Abstract

Self-medication has been practiced globally for thousands of years. As a part of primary healthcare services, self-medication forms the cornerstone of a sustainable healthcare system supporting universal health coverage, which is targeted in Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3), target 3.8. This study aims to provide an overview of self-medication behaviors and the factors influencing them among residents of Central Java Province. Using data from the 2021 National Socio-Economic Survey provided by the BPS-Statistics Indonesia, the sample size of this study includes 19,998 individuals, with 82.1% engaging in self-medication. The prevalence of self-medication is higher among males (84.0%) compared to females (80.6%). Self-medication is more common among individuals who are employed, live in rural areas, are unmarried, do not have health insurance, use the internet, are not poor, or have health complaints that do not interfere with daily activities, compared to their corresponding counterparts. The proportion of self-medication decreases with increasing age or higher education levels. Further binary logistic regression analysis identifies that the propensity for self-medication is higher among males (OR=1.16; 95% CI: 1.07-1.26), employed individuals (OR=1.40; 95% CI: 1.30-1.52), unmarried individuals (OR=1.17; 95% CI: 1.07-1.28), those without health insurance (OR=1.32; 95% CI: 1.20-1.44), the poor (OR=1.16; 95% CI: 1.02-1.31), those with health complaints that do not disrupt daily activities (OR=1.54; 95% CI: 1.43-1.66). The government needs to provide education and information regarding safe and responsible self-medication practices to at-risk groups, such as those with lower education levels, those without health insurance, and the poor, to maximize the benefits of self-medication and minimize the negative impacts of self-medication behaviors.

Abstract

Law No. 4 Year 2024 on Maternal and Child Welfare in the First Thousand Days of Life has been promulgated by the government of the Republic of Indonesia. The regulation guarantees the implementation and fulfilment of the needs of mothers and children in order to improve the quality of human resources. This article aims to map the duty-bearers-rights holders in the draft law on maternal and child welfare in the first thousand days of life. Analysing the position of maternal mothers is the main focus of this research, as maternal mothers are the main subjects in the draft law on maternal and child welfare in the first thousand days of life. Articles were analysed by context review from secondary data sources of Law No. 4 of 2024 on Maternal and Child Welfare in the First Thousand Days of Life and publication documents with the keywords ‘duty bearers’, ‘rights holders’, ‘maternal welfare’ and ‘maternal and child health’. The results show that most maternal mothers have a dual status as rights holders as well as duty bearers in their duties and responsibilities as pregnant women and newborns in Law No. 4 of 2024 on Maternal and Child Welfare in the First Thousand Days of Life.

Abstract

The weakening purchasing power of the middle class in Jakarta due to income stagnation and rising prices has encouraged the search for additional sources of income. The gig economy, which offers flexibility and higher income opportunities, is a potential alternative. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of middle-class workers and gig workers and measure the potential of the gig economy in increasing income. Analysis of the 2023 National Labor Force Survey (Sakernas) shows that 82.42% of Jakarta workers are middle class, the majority of whom have a high school education with an average income of 4.8 million rupiah per month. Meanwhile, gig workers with shorter working hours (44 hours/week) have an average income of 7 million rupiah. The results of the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) show the difference in income between gig and non-gig workers is 293,432 rupiah, increasing to 1,559,339 rupiah without the transportation sector. Logistic regression confirms that education, experience, and working hours have a significant effect on the opportunity to work in the gig economy. This finding emphasizes the importance of gig economy to potentially be the additional source of income for the middle-class workers, especially through skilled gig jobs. Therefore, the government needs to provide experience-based training (experiential learning) and promote the gig economy as a strategy to improve the welfare of middle-class in Jakarta.

Abstract

Women’s happiness can be influenced by various factors, including marital status. This study analyzes the relationship between marital status and women's happiness in Indonesia using pooled crossectional data from the Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) wave 4 & 5 in 2007 and 2014. The probit regression method is applied to estimate the impact of marital status on the probability of happiness. Results show that widowed and/or divorced women have significantly lower probabilities of happiness than married women (p-value < 0.01). In addition, the probability of being happy for women who are divorced is higher than those who are widowed (p-value < 0.1). This study also emphasizes that education has an important role in improving women's happiness. The implications of this study suggest the importance of policy interventions to improve access to education for women, particularly for those who are socially and economically vulnerable.

Abstract

This bibliometric analysis explores global trends, author productivity, institutional and country contributions, citation patterns, and thematic relationships in the literature linking smoking and mental health. Data from the Scopus database were retrieved using specific keyword combinations related to smoking and mental health, resulting in 1,782 eligible articles after filtering for research quality. The study examines publication trends, identifies high-impact studies, and maps thematic clusters in the field. Results indicate a notable increase in publications after 2000, driven by growing recognition of smoking's impact on mental well-being and the integration of mental health considerations in tobacco control policies. Thematic mapping reveals key areas of focus, including smoking cessation interventions, the neuropsychological effects of nicotine, and socio-economic factors influencing smoking behavior. Despite significant progress, critical gaps remain, particularly in research from low- and middle-income countries, minority populations, and the long-term effectiveness of interventions. This study calls for a more inclusive approach to future research to develop culturally sensitive and accessible interventions, ultimately improving global health outcomes.

Abstract

Poverty is a dynamic, diverse, and multidimensional concept. Its definition has evolved over time, moving from a monetary focus to a multidimensional perspective. Although poverty reduction has long been a critical issue, few studies have examined the role of the internet in addressing multidimensional poverty. To bridge this gap in the literature, this study explores the impact of internet access on multidimensional poverty in Indonesia, using data from the 2023 Susenas survey. Based on Propensity Score Matching results, evidence shows that internet access negatively affects multidimensional poverty. This research underscores the importance of internet access, highlighting the need for policies to address the digital divide.
