Abstract

This study aims to critically analyze the contribution of literacy communities in strengthening inclusive public spaces in the city of Surakarta. Departing from the low national literacy rate and the limited access to reading facilities in open spaces, this research highlights how citizen-led communities independently initiate literacy practices outside formal institutions. Using a qualitative approach with a case study method, the study explores the activities of three active literacy communities, namely Bakaran, Solo Book Party, and Sobomaos, through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and activity documentation. The findings show that these communities have successfully reclaimed public spaces such as city parks, campus courtyards, angkringan stalls, and cafés into collective learning spaces that are non-hierarchical, inclusive, and reflective. Literacy in this context is no longer understood merely as a technical ability, but as a social, political, and spatial practice that strengthens learning culture, civic participation, and community empowerment. Despite facing structural challenges such as limited policy and infrastructural support, the communities demonstrate resilience and innovation. As an applied contribution, this research recommends the development of a “Taman Cerdas” as a public literacy ecosystem that integrates recreational, technological, and educational functions within an environmentally friendly open space accessible to all citizens. These findings show that community-driven literacy can serve as a model for urban development rooted in citizen participation and oriented toward spatial justice.

Abstract

The Library of the Faculty of Adab and Humanities (FAB) plays a strategic role as an information center and learning space for students, particularly those in the Islamic Library and Information Science Study Program (IPII). This study aims to analyze the influence of library service hours on the visitation interest of IPII students from the 2022–2023 cohort. The research employs a descriptive quantitative method, collecting data through Likert-scale questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with librarians. The results indicate that the majority of students consider the current library service hours adequate and convenient for their visits; however, challenges arise regarding the consistency of service hours due to the limited number of librarian staff. Uncertainty in service hours affects three dimensions of the SERVQUAL theory: Reliability, Responsiveness, and Assurance, which directly impact students’ visitation interest. Students tend to visit the library more frequently when service hours are flexible, consistent, and reliable. This study emphasizes the importance of effectively managing library service hours, either by increasing staff or establishing backup schedules, to enhance visitor interest and user satisfaction. The findings are expected to serve as a basis for evaluating and improving FAB library services in the future.

Abstract

The digital transformation in the field of libraries during the Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the development of websites as the main medium for delivering public information and services quickly and without boundaries. Library websites, such as the Salatiga Virtual Library Tour developed by the Salatiga City Library and Archives Office in collaboration with CV. Heikel Media Cipta Solusi, serve as a significant platform for providing broad access to library information and digital resources. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the quality of the Salatiga Virtual Library Tour website in meeting users' information needs and to identify various challenges faced by the Salatiga City Library and Archives Office in its development. This research applies a qualitative method with a descriptive approach through observation, interviews, and documentation techniques. Based on Shedroff's theoretical framework, the findings reveal that the Salatiga Virtual Library Tour website successfully presents informative, accessible, and responsive content. However, regular content updates, better data management, improved visual design, and the development of interactive and accessibility features are still needed to make the website more inclusive, engaging, and beneficial for all community segments. The search system functions well but is not yet integrated with the OPAC or collections beyond the local content. Access limitations are often related to third-party issues and rental system constraints. Major challenges include cyber-attacks, server disruptions, and limited human resources in website management. This study highlights that adequate technological and human resource support is crucial to maintain service quality and data security, enabling the website to provide optimal and inclusive information access for its users.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Digital library research has experienced exponential growth since 2010, yet no comprehensive bibliometric study has systematically mapped its global intellectual structure. Objective: This study aims to analyze 14,876 publications indexed in Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus from 2010 to 2025, employing advanced bibliometric methodologies to identify leading contributors, key research themes, intellectual clusters, and future trajectories. Methods: We employed performance analysis and science mapping techniques including co-citation analysis, keyword co-occurrence analysis, bibliographic coupling, and co-authorship network analysis. Software tools including VOSviewer, Bibliometrix (R-package), and CiteSpace were utilized for visualization. Results: The United States (n = 4,231), China (n = 3,876), and the United Kingdom (n = 2,145) emerged as the most productive nations. The Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology (JASIST) led in citations. Six major thematic clusters were identified: (1) Information Retrieval & Search Systems, (2) User Experience & Usability, (3) Digital Preservation & Metadata, (4) Open Access & Scholarly Communication, (5) Semantic Web & Linked Data, and (6) Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning applications. Conclusion: The field is shifting from traditional cataloging and retrieval paradigms toward AI-driven, user-centric, and interoperable architectures. Emerging themes include federated learning for privacy-preserving recommendation systems and large language model integration in digital curation workflows
