Abstract

Background. Phonological variation is a crucial aspect of sociolinguistics, reflecting social hierarchies, identities, and group affiliations within speech communities. Urban areas, characterized by diverse populations and socio-economic stratification, provide an ideal context for studying how phonological features correlate with social class, ethnicity, and other social variables. Understanding the relationship between phonological variation and social stratification offers valuable insights into the complex dynamics of language use in multicultural and urban settings. Purpose. This study aims to explore how phonological variation manifests in urban speech communities and its connection to social stratification. By examining specific phonological features and their distribution across different social groups, the research seeks to uncover patterns of linguistic differentiation and their relationship to social factors such as class, education, and ethnicity. Method. A mixed-methods approach is employed, combining quantitative acoustic analysis of speech samples with qualitative interviews from a range of socio-economic groups in an urban area. Data was collected from spontaneous conversations, interviews, and public speeches to ensure a broad representation of speech patterns. Results. The study reveals significant phonological variation across social strata, with certain phonetic features strongly correlating with higher social status and education levels. Variations in vowel and consonant pronunciation were notably influenced by social class and ethnic background. Conclusion. This research highlights the role of phonological variation in signaling social identity and reinforces the connection between language and social stratification in urban settings.

Abstract

Background. Contemporary literature increasingly functions as a social medium through which multicultural communities negotiate identity, belonging, and coexistence. In plural societies shaped by migration, cultural hybridity, and social inequality, literary themes extend beyond aesthetic concerns to engage with lived social realities and communal interactions. Purpose. This study aims to examine how contemporary literary themes influence social awareness, intercultural understanding, and community dynamics within multicultural contexts. Method. The study employs a qualitative interpretative approach using textual analysis and sociocultural criticism. Selected contemporary literary works representing diverse cultural backgrounds are analyzed to identify dominant themes and their social implications within multicultural communities. Results. This study concludes that contemporary literature contributes meaningfully to social cohesion and intercultural engagement by translating textual narratives into broader social contexts. Literary works not only reflect multicultural realities but actively participate in shaping inclusive social imaginaries and communal understanding. Conclusion. This study has significant implications for instructional practices in TFL settings and for L2 lecturers in the classroom. By understanding learners’ preferences for OCF, educators can tailor their instructional approaches to meet the specific needs of their students.

Abstract

Background. Language plays a fundamental role in shaping and reflecting identity, particularly in multicultural societies where diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds intersect. The relationship between language, identity, and ideology is complex, as discourse both constructs and reflects social realities, power dynamics, and cultural values. Understanding how language operates in such contexts is crucial for exploring how ideologies are communicated and contested. Purpose. This study aims to examine the interplay between language, identity, and ideology in multicultural societies through a sociolinguistic analysis of discourse. It seeks to understand how language is used to construct social identities, negotiate cultural differences, and reinforce or challenge dominant ideologies within diverse communities. Method. A qualitative sociolinguistic approach is employed, using discourse analysis to examine a range of spoken and written texts from multicultural settings. Data sources include media, political speeches, and everyday conversations. The analysis focuses on how linguistic choices reflect identity construction and ideological positioning. Results. The findings reveal that language is a powerful tool for constructing social identities, with speakers strategically using linguistic features to align themselves with particular cultural or political groups. Ideological discourses are often reinforced through language, but also provide spaces for resistance and the negotiation of power relations. Conclusion. This study demonstrates the significant role of language in shaping identity and ideology in multicultural societies, highlighting the need for continued research into how language practices contribute to social dynamics and political discourse.

Abstract

Background. In contemporary societies, cultural traditions face constant pressure from globalization, modernization, and social change. These forces often lead to the adaptation and transformation of cultural practices, creating a dynamic tension between tradition and progress. Understanding how communities navigate these transitions is critical for understanding the mechanisms of cultural preservation and transformation. Purpose. This study aims to examine the processes of cultural adaptation and social change in contemporary communities. By investigating how communities balance the preservation of traditions with the demands of modern life, the research seeks to shed light on the factors influencing cultural evolution and the impact of social change on traditional practices. Method. A qualitative research approach is employed, utilizing in-depth interviews and participant observation within several communities undergoing significant cultural transitions. Data is collected from various social groups, including older and younger generations, to explore differing perspectives on tradition and change. Results. The study finds that while traditional practices remain important, they are continually reinterpreted and adapted to align with modern values and lifestyles. Younger generations tend to prioritize aspects of tradition that align with global trends, while older generations emphasize the preservation of original practices. Conclusion. This research underscores the complexity of cultural adaptation and highlights the role of intergenerational dialogue in negotiating the tension between tradition and change.

Abstract

Background. Performance has long been an essential part of human society, from its roots in ritualistic practices to its evolution into modern theatrical and performance art forms. Throughout history, performance has served as a means to communicate, express cultural identity, and negotiate social and power dynamics. While traditional rituals held specific social and spiritual functions, contemporary performances often focus on entertainment, self-expression, and cultural critique. Understanding the social function of performance in both traditional and modern contexts is crucial to understanding how societies use performance to address collective values, identity, and power. Purpose. This study aims to explore the social functions of performance in traditional rituals and contemporary theatre, focusing on how these practices facilitate cultural expression, identity formation, and the negotiation of social roles. The research investigates the transformation of performance across historical contexts and its continued significance in modern societies. Method. This qualitative study employs a comparative analysis of selected traditional rituals and modern theatrical performances. Data collection includes field observations, textual analysis of performance scripts, and interviews with practitioners in both domains. Results. The research finds that both traditional rituals and contemporary theatre continue to play key roles in reinforcing and challenging social norms, identity, and power structures. However, the function of performance has evolved, with traditional rituals focusing on spiritual and social cohesion, while modern theatre emphasizes personal expression and critique. Conclusion. The study concludes that performance, whether ritualistic or artistic, remains a critical medium for cultural negotiation, serving both to preserve traditions and to engage with contemporary issues of identity, community, and power.
