Abstract

Waste Bank Social Enterprises (WBSEs) are crucial for addressing urban waste challenges in Indonesia but struggle with scalability and financial sustainability. Many fail to move beyond micro-scale operations, limiting their social impact. This study identifies the business model characteristics that enable WBSEs to sustainably scale. It analyzes the evolutionary process of their business models over time. A 36-month longitudinal, mixed-methods study was conducted on twelve urban Indonesian WBSEs. We combined quantitative performance metrics with 72 semi-structured interviews to analyze their scaling trajectories. Findings reveal a stark divergence. Most WBSEs stagnated, trapped by a precarious aggregation-only model. The Rapidly Scaling enterprises were universally differentiated by a strategic pivot: adopting value-adding processing. This transformation allowed them to exit the low-value commodity trap and secure stable, high-value industrial contracts. Sustainable scaling is contingent upon a fundamental business model transformation from a passive collector to an active producer. This evolution from a community project to a market-integrated social enterprise is essential for financial resilience and amplifying social impact.

Abstract

Community-based sustainable tourism is a strategic approach to destination development that maintains a balance between ecological, socio-cultural, and economic aspects. This study aims to analyze the potential of Tuwed Village in Jembrana Regency, Bali, as a sustainable conservation educational tourism destination. The study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive-exploratory design, using data collection techniques such as field observations, in-depth interviews with village officials, community leaders, and local tourism stakeholders, as well as documentation studies. Data analysis was carried out through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that Tuwed Village has significant natural resource potential, including mangrove ecosystems, coastal areas, and organic farming practices that can be developed as a means of environmental education. The socio-cultural aspects of the community, particularly the values ??of local wisdom and traditions of nature conservation, are important assets in the development of community-based educational tourism. From an economic perspective, conservation educational tourism has the potential to create business opportunities and improve community welfare through local economic diversification. Meanwhile, from an institutional perspective, the commitment of the village government and community readiness indicate positive opportunities for strengthening the tourism management structure. This study concludes that Tuwed Village has great potential to be developed as a sustainable conservation educational tourism destination, provided that institutional strengthening, community capacity building, and multi-stakeholder support are provided.

Abstract

The rise of digital-preneurship has revolutionized the entrepreneurial landscape, especially for women who face traditional barriers in business. Social media platforms, such as Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, have emerged as key enablers for female entrepreneurs, offering low-cost solutions for brand development, customer engagement, and business growth. This study explores the role of social media in empowering female-led start-ups, with a focus on how these platforms provide opportunities to overcome gendered entrepreneurial challenges. The primary aim is to examine the strategies used by women entrepreneurs to leverage social media for business success. A qualitative case study design was employed, involving semi-structured interviews with 15 female entrepreneurs who use social media platforms as their primary business tool. Data were analyzed through thematic analysis, focusing on platform usage, content strategies, and entrepreneurial outcomes. The findings reveal that Instagram and TikTok are the most widely used platforms, with women entrepreneurs achieving higher engagement, brand visibility, and business growth through strategic use. Social media was found to significantly enhance business sustainability, customer loyalty, and market reach. This study concludes that social media platforms serve as vital empowerment tools for female entrepreneurs, enabling them to navigate traditional barriers and achieve scalable success. Future research should explore the long-term sustainability of these businesses and the specific challenges faced by women in digital entrepreneurship.

Abstract

Rural communities often face economic challenges such as unemployment and limited income sources, making sustainable development a complex issue. Socio-preneurship, which combines social entrepreneurship with sustainable business practices, has emerged as a powerful model to address these challenges. Rural ecotourism initiatives, as a form of socio-preneurship, have gained attention for their potential to stimulate local economies, preserve natural resources, and promote social well-being. This study examines the community-level economic impact of rural ecotourism, focusing on how these initiatives contribute to income generation, job creation, and local business growth. Using a mixed-methods approach, this research combines quantitative surveys and qualitative case studies to assess the economic effects of rural ecotourism in three rural communities. The study measured indicators such as household income, business revenue, and job creation. The results show that 72% of households reported income increases, 65% of local businesses experienced revenue growth, and 48% of respondents identified job creation in the ecotourism sector. The findings indicate that rural ecotourism can drive sustainable economic development by diversifying local economies and creating long-term job opportunities. These initiatives also foster socio-economic resilience in rural areas. The study highlights the importance of community engagement in ensuring the success of ecotourism projects and suggests that socio-preneurship can be a viable strategy for rural development.

Abstract

Tourism villages (desa wisata) in Bali have long been integral to the island’s economy, providing local communities with income through tourism activities. However, the COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted the tourism industry, prompting a need for innovative solutions to support economic recovery. Virtual tourism has emerged as a promising tool, allowing tourism villages to maintain cultural engagement and reach global audiences despite travel restrictions. This research explores the potential of virtual tourism as a social entrepreneurship model for the economic recovery of desa wisata in Bali. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study examines the effectiveness of virtual tourism initiatives in generating revenue, enhancing market reach, and empowering local communities. The research found that villages with higher levels of digital engagement saw significant increases in online visitors and revenue, with virtual tours and live-streamed events being particularly successful. However, challenges such as digital infrastructure limitations and generational divides in digital literacy were also identified. The study concludes that virtual tourism can serve as a viable and sustainable model for supporting the economic recovery of desa wisata, but requires continuous innovation, training, and community involvement to ensure long-term success.
