Abstract

Basic education plays a crucial role in building the foundation of students' knowledge and skills, particularly in understanding informational texts. This ability is essential for comprehending everyday reading materials and preparing students for higher-level learning. However, understanding informational texts often poses a challenge for grade 5 students in Indonesia. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the 5W 1H strategy in improving the understanding of informational texts for grade 5 students at SDN Wonokusumo V/44. This research employed a quasi-experimental design with a single group pre-test and post-test approach, involving 32 students selected through purposive sampling. The research instruments included text comprehension tests, observation sheets, and student questionnaires. The results revealed a significant improvement in understanding informational texts after implementing the 5W 1H strategy, with an average pre-test score of 57.17 and a post-test score of 81.17. Statistical analysis showed a t-value of -36.80 with a p-value of 6.80e-26, confirming a statistically significant difference. Observations and student questionnaires indicated an increase in student engagement and activity in the learning process. Students reported that the 5W 1H strategy helped them understand informational texts more easily and made the learning process more engaging. This strategy also assisted students in remembering important information from the texts they read. The study highlights the importance of the 5W 1H strategy as an effective learning tool for improving the comprehension of informational texts among elementary school students. By adopting this strategy, teachers can help students develop the critical and analytical thinking skills needed to understand various information in both everyday life and academic contexts. Furthermore, this research makes a practical contribution by developing a model for implementing the 5W 1H strategy that can be applied by other teachers in similar contexts. It also explores the potential for integrating technology in applying this strategy, which can further enrich students' learning experiences.

Abstract

This study delves into strategies to enhance the reading interest of 6th-grade students through the utilization of a reading corner at SDN Wonokusumo V/44, Surabaya, East Java. The reading corner is designed to create a stimulating learning environment outside formal class hours, providing a space for students to engage in more relaxed and interactive reading activities. The research employed various methods, including observation, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation analysis over one semester, offering a comprehensive view of the impact of the reading corner on students' reading interest. The findings reveal that the reading corner effectively boosts the reading interest of 6th-grade students. Observations highlighted active student engagement as they used the reading corner to read and discuss books, creating a more dynamic and collaborative reading experience. The questionnaire results also indicated a significant increase in the frequency of visits to the reading corner and the number of books borrowed after the program's implementation, reflecting a positive change in students' reading behavior. Teachers play a crucial role as facilitators in the success of this program. They not only guide students in selecting books that match their interests and reading levels but also integrate reading corner activities into their teaching to comprehensively develop reading skills. This approach not only enhances teacher-student interactions but also builds higher motivation among students to engage in reading activities. Full support from the school, including the principal, significantly contributes to the program's success. Both the principal and teachers are committed to creating a supportive learning environment that allows students to experience the broader benefits of reading. This research underscores the importance of a supportive learning environment in enhancing elementary students' reading habits. The implementation of the reading corner demonstrates that by providing an appealing and relevant facility, along with support from teachers and the school, students' reading interest can be significantly enhanced. Furthermore, the program encourages the overall development of students' literacy skills, including critical thinking, analytical abilities, and communication skills. These findings lay the groundwork for further development of literacy strategies in schools, particularly in leveraging informal learning spaces like reading corners to cultivate a sustainable reading culture. Future recommendations include expanding the book collection to be more diverse and relevant to students' interests and enhancing teacher training to maximize the impact of the reading corner. With these steps, the reading corner is expected to become an integral part of a broader learning strategy that not only boosts reading interest but also supports students' academic and personal development comprehensively. This study provides valuable insights for other schools to adopt and adapt similar strategies in their efforts to enhance literacy and reading interest among their students

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an interactive and engaging teaching approach for the 50-meter sprint technique among Grade V students at SDN Perak Barat VI Surabaya for the 2018/2019 academic year. Implemented as a Classroom Action Research (CAR), this study was conducted in two cycles, each involving planning, action, observation, and reflection phases. The initial observations showed that many students lacked understanding and skill in executing the 50-meter sprint technique. This led to the development and application of a revised teaching strategy in Cycle 2, incorporating feedback from observers and peers to enhance learning outcomes. The results of Cycle 2 indicated a significant improvement in students' knowledge, skills, and attitudes towards the sprint technique. All 32 students, or 100%, demonstrated mastery in performing the 50-meter sprint correctly, achieving full competence. Additionally, observations by peers and observers noted that the learning process was highly engaging, with students displaying enthusiasm, active participation, and positive attitudes, such as sportsmanship, discipline, confidence, and motivation. These results represent a substantial improvement from Cycle 1, demonstrating the success of the revised teaching approach. This study concludes that an interactive and student-centered learning method significantly enhances cognitive, psychomotor, and affective aspects of students' learning outcomes. It emphasizes the importance of adaptive teaching methods tailored to students' needs to achieve optimal learning results. The findings of this study are expected to serve as a reference for educators in developing more dynamic and effective teaching strategies to improve the overall quality of education, particularly in Physical Education, Sports, and Health

Abstract

Waste management is a critical issue in maintaining environmental sustainability, especially in school settings where the character of the younger generation is shaped. This study aims to explore the implementation of inorganic and organic waste management methods through a Waste Bank program and compost production at UPT SD Negeri 75 Gresik. This program has been running for approximately two years and has shown positive impacts by creating a cleaner and healthier school environment, saving costs through the use of organic waste as compost, and opening entrepreneurial opportunities for students through the sale of recycled products. The results indicate that the success of this program is supported by several factors, including a green school environment, strong support from the school community and stakeholders, and waste management skills possessed by most of the school community. However, the program also faces several challenges, such as limited facilities and infrastructure, lack of meticulousness in waste processing, and limited time and funding for entrepreneurship support. To overcome these challenges, collaboration between the school, committee, and surrounding community is needed, as well as enhanced skills training and entrepreneurship development among teachers and students. With sustained efforts and support from various parties, UPT SD Negeri 75 Gresik can serve as a model for effective and sustainable waste management in school environments. This study is expected to contribute to the development of better waste management strategies and serve as a reference for other schools in implementing similar programs.
