competence in the face-to-face task; however, all the elements of communicative competence were considered to be good except for the sociolinguistic competence in the face-to-screen task. The main findings were (i) that the students had a more positive evaluation of their communicative competence when making online presentations and (ii) that they mostly attributed the differences in their self-evaluations either to the platform or to a combination of the platform and the nature of the task. Yet, face-to-face interaction seems to act as a requirement to improve the sociolinguistic competence of foreign language teacher candidates.

Abstract

The International English Language Test System (IELTS) is one of the most reputable English tests that is used to assess the language proficiency of those who intend to study or work in an English speaking context. It is one of the most large-scale proficiency tests which affects the lives of many students, as well as immigrants as the results of the test, are used for making critical decisions about the test takers. Moreover, the process of designing a good test requires a clear understanding of both validity and reliability of the test format. Therefore, in the current paper, we try to offer a descriptive review of the IELTS test by concentrating on various issues such as reliability, validity and washback.
