Abstract

Abstract

Religion is two blades which one side can be a tool to legitimize stabbing humans, but on the other hand can be a source of hope. Religion in the Afghanistan conflict is not only a justification for jihadist acts, but also a hidden cause of conflict between religious communities there which gave birth to ethnic and religious group disintegration. This is compounded by the absence of structural institutions that accommodate national unity. The difficulty of reconciliation carried out by state actors and international organizations in the resolution of the Afghanistan conflict has led to the use of second-track diplomacy to help resolve this never-ending revolution. The appointment of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) which is a religious-based civil society organization as a mediator by Indonesia in supporting reconciliation efforts is the turning point of the conflict transformation effort in Afghanistan. NU has a vision to create positive peace that aims to mitigate religious teachings in contributing to the conflict and eliminate the justification of religion as a tool to perpetuate civil conflict. In the context of public diplomacy, NU uses a model of religious diplomacy that can be defined as "the use of religion to communicate with the global public as a way to overcome the Afghan conflict”. This paper seeks to explain how NU uses religious diplomacy in conflict transformation efforts in Afghanistan.

Abstract

Before 9/11 attack, U.S. and Indonesia military relation was under the shade of confrontation rather than cooperation since the imposing of U.S. embargo on military training and weaponry transfer after Santa Cruz tragedy in 1991. However, throughout 2003 and 2004, when Indonesia was still in the embargo, U.S. government reportedly supported the establishment of an elite force in Indonesia named Special Detachment 88 Anti-Terror which also known as Densus 88. 9/11 attack and many terrorism activities throughout the world in its aftermath were situating U.S. government under crisis situation. Based on existed evidences, the author concludes that under crisis situation, U.S. government is highly possible violating its own foreign policy line as indicated with its support to Densus 88 in Indonesia.

Abstract

Eventhough there are overlapping and intersection in defining the concept of Human Rights, Islam and Western have serious debates on it. The debates started from the different sources of human rights. Islam put the revelation as the foundation of its rule and Western mostly depend on the individual freedom. In term of its implementation, Western critizes Islam as the ideology as well as actor behind the violation of human rights. In its point of views, Islam distinguishes the rights of the people based on the concepts of Islamic state, gender inequality, and various kinds of inhumane shariah law. On the other hand, Islam argues that Islam has more complete and advance concept of human rights than the Western since Western does not concern on the social rights of people. Even if the concept is analyzed based on the Islamic values and history, it would be clear that Islam promote human rights seriously. For some of controversial issues in Islamic shariah such as qishos, amputation and inheritance, Islam assures that they have many benefits for the common rights of the people.

However, this step is not fully run smoothly because the negotiation was challenged by the US strategic ally, Saudi Arabia and Israel, both criticized the policy of the White House as an error. Behind security considerations, economic factor also played significant role in sealing the deal. What are the main reasons and dynamics behind the deal? This paper intends to review these dynamics by elaborating prominent reports and research findings.
