Abstract

This study aims to examine a methodological framework based on content analysis for music research. Although content analysis has been widely applied across various scientific disciplines, its implementation within music studies remains sporadic, unsystematic, and lacks an operational framework that can be widely adopted. Accordingly, this research formulates a central inquiry: can content analysis be positioned as a foundational methodology in music research, and how can its methodological structure be scientifically constructed? The research employs a conceptual–qualitative approach using theoretical analysis and literature synthesis, drawing primarily on Krippendorff’s theoretical formulations on content analysis and Scopus-indexed empirical publications that apply this method within music-related contexts. The analytical processes were conducted through unitizing, sampling, coding, inferencing, and validation procedures, which were subsequently mapped onto music research settings. The findings indicate that content analysis possesses both epistemological flexibility and procedural structure, enabling its applicability in musicology, ethnomusicology, music education, music psychology, performance studies, as well as broader domains including the humanities and technology-based research. The novelty of this study lies in the formulation of a comprehensive methodological model that positions music as a representation of meaning rather than merely an acoustic phenomenon. In conclusion, content analysis warrants consideration as a primary methodological approach in music research, as it effectively bridges interpretive frameworks and data-driven approaches. Future research recommendations include the empirical testing of the proposed model across diverse genres and research contexts, as well as the exploration of its integration with computational methods such as AI based approaches and Music Information Retrieval.

Abstract

This study examines Pupuh Pucung as a culturally grounded medium for character education by analyzing its moral values through the educational philosophy of Ki Hadjar Dewantara. Using a qualitative descriptive approach with content analysis, this study analyzes selected Pupuh Pucung texts to identify character values and interpret their alignment with the principles of Ing Ngarsa Sung Tuladha, Ing Madya Mangun Karsa, and Tut Wuri Handayani. The results show that Pupuh Pucung contains core character values, including perseverance, discipline, responsibility, self-reflection, togetherness, and social awareness, which are conveyed through simple, rhythmic, and easily memorized poetic structures. These values function not merely as moral advice but as experiential narratives that encourage internalization through reflection and social context. The analysis further reveals that Pupuh Pucung operationalizes Ki Hadjar Dewantara’s educational principles by presenting moral exemplars, fostering collective learning motivation, and encouraging learners’ autonomy. This study concludes that Pupuh Pucung is not only a traditional literary form but also a pedagogical text with strong relevance for character education based on local wisdom. The findings imply that integrating Pupuh Pucung into educational practices can strengthen moral awareness, cultural identity, and holistic character development in both formal and nonformal learning contexts. Future research is recommended to explore the empirical implementation of Pupuh Pucung–based learning models and their impact on students character development.

Abstract

This study investigates the richness of vocal ornamentation in the lagu gedé repertoire through a focused case study of Sundanese pesinden Nunung Nurmalasari’s performance of “Sungsang.” Within Sundanese vocal tradition, ornamentation constitutes a central expressive mechanism through which musical identity, stylistic continuity, and interpretative creativity are articulated. Employing a qualitative case study approach, the research analyzes audiovisual recordings sourced from the official Nunung Nurmalasari Official YouTube channel, supported by numeric transcription, document analysis, and interview data. Content analysis is applied to identify, categorize, and interpret ornamentation techniques in relation to melodic structure, laras, surupan, and formal design. The findings reveal eleven distinct vocal ornamentation techniques: eluk tungtung, geregel, ombak, galasar, golosor, leotan, besot, eur-eur, gedag, dorong, and beulit systematically integrated throughout the performance. These ornaments function not merely as melodic embellishments but as structural and expressive devices that shape phrasing, reinforce modal modulation, and preserve lyrical clarity amid dense melodic decoration. Several techniques emerge as stylistic hallmarks, reflecting Nurmalasari’s distinctive vocal identity and deep mastery of Sundanese singing practice. The study concludes that vocal ornamentation in “Sungsang” operates as a coherent expressive system embedded within lagu gedé aesthetics. Its findings contribute to musicological and ethnomusicological discourse on kepesindenan and offer pedagogical value for Sundanese vocal education. Future research is encouraged to extend comparative analysis across performers and repertoires to further elucidate stylistic diversity in Sundanese vocal traditions.

Abstract

Pupuh sebagai warisan sastra dan seni vokal Sunda menghadapi tantangan keberlanjutan akibat menurunnya minat generasi muda, sehingga diperlukan strategi pembelajaran yang relevan dalam pendidikan formal. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengkaji proses dan efektivitas pelatihan nembang Pupuh Dangdanggula berbasis metode demonstrasi dan teknik ngabeo pada siswa SMP Pasundan 1 Cimahi dalam persiapan Festival Tunas Bahasa Ibu (FTBI) 2025. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus melalui observasi partisipatif, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa integrasi demonstrasi, teknik ngabeo, dan notasi sederhana secara signifikan meningkatkan penguasaan melodi, ketepatan ornamentasi vokal (dongkari), ekspresi musikal, serta kepercayaan diri siswa, yang tercermin dalam capaian Juara Harapan I pada lomba FTBI. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa pembelajaran berbasis transmisi lisan yang dipadukan dengan strategi pedagogis terstruktur efektif untuk materi pupuh yang bersifat kompleks. Penelitian ini berkontribusi pada pengembangan model pelatihan pupuh yang kontekstual dan adaptif dengan menjembatani tradisi lisan Sunda dan pembelajaran seni di sekolah formal, sehingga memperkuat posisi pupuh sebagai praktik pedagogis yang berkelanjutan.

Abstract

Pendidikan musik berperan penting dalam mendukung perkembangan motorik halus dan konsentrasi anak usia sekolah dasar, salah satunya melalui pembelajaran biola yang menuntut koordinasi tangan kanan dan kiri secara presisi. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengkaji proses pembelajaran teknik dasar bowing dan fingering, kemampuan siswa dalam menerapkan kedua teknik tersebut, serta kendala dan faktor pendukung yang muncul dalam konteks pendidikan musik nonformal. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data berupa observasi, wawancara semi-terstruktur, dan dokumentasi terhadap pengajar dan peserta didik di Purwacaraka Musik Studio Mangga. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pembelajaran bowing dan fingering dilaksanakan secara bertahap melalui pengenalan instrumentasi, pembiasaan posisi tubuh dan bow, serta latihan teknik dasar yang terstruktur dengan mengacu pada Suzuki Violin Book Grade I. Temuan utama mengindikasikan bahwa kestabilan bowing dan ketepatan fingering merupakan tantangan utama bagi anak usia sekolah dasar, terutama pada aspek kontrol gesekan dan intonasi, namun dapat diatasi melalui strategi pedagogis yang menekankan latihan refleks, pengulangan bertahap, dan penyesuaian pembelajaran sesuai kemampuan individu siswa. Penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa pendekatan pedagogis yang sistematis dan adaptif dalam pembelajaran biola tidak hanya berkontribusi pada penguasaan teknik bermain, tetapi juga mendukung perkembangan motorik halus dan disiplin belajar anak, sehingga memperkaya kajian pedagogi musik anak dalam konteks pendidikan non-formal.
