Abstract

This research focuses on the use of parental support messages for children and what these messages mean. Messages of support are a form of positive communication to encourage children to become better individuals. This research used the qualitative method. In answering the formulation problem, speech act theory was used by Yule (2006) which was elaborated by Duncan (2009) regarding messages of support, and Wolfson & Judd (1983) about the meaning behind these support messages. The data in this study are expressive utterances that contain praise, approval, and encouragement originating from films about parenting. The data were collected using listening and note-taking techniques and then analyzed using Spradley (2016). From the research that has been done, it is concluded that each message of support conveyed has its own aims and objectives. The delivery of messages of support is influenced by the background of speakers and speech partners. Those indicate that parenting support messages play a role in parent-child communication. Its main role is to strengthen solidarity and maintain harmony between speakers. So, the language aspect must be considered by parents. This research used term “Parentinguistic” or abbreviation of Parenting Linguistic, to invite further research on the relationship between parenting and language.

Abstract

The current study examined Thai EFL Mattayom learners’ pragmatic discourse of givenness via A-movement constructions. While previous studies focused on Thai undergraduate students and their error production in passive voice, this study innovatively contributes to the field by selecting a different group of participants. The participants in this study were 67 Mattayom students in Thailand, of which 45 were from public schools and 22 were from private schools. The participants were asked to write an academic essay on the topic of Thai Soft Power, which is the Thai government's campaign for tourism and culture from 2023 to 2024. The data analysis follows the principle of pragmatic discourse of givenness. The SPSS version 29 was used for the data analysis to seek a correlation between the production of passive voice by EFL learners and pragmatic discourse of givenness via A-movement constructions. The study showed that there is no statistically significant relationship between the production of passive voice by EFL Mattayom learners and pragmatic discourse of givenness where the p-value is reported at 0.79. It seems that Thai EFL Mattayom learners have not yet acquired the pragmatic discourse of given and new information in producing A-movement constructions in English. The discussion is given in the scope of a lack of experience of writing passive voice with other discourses. In addition, the traditional styles of teaching active and passive voice as interchangeable structures in Thai schools do not support the actual use of A-movement constructions in practicality. It is recommended that pragmatic discourse of givenness via A-movement constructions should be built into the curriculum for Thai EFL learners to develop cohesion in writing academic texts.

Abstract

This research sought to address three key questions: how EFL instructors in higher education integrated critical thinking (CT) skills into their teaching practices, what challenges they encountered during the integration process, and how EFL students perceived and experienced the impact of this integration. Five instructors from four universities and 49 students participated in this research, with the following methods being employed: interviews with the instructors and open-response questionnaires and focus group discussions with students. A qualitative research approach was adopted using a descriptive design to explore the integration of CT within EFL instruction. The instructors were selected purposively based on their experience teaching EFL courses at the tertiary level and their willingness to participate. Students were chosen through convenience sampling from two intact classes in the third and fifth semesters. The data collection instruments included semi-structured interviews for instructors, open-ended written questionnaires for students, and one focus group discussion. Instrument validation involved expert judgment and pilot testing with non-participant instructors and students. Thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke’s (2006) six-phase framework was applied, with inter-coder reliability established at 87% to ensure analytical consistency. The findings indicated that EFL instructors could integrate CT in almost all EFL courses (reading, listening, speaking, writing, grammar, and vocabulary), with the CT themes emerging being analyzing, evaluating, giving arguments, guessing, inferring, reasoning, and summarizing. The study contributes to EFL pedagogy by documenting practical instructional strategies for CT integration and offering a context-sensitive framework for developing CT across language skill areas. It also offers theoretical insights into how sociocultural and constructivist principles manifest in EFL classrooms. These findings can inform curriculum reform, teacher training, and future research in CT-oriented language education.

Abstract

Technology acceptance is rooted at the center of the growing body of research in lieu of education, educational technology, and teacher education. This is mainly occupied with the idea of integrating technology into the classroom setting in order to trigger learners to be advanced in higher-order thinking skills and be digitally literate in order to cope with the challenges of the information era. In doing so, teachers, as the gatekeepers of technology in the classroom, are renowned to be vital sources to deliver information. Thus, it is of critical importance to detect whether teachers are accepting technology with ease and as useful, which can be explained through the technology acceptance model (TAM). That said, this study adopts a diachronic view into an understanding of the role of TAM in teacher education. Accordingly, the aim of this article is to provide an overview of the lay of the land for the development of TAM together with the theories and variables beneath it by means of a review of existing literature. Conceptualizing where to go by means of a top-down approach from global (worldwide) to local (the Turkish context), this article scrutinizes the following results: (1) since new-age learners are expected to develop 21st-century skills, it is today’s necessity for future teachers to develop their knowledge and skills in technology; (2) this, in turn, holds the requirement for new teacher education programs to renew the already existing curriculum by providing multimodal learning and teaching environments; (3) herein, understanding how teachers perceive ease of use and usefulness of technology in order to employ it in the classroom environment is of critical importance to trigger teachers’ technology adoption through TAM as a credible model; however, TAM somehow falls short of unveiling what it means to adopt and integrate technology in classroom settings, though.

Abstract

Language is a communication tool for every human being and is used  to convey ideas, messages, intentions, feelings, opinions to others or even to meet daily needs. Intercultural communication is a communication that frequently occurs in the community. Pragmatics is a branch of linguistics that discusses aspects of language as a communication tool. When combined with culture, intercultural communication that occurs in society can be understood. In order for a speaker's language to be accepted in a society, he needs to fully understand the rules that apply in that society, including an understanding of the appropriate  use of certain language functions or speech acts. There is a close relationship between pragmatics and the concept of politeness. Politeness is fundamental in pragmatics because this is a universal phenomenon in the use of language in social contexts. The focus of this research is to identify the politeness strategies used by the two main characters in the Shanghai Knights film, Chon Wang and Roy O'Bannon, and analyze them in terms of the cultural background of the two main characters. This is a qualitative descriptive study. The results show that the politeness strategy used is strongly influenced by their cultural background. The strategy used most often is the bald-on record strategy while the Off-record politenses strategy is the strategy that is the least used by the two main characters of the film. This suggests that an understanding of politeness strategies is needed to realize face-threatening actions (FTA). In other words, politeness strategies are used to maintain continuity and success in communicating.
