Landscapes are visible and integrative social-ecological systems with variable spatial and temporal dimensions. They have expressive aesthetic, natural, and cultural qualities that are perceived and valued by people in multiple ways and invite actions resulting in landscape change. Landscapes are increasingly urban in nature and ecologically and culturally sensitive to changes at local through global scales. Multiple disciplines and perspectives are required to understand landscapes and align social and ecological values to ensure the sustainability of landscapes. The journal is based on the premise that landscape science linked to planning and design can provide mutually supportive outcomes for people and nature. Landscape science brings landscape ecology and urban ecology together with other disciplines and cross-disciplinary fields to identify patterns and understand social-ecological processes influencing landscape change. Landscape planning brings landscape architecture, urban and regional planning, landscape and ecological engineering, and other practice-oriented fields to bear in processes for identifying problems and analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating desirable alternatives for landscape change. Landscape design brings plans, designs, management prescriptions, policies and other activities and form-giving products to bear in effecting landscape change. The implementation of landscape planning and design also generates new patterns of evidence and hypotheses for further research, providing an integral link with landscape science and encouraging transdisciplinary collaborations to build robust knowledge and problem solving capacity.

Abstract

Green Open Spaces (GOS) play an important role as multifunctional areas that support community recreational activities by providing public facilities. However, a mismatch between activity patterns and existing facilities can hinder their optimal use. This study was conducted at Ruang Limpah Sungai (RLS), Waduk Brigif, South Jakarta, to analyze the alignment between visitor activity patterns and available facilities. A quantitative descriptive method using an Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) approach was applied, drawing on field observations, questionnaires, and literature review. The findings show that the jogging track and amphitheater are priority facilities requiring improvement and evaluation. The jogging track needs enhancement in responsiveness, security, and communication, while the amphitheater requires improvements in tangible, user understanding, and accessibility. Recommendations are presented as spatial concepts focusing on pavement materials, seating, inclusive facilities for people with disabilities, and sanitation. This study concludes that implementing responsive, inclusive, and user-oriented landscape design is essential to optimize the function of GOS as spaces for recreation, sports, and social interaction.

Abstract

This study addresses the lack of spatial planning and the suboptimal utilization of ecological, socio-cultural, and economic potentials in Lahan Carik, Cibodas Village, Bandung Regency. Although the area is a fertile highland region with distinctive agricultural traditions and community-based livestock systems, its development is hindered by limited infrastructure and tourism facilities. The objective of this study is to design an ecotourism concept that integrates environmental conservation, education, and recreation, while also empowering the local community through participatory planning. This research employs a qualitative method, with data collected through field observations, interviews, and literature review. The data is analyzed descriptively, focusing on environmental, socio-cultural, economic, and accessibility aspects. The findings indicate that the area possesses high biodiversity, traditional farming practices, strong cultural values, and scenic landscapes. However, it lacks organized spatial zoning, interpretive facilities, and sustainable infrastructure. The proposed concept includes functional zoning (conservation, production, recreation, water conservation, and buffer zones), educational trails, environmentally friendly circulation systems, and active community involvement in the management of agrotourism programs. Recommended facilities include a botanical garden, livestock waste processing area, composting unit, and a traditional farming demonstration zone, aimed at enhancing both ecological value and visitor experience. The discussion emphasizes the importance of aligning spatial design with the site’s ecological characteristics and local socio-economic context. In conclusion, the proposed design concept serves as a sustainable and participatory ecotourism framework that can revitalize Lahan Carik as an educational, ecological, and cultural destination, while providing benefits for both the environment and the local community.

Abstract

After the 7.4-magnitude earthquake, tsunami, and liquefaction disaster in September 2018, the Balaroa sub-district of Palu City was severely affected by liquefaction, which covered approximately 50 hectares with a perimeter of about 2.5 kilometres. This area was predominantly residential. Historically, residents of West Gunung Marawola avoided passing through this area when travelling to the Manonda Inpres Market, as the wheels of their carts would often become stuck. Consequently, the site was named Tagari Lonjo (a waterlogged and muddy area). This served as a form of natural mitigation, indicating that the site was unsuitable for habitation. This paper aims to establish a correlation between the initial conditions and the management of potential risks following the disaster. The research employs qualitative methods and utilises the Sendai Framework (as a conceptual foundation) and SWOT analysis (as a strategy formulation tool). The proposed design concept involves planning and utilisation of the former Balaroa liquefaction site, focusing not only on physical and ecological recovery but also on socio-economic revitalisation and strengthening resilience to future disasters. Based on the analysis, the geotechnical conditions of the former liquefaction site in Balaroa Village are recommended to be utilised as Ruang Natebuka Kodara (green open space) within land-use planning, with agrotourism potential that can foster economic self-reliance and help alleviate communal trauma. It is hoped that this paper will contribute particularly to education on mitigation and resilience, supporting regional sustainability through innovative post-disaster recovery strategies.

Abstract

Jombang Regency is one of the strategic areas in East Java that still contributes to carbon emissions, making green open spaces (GOS) with tree vegetation essential for mitigating climate change. This study aimed to identify tree species diversity and estimate aboveground biomass, carbon stock, carbon dioxide absorption, and oxygen production in four GOS areas in the form of city parks in Jombang Regency, as well as to analyze the influence of tree characteristics such as height, trunk diameter, number of individuals, and wood density on their environmental contributions. The research was conducted in Mojoagung Park, Kebonratu Park, Kebonrojo Park, and Alun-alun Jombang using a direct survey method and non-destructive allometric estimation. The data collected included tree species identification, height and diameter measurements, and biomass and carbon calculations based on the condition of the tree. Results showed a total of 1.005 trees from 56 species, with a moderate diversity range 1,81 to 2,72 and a high evenness index range 0,71 to 0,83. Kebonratu Park had the highest contributions to carbon absorption and oxygen production, followed by Kebonrojo Park, Alun-alun Jombang, and Mojoagung Park. The vegetation structure and composition of each GOS influenced the variations in contributions. The study concluded that tree characteristics significantly affect carbon absorption and oxygen production potential, making them a vital basis for ecological and sustainable GOS management recommendations.

Abstract

Old urban trees are vital environmental and identity assets currently threatened by urbanization and infrastructure development. The lack of protection policies based on economic valuation poses a significant challenge to the conservation of these historic trees. This study aims to estimate the economic value of three types of old trees (Samanea saman, Ficus benjamina, and Canarium indicum) in Malang City using the Danish Valuation Method (VAT03). The assessment is based on four parameters: Basic Value (B), Health Factor (H), Location Factor (L), and Age Factor (A). Data were collected through field observations at Tugu Square, Merdeka Square, and Panglima Sudirman Street, complemented by literature data from the Bouwplan I area. The results indicate that the Kenari tree (C. indicum) possesses the highest average economic value at IDR 577,355,787.31. This high valuation is driven by its basic value, long life expectancy, and architectural historical significance. This study emphasizes the need to integrate economic tree valuation into urban spatial planning policies to strengthen the conservation of old urban trees.

Abstract

The revitalization of the Martha Christina Tiahahu Literacy Park (TLMCT) has significantly increased the number of visitors, bringing both positive and negative impacts. Although comprehensive facilities have been provided, this increase in quantity does not necessarily guarantee comfort. Several aspects are still less than optimal in meeting visitor needs, so a detailed analysis is needed to provide strategic recommendations regarding comfort levels. This study aims to identify the physical condition of the TLMCT post-revitalization and analyze visitor perceptions and preferences regarding park comfort. A descriptive mixed-methods approach was used, combining descriptive field observation with Likert-scale analysis for respondent data. The evaluation was based on eight comfort indicators: circulation, temperature, noise, aroma, shape, safety, cleanliness, and aesthetics. The findings indicate alignment between visitor perceptions and preferences; however, three factors—cleanliness, safety, and noise—remain suboptimal within this urban environment. Therefore, this study offers recommendations for facility adjustments and infrastructure additions to improve park management functionality and overall visitor satisfaction.

Abstract

This study aims to formulate a strategy for optimizing the outdoor learning area at SMA Kornita Bogor based on the Eco Learning Space concept in order to create a comfortable, functional, and environmentally friendly learning environment. This study employs qualitative methods through observation, interviews, and a literature review. The results indicate that the current outdoor learning areas lack sufficient shade-providing vegetation, adequate learning facilities, and spatial connectivity, thereby limiting their effectiveness as learning environments. The proposed design integrates the four main principles of the Eco Learning Space: energy and resource efficiency, eco-friendly materials and design, integration with nature, and sustainability education. Optimization is achieved through the addition of shade-providing vegetation, modular seating, integrated circulation, and educational features such as composters and environmental murals. The 3D visualization showcases an adaptive and sustainable outdoor learning area designed to enhance student comfort, support active learning, and strengthen ecological awareness. Ultimately, this outdoor learning area serves as a living laboratory that reflects SMA Kornita’s commitment to sustainable education and experiential learning.

Abstract

The Satui River in South Kalimantan, Indonesia, faces significant riparian landscape degradation due to settlements, erosion, and land-use changes, which have intensified flood and landslide risks. This study provides an exploratory assessment of the current ecological functions of the riparian landscape of the river and identifies potential strategies for flood risk mitigation. An exploratory, descriptive qualitative approach was employed, involving field surveys to evaluate the existing vegetation and a literature review of local management plans. Due to the current lack of detailed quantitative data, management strategies and vegetation effectiveness were evaluated using a qualitative rating scale of high (H), medium (M), and low (L) based on technical effectiveness, sustainability, and community adaptation criteria. Field observations revealed that the existing vegetation is dominated by fruit trees and shallow-rooted plants, such as Mangifera indica and Musa paradisiaca, which offer limited riverbank stabilization and habitat support. Qualitative analysis suggests that integrated strategies—combining watershed-scale conservation, riparian corridor restoration, and selective structural measures— should be prioritized for sustainable risk reduction over isolated hard-engineering solutions. Specific recommendations include implementing nature-based solutions, such as vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides) for edge reinforcement, reforestation of the upper watershed, and adaptive management involving local communities. While these strategies show high potential in a qualitative framework, the study notes that empirical data on the effectiveness of nature-based solutions in humid tropical regions remain limited, highlighting the need for further quantitative research and pilot projects to validate these findings.
